Holding a strong goal intention (“I intend to reach Z !”) does not guarantee goal achievement, because people may fail to deal effectively with self‐regulatory problems during goal striving. This review analyzes whether realization of goal intentions is facilitated by forming an implementation intention that spells out the when, where, and how of goal striving in advance (“If situation Y is encountered, then I will initiate goal‐directed behavior X !”). Findings from 94 independent tests showed that implementation intentions had a positive effect of medium‐to‐large magnitude ( d = .65) on goal attainment. Implementation intentions were effective in promoting the initiation of goal striving, the shielding of ongoing goal pursuit from unwanted influences, disengagement from failing courses of action, and conservation of capability for future goal striving. There was also strong support for postulated component processes: Implementation intention formation both enhanced the accessibility of specified opportunities and automated respective goal‐directed responses. Several directions for future research are outlined.

Implementation intentions and goal achievement: A meta-analysis of effects and processes

A meta-analysis (k of conditions = 128; N = 4,598) examined the influence of factors present at the time an attitude is formed on the degree to which this attitude guides future behavior. The findings indicated that attitudes correlated with a future behavior more strongly when they were easy to recall (accessible) and stable over time. Because of increased accessibility, attitudes more strongly predicted future behavior when participants had direct experience with the attitude object and reported their attitudes frequently. Because of the resulting attitude stability, the attitude-behavior association was strongest when attitudes were confident, when participants formed their attitude on the basis of behavior-relevant information, and when they received or were induced to think about one- rather than two-sided information about the attitude object.

Forming attitudes that predict future behavior: a meta-analysis of the attitude-behavior relation.

This article compiles results from a century of social psychological research, more than 25,000 studies of 8 million people. A large number of social psychological conclusions are listed alongside meta-analytic information about the magnitude and variability of the corresponding effects. References to 322 meta-analyses of social psychological phenomena are presented, as well as statistical effect-size summaries. Analyses reveal that social psychological effects typically yield a value of r equal to .21 and that, in the typical research literature, effects vary from study to study in ways that produce a standard deviation in r of .15. Uses, limitations, and implications of this large-scale compilation are noted. In 1898 Norman Triplett published an early experiment in social psychology, about an effect of the presence of others on task performance. In the 100 years since Triplett’s investigation, many social psychological effects have been documented. The current article summarizes the best established of these findings, with data from more than 25,000 research studies and 8 million people. Our goal is to quantify the magnitude and variability of social psychological effects. We begin by considering previous summaries of social psychology, note some unresolved issues, and review developments that permit a century of scholarly work to be quantitatively described. For present purposes, we follow Manstead and Hewstone (1995) in regarding social psychology as the study of “the reciprocal influence of the individual and his or her social context” (p. 588).

This article summarizes evidence and issues associated with psychological assessment. Data from more than 125 meta-analyses on test validity and 800 samples examining multimethod assessment suggest 4 general conclusions: (a) Psychological test validity is strong and compelling, (b) psychological test validity is comparable to medical test validity, (c) distinct assessment methods provide unique sources of information, and (d) clinicians who rely exclusively on interviews are prone to incomplete understandings. Following principles for optimal nomothetic research, the authors suggest that a multimethod assessment battery provides a structured means for skilled clinicians to maximize the validity of individualized assessments. Future investigations should move beyond an examination of test scales to focus more on the role of psychologists who use tests as helpful tools to furnish patients and referral sources with professional consultation.

Psychological Testing and Psychological Assessment: A Review of Evidence and Issues.

Reactance theory might be profitably applied to understanding failures in persuasive health communication but for one drawback: The developer of the theory contends that reactance cannot be measured. Rejecting this position, this paper develops four alternative conceptual perspectives on the nature of reactance (i.e., combinations of cognition and affect), then provides an empirical test of each. Two parallel studies were conducted, one advocating flossing (N = 196), the other urging students to limit their alcohol intake (N = 200). In both cases, a composite index of anger and negative cognitions fully mediated the effects of threat-to-freedom and trait reactance on attitude and intention. The data showed that, in fact, reactance can be operationalized as a composite of self-report indices of anger and negative cognitions. The implications for persuasive communication, in general, are considered as well the specific findings for flossing and drinking.

On the Nature of Reactance and its Role in Persuasive Health Communication

The difficulty of finding a relationship between attitudes and behavior is one of the greatest controversies in recent social science research. The purpose of this study was to determine whether attitudinal relevance substantially affects the magnitude of the correlation between attitudes and behavior and whether the effects are content-free. Using meta- analysis the authors integrated findings from 138 attitude-behavior correlations with a total sample size of 90908. The behaviors they studied ranged over 19 different categories and a variety of miscellaneous topics. The results showed a strong overall attitude- behavior relationship (r = .79) when methodological artifacts were eliminated. As predicted the higher the attitudinal relevance the stronger the relationship between attitudes and behavior. This effect held true across diverse content domains. Implications for communication theory and practice are discussed. (authors)

Attitude-Behavior Relations: A Meta-Analysis of Attitudinal Relevance and Topic

Abstract This study aims to investigate health behaviors and psychological burdens in adolescent children of cancer parents. We compared health behaviors and mental health outcomes between 266 adolescent children with a parent diagnosed with cancer and 3163 control adolescents aged 12–19 years using data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) from 2010 to 2018. Alcohol use of adolescents increased between 2 and 5 years after parental cancer diagnosis (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.72; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01–2.94) but decreased after 5 years. Parental cancer was associated with increased vaccination uptake in adolescents within 1 year of diagnosis (aOR, 3.19; 95% CI, 1.55–6.54), but after 2 years, there was no difference from rates in their peers. Maternal cancer was associated with increased depression among adolescents (aOR, 1.73; 95% CI, 1.10 − 2.73). Although the risks of suicidal thoughts/plans/attempts increased within 1 year after parental cancer diagnosis (aOR, 2.96; 95% CI, 1.00 − 8.83), it reduced 2 years after diagnosis, leading to no significant difference from the frequency in peers. Within five years after the parent was diagnosed with cancer, support for their adolescent children's health behaviors and mental health is necessary in the community.

Health behaviors and psychological burden of adolescents after parental cancer diagnosis

ABSTRACT Background Art therapy is useful for immigrant youth to reduce depression, anxiety and stress through visualised images. Aim This study determined indications of psychological outcomes, acceptability and satisfaction of art therapy among Korean immigrant youth. Methods A quasi-experiment (one-group pre-, post-test) design, with 25 young people (13–24 years old) in the Republic of Korea receiving five weekly sessions of art therapy from November 2020 to March 2021. Patient Health Questionnaire-9, Generalised Anxiety Disorder-7 and Perceived Stress Scale were used as psychological measurements to determine the programme's indications of outcomes; acceptability and satisfaction were measured. Results The level of depression severity and perceived stress level was improved and the level of depression severity was maintained at the three-month follow-up as a result of art therapy. According to the acceptance rate, 79.2% found it useful and 78.2% found it enjoyable. Conclusions Art therapy for Korean immigrant youth has the promising result. However, extensive study is necessary to rigorously examine its effectiveness and develop interventions suitable across cultures. Implications for practice This study showed that art therapy could be an acceptable and efficacious therapeutic mental health intervention for immigrant youth who face challenges with verbal communication and undergo acculturative stress. Plain-language summary This study was conducted to examine the outcomes of psychological measurements, and acceptability of, as well as satisfaction with, five sessions of art therapy delivered to 25 Korean immigrant youths (13–24 years old). The study found positive changes perceived by immigrant youths. The levels of depression severity and perceived stress were improved, and the reduced depression severity was maintained at the three-month follow-up. The study also reported art therapy as 79.2% found it useful and 78.2% found it enjoyable, contributing to their psychological stability. Overall, art therapy could be an acceptable and efficacious therapeutic mental health intervention for immigrant youths, who face challenges with verbal communication and experience acculturative stress.
