Synthesis, properties, and applications of oxide nanomaterials

We present a scheme for tuning the photonic band gap (PBG) by an external electric field in a ferroelectric inverse opal structure. The inverse opals, consisting of ferroelectric (Pb,La)(Zr,Ti)O3 (PLZT) ceramics, were synthesized by a sol–gel process. Optical reflection spectra show that the PBG of the PLZT inverse opals shifts continuously with the change in the applied electric field. As the photonic crystals (PCs) consist of the high-refractive-index constituent and possess an “all-solid” structure, it should supply a more reliable mode to tune the PBG by the electric field for the superprism effect in PCs. It should be of high interest in device applications.

Ferroelectric inverse opals with electrically tunable photonic band gap

Three-dimensionally ordered macroporous (3DOM) ZrO2:Eu3+ inverse opal materials prepared by polystyrene (PS) colloidal crystal templating, using the sol−gel method, were successfully fabricated. Their crystal structure, morphology, and photoluminescence (PL) properties and the effect of the photonic stop-band on the spontaneous emission of Eu3+ ions were studied and compared with those of the nonporous sample. In the 3DOM ZrO2:Eu3+, significant suppression for the 5D0-7F1 transition peaking at 590 nm was observed, which was in good agreement with the photonic band gap calculated (∼586 nm). After grinding the 3D ZrO2:Eu3+ inverse opal material, the suppression of emission was restored due to the disappearance of the photonic band gap. In the 3DOM ZrO2:Eu3+, the luminescent lifetime of 5D0-7FJ depended strongly on emission wavelengths, which was mainly attributed to the appearance of different Eu3+ centers. Photonic band gap and photoluminescence properties of LaPO4:Tb inverse opal

Inverse opal photonic crystals based on a luminescent matrix of Mn2+-doped Zn2SiO4 were synthesized, and their photoluminescence was investigated using a fluorescence microscope and spectrometer. Strong suppression of the luminescence from the Zn2SiO4:Mn2+ matrix in certain directions was observed directly due to the overlap of the pseudo-photonic bandgap (PPBG) and the emission band. As a result, the luminescence in other orientations (outer of the PPBG) was enhanced significantly. This cost-effective, non-lithographic method to produce luminescent inverse opals is expected to be useful for the fabrication of anisotropic photonic crystal light sources for display applications.
