Aspect] is a simple and practical aspect-oriented extension to Java With just a few new constructs, AspectJ provides support for modular implementation of a range of crosscutting concerns. In AspectJ's dynamic join point model, join points are well-defined points in the execution of the program; pointcuts are collections of join points; advice are special method-like constructs that can be attached to pointcuts; and aspects are modular units of crosscutting implementation, comprising pointcuts, advice, and ordinary Java member declarations. AspectJ code is compiled into standard Java bytecode. Simple extensions to existing Java development environments make it possible to browse the crosscutting structure of aspects in the same kind of way as one browses the inheritance structure of classes. Several examples show that AspectJ is powerful, and that programs written using it are easy to understand.

An overview of AspectJ

The C programming language

Source code querying tools allow programmers to explore relations between different parts of the code base. This paper describes such a tool, named CodeQuest. It combines two previous proposals, namely the use of logic programming and database systems. As the query language we use safe Datalog, which was originally introduced in the theory of databases. That provides just the right level of expressiveness; in particular recursion is indispensable for source code queries. Safe Datalog is like Prolog, but all queries are guaranteed to terminate, and there is no need for extra-logical annotations. Our implementation of Datalog maps queries to a relational database system. We are thus able to capitalise on the query optimiser provided by such a system. For recursive queries we implement our own optimisations in the translation from Datalog to SQL. Experiments confirm that this strategy yields an efficient, scalable code querying system.

J2EE is a middleware architecture augmented with supporting tools for developing large scale client/server and multi-tier applications. J2EE uses Enterprise JavaBeans as its component model. The realization of these components by a J2EE application server can be conceptually decomposed into distinct aspects such as persistence, transaction management, security, and load balancing. However, current servers do not employ aspect-oriented programming in their implementation. In this paper, we describe a new aspect language, AspectJ2EE, geared towards the generalized implementation of J2EE application servers, and applications within this framework. AspectJ2EE can be easily employed to extend the fixed set of services that these servers provide with new services such as logging and performance monitoring. Even tier-cutting concerns like encryption, data compression, and memoization can be added while avoiding the drags of cross-cutting and scattered code. AspectJ2EE is less general (and hence less complicated) than AspectJ, yet demonstrably powerful enough for the systematic development of large scale (and distributed) applications. The introduction of parameterized aspects makes aspects in AspectJ2EE more flexible and reusable than aspects in AspectJ. AspectJ2EE also generalizes the process of binding services to user applications in the application server into a novel deploy-time weaving of aspects. Deploy-time weaving is superior to traditional weaving mechanisms, in that it preserves the object model, has a better management of aspect scope, and presents a more understandable and maintainable semantic model.
