Fast-growing field of magnetically recyclable nanocatalysts.

Binary transition metal oxides (BTMOs) possess higher reversible capacity, better structural stability and electronic conductivity, and have been widely studied to be novel electrode materials for supercapacitors. In this review, we present an extensive description of BTMO materials and the most commonly used synthetic methods. Furthermore, we review several notable BTMOs and their composites in application of supercapacitors. With the increasing attention for energy storage, more and more exciting results about BTMO materials will be reported in the future.

Binary metal oxide: advanced energy storage materials in supercapacitors

Designing and preparing porous transition metal ferrites without using any template, shape-directing agent, and surfactant is a challenge. Herein, heterojunction MFe2O4 (M = Co, Ni, Cu, Mn) nanofiber (NF) based films with three-dimensional configurations were synthesized by electrospinning and the subsequent thermal treatment processes. Characterization results indeed show the 3D net-like textural structures of the electrospun spinel-type MFe2O4 NFs. In particular, the resulting MFe2O4 NFs have lengths up to several dozens of micrometers with an average diameter size of about 150 nm and possess abundant micro/meso/macropores on both the surface and within the films. The hierarchically porous structures and high surface areas of these MFe2O4 NFs (for example, the CoFe2O4 NFs possess a larger BET specific surface area (61.48 m2 g−1) than those of the CoFe2O4 NPs (5.93 m2 g−1)) can afford accessible transport channels for effectively decreasing the mass transport resistances, enhancing the electrical conductivity, and increasing the density and reactivity of the exposed catalytic active sites. All these advantages will be responsible for the better electrocatalytic performances of these MFe2O4 NFs compared with their structural isomers (i.e. the MFe2O4 NPs) for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and H2O2 reduction in alkaline solution. Meanwhile, both the OER and H2O2 reduction catalytic activities for these MFe2O4 NFs obey the order of CoFe2O4 NFs > CuFe2O4 NFs > NiFe2O4 NFs > MnFe2O4 NFs > Fe2O3 NFs. The CoFe2O4 NFs represent a new class of highly efficient non-noble-metal catalysts for both OER and H2O2 reduction/detection in alkaline media.

A novel material of porous Co3O4/CuO hollow polyhedral nanocages (HPNCs) derived-from metal-organic frameworks (MOF) for photocatalytic water oxidation was reported for the first time and the molar ratio of Co/Cu in this kind material was optimized The Co3O4/CuO HPNCs composites were characterized by multiple experiments (FETEM, HRTEM, SEM, TGA, PXRD, EDX, ICP-AES, BET, XPS) to confirm the structure and the component A high turnover frequency (TOF) of 49 × 10−3 s−1 per metal atom was obtained over Co3O4/CuO-3 HPNCs, which is comparable to those published cobalt based catalysts At the same time, Co3O4/CuO-3 HPNCs showed a maximum oxygen yield of 50% and quantum yield of 49% This composite of Co3O4/CuO HPNCs containing heterojunctions may enhance the photocatalytic performance of water oxidationVarious characterization methods prove that Co3O4/CuO HPNCs composites are stable and robust heterogeneous photocatalytic catalysts that can be used repeatedly without any loss in activity According to the experimental results, we speculate that there are two kinds of reaction mechanisms in this light-driven water oxidation system One mechanism is widely accepted that high valence metal species play a role in the reaction system The other one is that the heterojunctions of Co3O4/CuO HPNCs make a great contribution to improve the activity of photocatalytic water oxidation Meanwhile, we put forward a new idea to design a series of metal oxide catalysts with heterojunctions derived from MOF for light-driven water oxidation

The synthesis of supported bimetal oxide nanoparticles for catalytic applications has greatly suffered from the strong phase separation trend and particle aggregation problem. We found that just adding facile pre-drying treatment before the calcination step can sufficiently avoid the phase separation and prevent the particles from aggregation. Well dispersed pure phase CuFe2O4 supported on a mesoporous silica catalyst was thus synthesized by using copper and iron nitrates as the precursors and KIT-6 as the support. It was used as the catalyst for the asymmetric hydrosilylation of aryl ketone. The reaction yield and ee value can both reach 93%. The synthesized CuFe2O4 possesses superparamagnetic properties, which ensures it can be easily recycled by an external magnetic field for reuse. This synthesis strategy can also be applied to various bimetal oxides, including NiFe2O4, CuCr2O4, CoFe2O4, etc.
