A system for evaluating the performance of beam forming antennas based on correlations of signal to noise measurements of individual scattering elements in the antennas. A signal source provides a signal having a first frequency to an input of the antenna. Each of the antenna's scattering elements are individually selectable to radiate the signal. A control signal sequentially turns off and on each scattering element while radiating the signal. Also, a characteristic of the signal radiated by each scattering element is separately measured and each difference between the characteristics are identified and compared to one or more threshold values. A report regarding the differences that exceed the threshold value is provided to a user.

Employing correlation measurements to remotely evaluate beam forming antennas

A single device temperature sensor based on amorphous silicon thin film transistor (a-Si TFT) is proposed. First, we measured the transfer characteristics of a-Si TFTs with different sizes in the operating temperature range (220 K, 248 K, 273 K, 298 K, 323 K, and 345 K). Measurements indicate that the drain current of ON-state a-Si TFTs is sensitive to the change of ambient temperature. There is an obvious exponential relationship between drain current and ambient temperature. Next, the principle of temperature dependence of drain current was analyzed, and the temperature dependence with different channel sizes and bias voltages was compared. On this basis, the linear relationship between the logarithm of drain current and the reciprocal of temperature was established by piecewise fitting. The fitting results show that the relationship has good linearity and sensitivity at 220K–323K and can be well applied to a-Si TFTs of different sizes. Finally, according to the established linear relationship, we gave a sensing scheme to realize the measurement of temperature. It is significant to use a-Si TFT as temperature sensor to detect the ambient temperature of devices and circuits in many fields.

A method for beam forming includes providing multiple instances of holographic metasurface antennas (HMAs), a reference wave source coupled to the HMAs, and a hologram function for each of the HMAs; combining the object waves of the plurality of HMAs, generated in response to the reference wave, to produce a composite beam; and modifying a phase angle of the object wave from one or more of the HMAs by modifying the hologram function of the one or more HMAs in order to modify the composite beam.

A liquid-crystal antenna apparatus includes a liquid-crystal antenna unit. The liquid-crystal unit includes a first substrate, a second substrate, a first radiator, a second radiator, a main radiator, a liquid-crystal layer, and a temperature sensor. The first substrate includes a first surface and a second surface. The second substrate includes a third surface and a fourth surface, wherein the first surface and the third surface face each other. The first radiator is disposed on the first surface. The second radiator is disposed on the third surface. The main radiator is disposed on the fourth surface and used for emitting wireless signals. The liquid-crystal layer is located between the first radiator and the second radiator. The temperature sensor is disposed on at least one of the first surface, the second surface, the third surface, and the fourth surface.

A switchable dual polarization patch antenna with improved cross polarization isolation to concurrently radiate horizontally polarized signals and vertically polarized signals. A planar conductor is arranged with a first terminal and a second terminal that are vertically spaced on a portion of the planar conductor to radiate a component of a vertically polarized signal with zero degrees of phase shift from one of the two terminals and radiate another component of the vertically polarized signal having a 180 degrees of phase shift from the other of the two terminals. A hybrid coupler can provide the 180 degrees of phase shift. A horizontally polarized signal is radiated from a third terminal that is horizontally spaced on another portion of the planar conductor and coupled to a horizontally polarized signal source. The direction of the 180 phase shift for the first and second components of the vertically polarized signal may be selected. Also, a direction for a phase shift for the horizontally polarized signal may be selectable.

The conditions may affect radio frequency (RF) liquid crystal of the antenna elements. In one embodiment, the antenna comprises a physical antenna aperture having an array of surface scattering antenna elements that are controlled and operable together to form a beam for the frequency band for use in holographic beam steering and a compensation controller to perform compensation on the antenna elements based on monitored antenna conditions.

In one embodiment, the apparatus comprises: a frame having a platform to support an array of radio-frequency (RF) antenna elements of a flat panel antenna having antenna elements; a first antenna to transmit microwave energy to subsets of RF antenna elements of the segment and to receive reflected microwave energy from the subsets of RF antenna elements; a filter between the segment and the first antenna, the filter comprising an opening positioned over each of the subsets of RF antenna elements at different times to expose said each of the subsets of RF antenna elements to microwave energy transmitted by the first antenna; a second antenna to receive microwave energy transmitted though the subsets of RF antenna elements at the different times; a controller coupled to the subsets of RF antenna elements and to provide at least one stimulus or condition to the subsets of RF antenna elements; and an analyzer to provide stimulus to the subsets of RF antenna elements and to measure a characteristic of the array using one or both of the first antenna and second antenna.
