The SAGE Handbook of Historical Theory

This paper explores the conflicting roles of archivists in the execution of their archival mandates in directing the management, preservation, and disposition of current public records. A postmodernist approach and Frank Upward’s Australian continuum model (Upward, “Continuum Mechanics and Memory Banks,” 84–109.) have been explored and contextualized in the milieu of post-apartheid South Africa. The article proposes a two-pronged strategy for a more comprehensive approach from the public archivists and their interactions with the records management practitioners, by applying Oliver and Foscarini’s record-keeping informatics pyramid (Oliver and Foscarini, Records Management and Information Culture, 16.). From transaction to collaboration: redefining the academic-archivist relationship in business collections

Over the past decade, a rich body of research and practice has emerged under the rubrics of electronic records, digital preservation and digital curation. Most of this work has taken place as research activity (often financed by government agencies) within libraries and information/computer science departments. Many projects focus on one format of information, such as research publications or data, potentially de-contextualizing individual records. Meanwhile, most institutional archives and manuscript repositories, which possess a rich theoretical and practical framework for preserving context among mixed analog materials, have failed to extend their capabilities to digital records. As a result, relatively few institutions have implemented systematic methods to capture, preserve and provide access to the complete range of documentation that end users need to understand and interpret past human activity. The Practical E-Records Method attempts to address this problem by providing easy-to-implement software reviews, guidance/policy templates, and program recommendations that blend digital curation research findings with traditional archival processes and workflows. Using the method discussed in this paper, archives and manuscript repositories can use existing resources to incrementally develop digital curation skills, building a collaborative, expanding program in the process. Archival programs that make digital curation a systematic institutional function will systematically gather, preserve, and provide access to genres of documentation that are contextually-rich and highly susceptible to loss, complementing efforts undertaken by librarians, information scientists and external service providers. Over the next year, the suggested techniques will be tested and refined at the University of Illinois Archives and possibly elsewhere.

Making Digital Curation a Systematic Institutional Function

In an article in the Mail & Guardian, Ra’eesa Pather reported that a ministerial task team established by the Department of Basic Education has recommended that history should be a compulsory subject in South African schools from 2023.1 According to this report, this will apply to children Grades 10 to 12. This development provides the country’s memory institutions with ideal incentives to re-position their collections as valuable tools in the school pedagogy experience and embrace the Fourth Industrial Revolution. This article explores archive facilities around the world and demonstrates how these institutions provide educational opportunities to schoolchildren and the youth. Many archival institutions have digitised collections that are relevant to the school curriculum programmes. This provides incentives for attracting new users to view and use the archival collections that are connected to the school syllabus. This article explores different websites and social media pages of archives around the world and similar facilities in South Africa that may assist in strengthening the proposal for history becoming a compulsory school subject. Data was collected by means of searches on websites and social media sites of archives facilities in Australia, Chile, the United Kingdom and the United States. In addition, on-site visits were undertaken to archive facilities and heritage sites in the United States and South Africa.

Making history a compulsory school subject – opportunities for memory institutions

Archivists certainly take note of any new publication by Richard J. Cox, a prolific writer on archival topics who also serves as a professor in library and information science at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Information Sciences. His most recent volume, Archives & Archivists in the Information Age, examines the ever-changing role of the archivist and will likely draw wider readership across the information profession due to the currency of interest in how society is changing in the information age. Cox brings a wealth of experience as an archivist, archival consultant, and archival educator to a range of topics that will resonate with a number of audiences. Cox has extensively researched this topic and draws upon literature in a variety of disciplines. From a historical perspective, archivists will gain a sense of how their profession has changed through the years. Cox studies shifts in professional responsibilities and identity (or lack thereof) as revealed in position advertisements for entry-level archives and records management jobs and how the archival knowledge base has grown through an analysis of publication patterns from 1950–1999. Not only does Cox foster a greater knowledge of the profession’s roots but he also articulates a vision for the future in the age of information. He urges archivists and records managers to engage in more scholarship for public consumption, to find ways to measure success and remain relevant as their employers adopt new trends in management, and to examine the nature of records, documents, and information and the implications of the digital era for the profession. The volume’s initial chapter, “Why Organizations Need Archivists,” generally describes the basic responsibilities in archives and discusses the merits of various qualifications employers might consider in potential hires. Also included is a brief section on successfully preparing and distributing a job announcement. Those with responsibility for hiring, both in libraries and other organizational settings, can also benefit from the chapter on the historical development and evaluation of the merits of archival education programs and the certification examination as they consider the credentials of applicants for available positions.
