Purpose – This paper aims to present guidelines for using streaming multimedia tutorials in academic library instruction.Design/methodology/approach – Research in cognitive psychology, education and librarianship is synthesized and its application to the design of library screencast or multimedia tutorials is discussed.Findings – Guidelines are presented on determining when multimedia is needed, how to make sure multimedia tutorials are clear and understandable, how to include interactivity effectively, how to promote critical thinking, and how to design interfaces and tutorial structure based on levels of student knowledge.Originality/value – Screencasts are a relatively new form of library instruction. Guidelines in this paper are summarized in a checklist that can be used when designing screencasts or multimedia tutorials.

Guidelines for effective online instruction using multimedia screencasts

An assessment project was conducted by the Mansfield Library to evaluate the teaching and content of a research module embedded into a popular undergraduate course, Introduction to Public Speaking, part of the University of Montana's General Education Requirement. The project aimed to develop internal benchmarks and improve the curricula, as needed. Pre- and post-surveys were developed to assess student research confidence, perceptions of information tools, Web evaluation abilities, and assistance-seeking attitudes. Data from 426 student responses were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative methods. The process, results, and analysis of the project are discussed.

Continuing Assessment of Library Instruction to Undergraduates : A General Education Course Survey Research Project

Purpose – This paper seeks to focus on the design and testing of a web‐based online board game for teaching undergraduate students information literacy skills and concepts.Design/methodology/approach – Project team members with expertise in game play, creative writing, programming, library research, graphic design and information seeking developed a web‐based board game in which students used digital library resources to answer substantive questions on a scholarly topic. The project team hosted game play in a class of 75 undergraduate students. The instructor offered an extra‐credit incentive to boost participation resulting in 49 students on 13 teams playing the game. Post‐game focus group interviews revealed problematic features and redesign priorities.Findings – A total of six teams were successful meeting the criteria for the instructor's grade incentive achieving a 53.1 percent accuracy rate on their answers to substantive questions about the black death; 35.7 percent was the accuracy rate for the se...

Designing and testing a web‐based board game for teaching information literacy skills and concepts

A test of the effectiveness of interactive multimedia Web sites demonstrates that library users' topic knowledge was significantly greater after visiting the sites than before. Library users want more such sites about library services, their majors, and campus life generally. Librarians describe the roles they want to play on multimedia production teams after working on the LUMENS Project.

Testing the Effectiveness of Interactive Multimedia for Library-User Education

The Brooklyn College Library's Reference Unit developed the Library's Online Orientation Program (LOOP) to provide freshman students with an entirely online, independent, flexible, and self-paced introduction to the library's resources and services. The implementation of the LOOP gave the reference librarians much-needed time to focus their teaching on classes that require research. The LOOP includes an assessment component that was created and is managed using Sakai. Sakai was found to be effective in creating and managing the assessment, with minimal ongoing maintenance required. Reference librarians with serious time constraints can look to this model as an alternative to in-person library orientation sessions. Since very little has been written about the use of Sakai as a means of creating and managing online assessment, its benefits and drawbacks are outlined.

The Implementation of an Independent and Self-Paced Online Library Orientation for Freshman Students and the Use of Sakai as a Quiz Management System (QMS)

The purpose of the LUMENS (The Effectiveness of Multimedia for Library-User Education) Project was to train library educators to build interactive multimedia Web sites using Macromedia Flash and to enlist library users in a test of these sites to determine whether interactive multimedia web sites are effective vehicles for conveying library-user education content. The research effort included a large-scale, distance-education training effort because few library educators are trained in interactive multimedia production.
