Water shortage is a major worldwide issue. Filtration using genuine polymeric membranes demonstrates excellent pollutant separation capabilities; however, polymeric membranes have restricted uses. Nanocomposite membranes, which are produced by integrating nanofillers into polymeric membrane matrices, may increase filtration. Carbon-based nanoparticles and metal/metal oxide nanoparticles have received the greatest attention. We evaluate the antifouling and permeability performance of nanocomposite membranes and their physical and chemical characteristics and compare nanocomposite membranes to bare membranes. Because of the antibacterial characteristics of nanoparticles and the decreased roughness of the membrane, nanocomposite membranes often have greater antifouling properties. They also have better permeability because of the increased porosity and narrower pore size distribution caused by nanofillers. The concentration of nanofillers affects membrane performance, and the appropriate concentration is determined by both the nanoparticles’ characteristics and the membrane’s composition. Higher nanofiller concentrations than the recommended value result in deficient performance owing to nanoparticle aggregation. Despite substantial studies into nanocomposite membrane manufacturing, most past efforts have been restricted to the laboratory scale, and the long-term membrane durability after nanofiller leakage has not been thoroughly examined.

Prospects of Polymeric Nanocomposite Membranes for Water Purification and Scalability and their Health and Environmental Impacts: A Review

Self-healing elastomers that can repair physical damage and extend their service life in medium- and low-temperature environments have attracted considerable attention in the field of flexible materials. However, the self-healing polyurethane (PU) healing process reported in previous studies regularly needs to be supported by high heating temperature and long healing time. In this study, a simple method was developed to synthesize a self-healing PU film using isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) and a transparent rubber solution. The high transmittance (89%) of the resulting polyurethane–isophorone-diisocyanate (PUI) film was confirmed by UV–vis spectroscopy. FT-IR spectroscopy revealed that the hydrogen bonds formed by the imino group and the C═O bonds in IPDI and the transparent rubber facilitated the self-healing of the PUI composite film. The optical microscope observed that the self-healing PU can complete the self-healing of cracks in a short period. Moreover, a PUI film restored at 60 °C for 1 h withstood a load of 1 kg. Tensile tests showed that healing efficiencies of 82% and 99% were achieved by the PUI film healed at 60 °C for 1 and 2 h, respectively. A self-healing experiment conducted on a silver-nanowire/PUI-film system confirmed the synergistic recovery performance of PUI on a conductive coating. The self-healing PUI elastomers might have potential commercial prospects in transparent coatings, self-healing antibacterial films, robotic skins, and flexible electronics. 

A Transparent Self-Healing Polyurethane–Isophorone-Diisocyanate Elastomer Based on Hydrogen-Bonding Interactions

Decolorization of synthetic dyes by laccase produced from newly isolated Trametes hirsuta EDN084 under in-vitro condition was investigated in this study. Partial purification was conducted using ultrafiltration Amicon 10K at 5000 x g for 20 min. Laccase (0.1 U/mL) could decolorize 50% remazol brilliant blue R (RBBR), 47% reactive blue 4 (RBlue4), 51% acid blue 129 (AB129), 21% acid blue 25 (AB25), 40% acid blue 113 (AB113), 11% acid orange 7 (AO7), 2% reactive black 5 (RBlack5), 2% reactive red 120 (RR120), and 85% direct blue 71 (DBlue71) for 4 h. In order to improve the decolorization, the addition of violuric acid (VA), 2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethylpiperidine 1-oxyl (TEMPO), and 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HBT) were individually assayed. The result showed that decolorization was improved significantly (2 to 30-fold) after the addition of 1 mM VA. This study suggests that mediator VA is suitable for the enhanced decolorization of synthetic dyes by laccase from T. hirsuta EDN084.
