Kopp,Shinji Fukuda,Atsushi Hozawa,Masayuki Yamamoto,Sadayoshi Ito,Jun Wada,Yoshihisa Tomioka,Takaaki Abe +55 more
TL;DR: It is shown that phenol sulfate, a gut microbiota-derived metabolite, is increased in diabetic kidney disease and contributes to the pathology by promoting kidney injury, suggesting phenyl sulfate could be used a marker and therapeutic target for the treatment of diabetic kidneys disease.
Trajectories of kidney function in diabetes: a clinicopathological update
Megumi Oshima,Miho Shimizu,Masayuki Yamanouchi,Tadashi Toyama,Akinori Hara,Kengo Furuichi,Takashi Wada +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discussed the trajectories of kidney function in patients with diabetes and their underlying factors, as well as their correlation with histopathological changes in the kidney and patient outcomes.

Long-term Outcomes of Japanese Type 2 Diabetic Patients With Biopsy-Proven Diabetic Nephropathy
Miho Shimizu,Kengo Furuichi,Tadashi Toyama,Shinji Kitajima,Akinori Hara,Kiyoki Kitagawa,Yasunori Iwata,Norihiko Sakai,Toshinari Takamura,Mitsuhiro Yoshimura,Hitoshi Yokoyama,Shuichi Kaneko,Takashi Wada +12 more
TL;DR: The study suggests that the characteristic pathological lesions as well as macroalbuminuria (severe proteinuria) were closely related to the long-term outcomes of biopsy-proven diabetic nephropathy in type 2 diabetes.

Gut microbiota-derived D-serine protects against acute kidney injury
Yusuke Nakade,Yasunori Iwata,Kengo Furuichi,Masashi Mita,Kenji Hamase,Ryuichi Konno,Taito Miyake,Norihiko Sakai,Shinji Kitajima,Tadashi Toyama,Yasuyuki Shinozaki,Akihiro Sagara,Taro Miyagawa,Akinori Hara,Miho Shimizu,Yasutaka Kamikawa,Kouichi Sato,Megumi Oshima,Shiori Yoneda-Nakagawa,Yuta Yamamura,Shuichi Kaneko,Tetsuya Miyamoto,Masumi Katane,Hiroshi Homma,Hidetoshi Morita,Wataru Suda,Masahira Hattori,Takashi Wada +27 more
TL;DR: The renoprotective effects of gut-derived D-serine in AKI are demonstrated, light is shed on the interactions between the gut microbiota and the kidney in both health and AKI, and D-Serine is highlighted as a potential new therapeutic target and biomarker for AKI.
Urinary levels of chemokines (MCAF/MCP-1, IL-8) reflect distinct disease activities and phases of human IgA nephropathy
Hitoshi Yokoyama,Takashi Wada,Kengo Furuichi,Chikako Segawa,Miho Shimizu,Kenichi Kobayashi,Shao-bo Su,Naofumi Mukaida,Kouji Matsushima,Kouji Matsushima +9 more
TL;DR: Observations demonstrated that MCAF and IL‐8 were differentially expressed in kidneys with IgAN, and their subtypes, and suggest that chemokines may be involved in the pathogenesis of IgAN at distinct phases or pathological lesions, possibly through the recruitment and activation of a distinct type of leukocyte.
