About the Propagation of RSDN‐20 “Alpha” Signals in the Earth‐Ionosphere Waveguide During Geomagnetic Disturbances

The paper presents the results of numerical modeling of the propagation in the high latitude region of ultra-long radio waves at the carrier frequencies of the long-range navigation radio engineering system (RSDN-20). Computational experiments were carried out for different distributions of the ionospheric electron concentration, which were constructed based on data from the EISCAT 42m incoherent scatter radar on the Svalbard archipelago during the geomagnetic substorm of December 11, 2015, and for the calm state of the ionosphere on the eve of the substorm. There was a significant increase (by a factor of 2–5 or more) in the amplitude of very low-frequency (VLF) electromagnetic waves received on the Earth’s surface, which passed under the ionosphere region with particles that precipitated from the magnetosphere during a substorm. An increase in the wave resistance of the medium and a change in the phase difference between the main electrical and magnetic components of the RSDN-20 signals during the substorm were found. The frequency dependences of these characteristics as a function of the substorm intensity are discussed.

Propagation of Electromagnetic Waves in the Region of High Latitudes at Various States of the Ionosphere at the Frequencies of the RSDN-20 (Alpha) Radionavigation System

A study is performed of ionospheric disturbances caused by an interplanetary shock wave on January 24, 2012, and its subsequent substorm. Results are presented from an analysis of how changes in the vertical electron density profile affect the amplitude and phase characteristics of signals with frequencies of the Beta time signal service, recorded at the Earth’s surface.

Propagation of Electromagnetic Waves with Frequencies of the Beta Time Signal Service Through the Ionosphere in Different States at High Latitudes

The effect of proton events of various intensities on the propagation of VLF radio signals are studied by a series of computational experiments. Various events are considered, both real GLE (ground-level enhancement) 70 and 72 and fully synthetic electron density profiles. The profiles were constructed using the RUSCOSMICS and GDMI (Global Dynamic Model of Ionosphere) models developed by the PGI and IZMIRAN. Synthetic profiles obtained using the GDMI model were used as baselines for quiet conditions and subsequent obtaining of disturbed profiles. Modeling of electromagnetic signals was carried out by a numerical model of electromagnetic wave propagation developed at PGI. The signal of the model source was the sum of harmonic oscillations at the frequencies of the RSDN-20 long-range navigation radio system (11905, 12679, 14881 Hz). Amplitude damping coefficients and phase changes are calculated for GLEs of different intensities. Calculations for high-latitude and mid-latitude regions showed the presence of a latitudinal dependence of the influence of GLE events on the amplitudes and phases of the RSDN-20 signals.

Рассмотрены различные события, как реальные GLE (ground-level enhancement) так и синтетические профили концентрации электронов. Для построения профилей использовались модели RUSCOSMICS и GDMI (Global Dynamic Model of Ionosphere), разрабатываемые силами сотрудников ПГИ и ИЗМИРАН. Моделирование электромагнитных сигналов производилось численной моделью распространения электромагнитных волн, разработанной в ПГИ. Сигнал модельного источника представлял собой сумму гармонических колебаний на частотах радиотехнической системы дальней навигации РСДН-20 (11905, 12679, 14881 Гц).

In order to analyze the radio waves propagation conditions in non-uniform impedance channels, the amplitude and additional phase of the electromagnetic field of the VLF radio navigation system RSDN-20 were measured. The radio paths of latitudinal strike have been studied: path 1 “Novosibirsk - Ulan-Ude”, the length is 1580 km; path 2 “Komsomolsk-on-Amur - Ulan-Ude”, the length is 2080 km. The daily variations of the amplitude and the additional phase of the 11.9 and 14.88 kHz radio signals are considered.
