This paper presents the following four advances in iris recognition: 1) more disciplined methods for detecting and faithfully modeling the iris inner and outer boundaries with active contours, leading to more flexible embedded coordinate systems; 2) Fourier-based methods for solving problems in iris trigonometry and projective geometry, allowing off-axis gaze to be handled by detecting it and ldquorotatingrdquo the eye into orthographic perspective; 3) statistical inference methods for detecting and excluding eyelashes; and 4) exploration of score normalizations, depending on the amount of iris data that is available in images and the required scale of database search. Statistical results are presented based on 200 billion iris cross-comparisons that were generated from 632 500 irises in the United Arab Emirates database to analyze the normalization issues raised in different regions of receiver operating characteristic curves.

Image understanding for iris biometrics: A survey

A system and method for securely streaming encrypted digital media content out of a digital container to a user's media player. This streaming occurs after the digital container has been delivered to the user's machine and after the user has been authorized to access the encrypted content. The user's operating system and media player treat the data stream as if it were a being delivered over the Internet (or other network) from a streaming web server. However, no Internet connection is required after the container has been delivered to the user and the data stream suffers no quality loss due to network traffic or web server access problems. In this process of the invention, the encrypted content files are decrypted and fed to the user's media player in real time and are never written to the user's hard drive or storage device. This process makes unauthorized copying of the digital content contained in the digital container virtually impossible.

Music is blanket transmitted (for example, via satellite downlink transmission) to each customer's computer-based user station. Customers preselect from a list of available music in advance using an interactive screen selector, and pay only for music that they choose to have recorded for unlimited playback, for example, by a “CD burner”. An antipiracy “ID tag” is woven into the recorded music so that any illegal copies therefrom may be traced to the purchase transaction. Music is transmitted on a fixed schedule or through an active scheduling process that monitors music requests from all or a subset of satellite receivers and adjust scheduling according to demand for various CD's. Receivers store selections that are likely to be preferred by a specific customer. In those instances where weather conditions, motion atmospheric layers or dish obstructions result in data loss, the system downloads the next transmission of the requested CD and uses both transmissions to produce a “good copy”. In conjunction with the blanket transmission of more popular music, an automated CD manufacturing facility may be provided to manufacture CD's that are not frequently requested and distribute them by ground transportation.

An image processing system for imaging a scene to mosaic, selecting a new viewpoint of the scene, and rendering a synthetic image from the mosaic of the scene from that new viewpoint. The synthesized image is then combined with a second image. The combination of the second image and the synthetic image generates a composite image containing a realistic combination of objects in the second image and the scene. Using this system, a production set or other scene need only be created once, then imaged by the system. Thereafter, through image processing, any view of the scene can be synthesized and combined with separately imaged performers or other objects to generate the composite image. As such, a production set or other scene can be repetitively reused without recreating the physical scene.

A method and apparatus for preserving the dynamic range of a relatively high dynamic range information stream (S1), illustratively a high resolution video signal, subjected to a relatively low dynamic range encoding (230, 15) and/or transport (235, 30) process(es). The invention subjects the relatively high dynamic range information stream to a segmentation and remapping process (215-225, 10) whereby each segment is remapped to the relatively low dynamic range appropriate to the encoding and/or transport process(es) utilized. An auxiliary information stream (S4) includes segment and associated remapping information such that the initial, relatively high dynamic range information stream (S1) may be recovered in a post-encoding (i.e. decoding) or post-transport (i.e., receiving) process.
