While some promote method chaining as a good practice for improving code readability, others refer to it as a bad practice that worsens code quality. In this paper, we first investigate whether method chaining is a programming style accepted by real-world programmers. To answer this question, we collected 2,814 Java repositories on GitHub and analyzed historical trends in the frequency of method chaining. The results of our analysis revealed the increasing use of method chaining; 23.1% of method invocations were part of method chains in 2018, whereas only 16.0% were such invocations in 2010. We then explore language features that are helpful to the method-chaining style but have not been supported yet in Java. For this aim, we conducted manual inspections of method chains that are randomly sampled from the collected repositories. We also estimated how effective they are to encourage the method-chaining style if they are adopted in Java.

An Empirical Study of Method Chaining in Java

Model transformations are among the key concepts of model-driven engineering (MDE), and dedicated model transformation languages (MTLs) emerged with the popularity of the MDE pssaradigm about 15 to 20 years ago. MTLs claim to increase the ease of development of model transformations by abstracting from recurring transformation aspects and hiding complex semantics behind a simple and intuitive syntax. Nonetheless, MTLs are rarely adopted in practice, there is still no empirical evidence for the claim of easier development, and the argument of abstraction deserves a fresh look in the light of modern general purpose languages (GPLs) which have undergone a significant evolution in the last two decades. In this paper, we report about a study in which we compare the complexity and size of model transformations written in three different languages, namely (i) the Atlas Transformation Language (ATL), (ii) Java SE5 (2004–2009), and (iii) Java SE14 (2020); the Java transformations are derived from an ATL specification using a translation schema we developed for our study. In a nutshell, we found that some of the new features in Java SE14 compared to Java SE5 help to significantly reduce the complexity of transformations written in Java by as much as 45%. At the same time, however, the relative amount of complexity that stems from aspects that ATL can hide from the developer, which is about 40% of the total complexity, stays about the same. Furthermore we discovered that while transformation code in Java SE14 requires up to 25% less lines of code, the number of words written in both versions stays about the same. And while the written number of words stays about the same their distribution throughout the code changes significantly. Based on these results, we discuss the concrete advancements in newer Java versions. We also discuss to which extent new language advancements justify writing transformations in a general purpose language rather than a dedicated transformation language. We further indicate potential avenues for future research on the comparison of MTLs and GPLs in a model transformation context.

Contrasting dedicated model transformation languages versus general purpose languages: a historical perspective on ATL versus Java based on complexity and size

Supply chain management is a critical aspect for every manufacturing business, in particular for safety critical systems where quality assessment and requirement satisfaction are evaluated in order to guarantee a certification of the final system. In this paper we present a blockchain-based methodology that focuses on enforcing strict data access control and that securely includes manufacturing equipment in the supply chain management process. The methodology provides cyber-security guarantees exploiting secure automated interaction between a blockchain supply chain management system and industrial manufacturing devices. A prototype of the proposed approach is implemented with state-of-the-art distributed ledger technologies integrating low-power devices hardened through the application of hardware security modules.

Streszczenie. Artykul omawia rozne odmiany dobrych praktyk, ktore mają zastosowanie w projektowaniu zorientowanym obiektowo – heurystyki, zasady, skazy oraz wzorce. Na tej podstawie przedstawione zostają glowne modele jakościowe projektu, tzw. modele FCM (ang. Factor-Criteria-Metric). W pracy zawarte są rowniez metody pomiaru i identyfikacji problemow związanych z wymienionymi praktykami.

Zasady, heurystyki oraz skazy w projektowaniu zorientowanym obiektowo

Context: There is an overwhelming prevalence of companies developing software in global software development (GSD) contexts. The existing body of knowledge, however, falls short of providing comprehensive empirical evidence on the implication of GSD contexts on software quality for evolving software systems. Therefore there is limited evidence to support practitioners that need to make informed decisions about ongoing or future GSD projects. Objective: This thesis work seeks to explore changes in quality, as well as to gather confounding factors that influence quality, for software systems that evolve in GSD contexts. Method: The research work in this thesis includes empirical work that was performed through exploratory case studies. This involved analysis of quantitative data consisting of defects as an indicator for quality, and measures that capture software evolution, and qualitative data from company documentations, interviews, focus group meetings, and questionnaires. An extensive literature review was also performed to gather information that was used to support the empirical investigations. Results: Offshoring software development work, to a location that has employees with limited or no prior experience with the software product, as observed in software transfers, can have a negative impact on quality. Engaging in long periods of distributed development with an offshore site and eventually handing over all responsibilities to the offshore site can be an alternative to software transfers. This approach can alleviate a negative effect on quality. Finally, the studies highlight the importance of taking into account the GSD context when investigating quality for software that is developed in globally distributed environments. This helps with making valid inferences about the development settings in GSD projects in relation to quality. Conclusion: The empirical work presented in this thesis can be useful input for practitioners that are planning to develop software in globally distributed environments. For example, the insights on confounding factors or mitigation practices that are linked to quality in the empirical studies can be used as input to support decision-making processes when planning similar GSD projects. Consequently, lessons learned from the empirical investigations were used to formulate a method, GSD-QuID, for investigating quality using defects for evolving systems. The method is expected to help researchers avoid making incorrect inferences about the implications of GSD contexts on quality for evolving software systems, when using defects as a quality indicator. This in turn will benefit practitioners that need the information to make informed decisions for software that is developed in similar circumstances.

The Law of Demeter formulates the rule-of-thumb that modules in object-oriented program code should "only talk to their immediate friends". While it is said to foster information hiding for object-oriented software, solid empirical evidence confirming the positive effects of following the Law of Demeter is still lacking. In this paper, we conduct an empirical study to confirm that violating the Law of Demeter has a negative impact on software quality, in particular that it leads to more bugs. We implement an Eclipse plugin to calculate the amount of violations of both the strong and the weak form of the law in five Eclipse sub-projects. Then we discover the correlation between violations of the law and the bug-proneness and perform a logistic regression analysis of three sub-projects. We also combine the violations with other OO metrics to build up a model for predicting the bug-proneness for a given class. Empirical results show that violations of the Law of Demeter indeed highly correlate with the number of bugs and are early predictor of the software quality. Based on this evidence, we conclude that obeying the Law of Demeter is a straight-forward approach for developers to reduce the number of bugs in their software.
