Enterprise Content Management (ECM) is an emerging concept involving numerous software vendors, consultants, and information management practitioners around increasing market potential. However, there exist yet few academic reports on ECM from the viewpoint of organizational system implementations. This article analyses 58, mainly practitioner-oriented, case narratives of ECM projects and implementations to identify a framework of major issues that require managerial attention in organizations. The main areas covered by the framework are: objectives/impacts sought with ECM, enterprise model to be supported by ECM, content model, technological infrastructure, administrative resources and practices, and change management issues. The issues identified in this framework serve information management practitioners to facilitate ECM development from the viewpoint of the enterprise. Comparing the concept of ECM with related research on information resource management, electronic document management, and knowledge management, we argue that ECM represents a modern, integrated perspective on information management.

Enterprise Content Management: An Integrated Perspective on Information Management

There is consensus in the literature that spreadsheets are both ubiquitous and error-prone, but little direct evidence concerning whether spreadsheet errors frequently lead to bad decision making. We interviewed 45 executives and senior managers/analysts in the private, public, and non-profit sectors about their experiences with spreadsheet errors and quality control procedures. Differences across sectors do not seem pronounced. Almost all respondents report that spreadsheet errors are common. Most can report instances in which the errors directly led to losses or bad decisions, but opinions differ as to whether the consequences of spreadsheet errors are severe. Error checking and quality control procedures are in most cases informal. A significant minority of respondents believe such ad hoc processes are sufficient because the “human in the loop” can detect any gross errors. Others thought more formal spreadsheet quality control processes could be beneficial.

A method and system for reducing transmitted code for remote application forms. First code to link one or more functions to a remote application id received at a client digital processing system (DPS). Each function contains instruction code to generate object construction code and set of object parameters. The object construction code is used to create a corresponding object. The one or more functions are linked to the remote application form. Second code is received to call one or more of the functions. One or more of the functions is called to construct one or more objects at the client DPS. There are many different approaches to student peer assessment. In this paper I lay out the pedagogical philosophy behind my own use of student peer reviews. These should not only be seen as adding to the amount of formative feedback in a class, nor are they only about the development of certain higher-order cognitive skills. Properly aligned with an overall assessment strategy, peer reviewing can help build a stronger learning community. I describe such a strategy and my experience using PRAZE, an online tool for student peer reviewing, as well as students' response to the tool and its use.
