The practices of virtual reality marketing in the tourism sector, a case study of Bali, Indonesia

This paper questions the applicability of traditional notions of intermediary activities, which are usually categorized as either brokering or networking, in cases of high uncertainty regarding technologies, markets or which actors to involve. In the case of collaborative open innovation, especially in circumstances when no single organization is able to take on the challenge alone, the activities traditionally associated with intermediation do not suffice to describe what an intermediary can do to support innovation. This paper presents two cases of intermediaries working with the early phases of traffic safety innovations, and how they have managed to develop their activities beyond solely brokering and networking, but also to take an active role in the process of joint exploration and creation of knowledge. We use a qualitative approach to analyze the two cases in order to provide examples of how rethinking intermediation activities can support open innovation in a collaborative setting. The findings suggest that intermediaries taking on a more active role, which could be described as an architect which designs prerequisites and offers leadership in the process of joint exploration and creation of knowledge.

Rethinking the role of intermediaries as an architect of collective exploration and creation of knowledge in open innovation

Plain English Summary Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common and unpleasant problem affecting thousands of people. It leads to painful symptoms and time off work, and sometimes significant complications, such as kidney damage. GPs diagnose UTI in patients based on their symptoms. Often they will also check a urine sample for infecting bacteria, and for white blood cells, which show the patient’s body is generating an inflammatory reaction to the infection. Current methods to look for bacteria and inflammation are slow and sometimes unreliableit can take three days to get a result for a urine sample sent to a microbiology laboratory. As the patient has ongoing symptoms, the GP will sometimes prescribe antibiotics before the result is back. However, if the result received actually shows no infection, antibiotics could be harmful to the patient, and also to the community at large, due to increasing risk of antibiotic resistance. We plan to develop a device which can be used in GP practices to identify UTI bacteria and inflammation in five minutes. The patients will give a urine sample to the practice nurse, who will then put some of the sample into a test cartridge. This cartridge contains antibodies to common UTI bacteria, and a protein we believe will be a better test for inflammation than the current check for white blood cells. When the cartridge goes into the new detection device, the diagnosis will be made. Patient feedback on our plans was received from patient panels supporting the research team through focus groups and direct feedback. This emphasised the importance of ensuring the test is safe, easy to use for nurses, inexpensive for GP practices, and easy to store. We will ensure the device is accurate, gives results in line with standard tests, and we will ensure it enhances NHS treatment pathways.

From Invention to Innovation

Regional innovation should be adaptive because it involves uncertainties and risks, and the context of each region is critical to the success of innovation processes. However, regional areas often face unique challenges that require tailored approaches to innovation. The focus of innovation is evolving and needs to prioritize sustainability. Consequently, adaptable innovation approaches are essential to ensure the sustainability of addressing the challenges and opportunities that arise within each regional context. Thus, the paper aims to answer three research questions: 1) How are agile and open innovation concepts described within the context of regional innovation? 2) Are the concepts of agile and open innovation compatible for integration into an adaptive model in the development of regional innovation? and 3) What patterns or commonalities emerge in the comparison between theories identified for adaptive regional innovation? This research study adopts a conceptual synthesis approach to integrate the existing knowledge. It draws on two innovation concepts: agile innovation, which offers agility and open innovation to enrich collaboration in development. Our work makes a significant contribution by proposing an adaptive innovation model for regional innovation development that explains the integration of agile and open innovation. The adaptive innovation model defines essential activities such as innovation focus areas, idea management, concept development, implementation, and evaluation, which are all part of the innovation emphasis areas. It also identifies the quadruple helix as key players in this model. This methodology can be used by regional governments and policy makers to encourage regional innovation towards sustainability and resilience. © 2017 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. 

Adaptive Innovation Model Design: Integrating Agile and Open Innovation in Regional Areas Innovation

VR, or virtual reality, has developed into one of the latest and most well-liked technical advancements and could have an effect regarding the hospitality and tourism industry. “Incredible India,” a 360-degree virtual reality film produced in 2018 in collaboration between the Indian Ministry of Tourism and Google India, portrayed India as a multifaceted getaway. The utilisation of VR technology shows great promise in increasing competitive advantages within the hotel industry. Comprehensive research on VR technology's impact on the hotel business is necessary, as its adoption in India has been limited. The study intends to close this gap by investigating the advantages of integrating technology of VR in Indian hotels. Finding the main competitive benefits of VR technology adoption in hotel industry is the aim of this study. The methodology includes interviews with industry professionals and a review of the literature. According to the research, virtual reality technology can boost competitiveness by offering immersive experiences and raising customer engagement. 

Enhancing Competitive Advantages Through Virtual Reality Technology in the Hotels of India

This study attempts to create new insights into innovation management through the integration of innovation management processes and sustainable, iterative circles. Through the exploration of the use of sustainable, iterative circles in a manufacturing environment, this paper explores their role in facilitating customer-focused innovation practices. Other supporting antecedences for innovative behavior are reviewed, and their combined effect upon delivering cost-effective product developments are assessed.,Data were collected through semi-structured interviews in manufacturing organizations from the automotive industry. Interviews were conducted with senior functional managers to interpret the application of sustainable, iterative development circles. Analysis of the data was undertaken via thematic analysis based upon pertinent and emergent themes.,Sustainable, iterative development circles overcame the inherent path-dependency of traditional linear development approaches, whereas, traditional approaches structure the involvement of key business functions, iterative circles facilitate more flexible approaches to product development that more closely met the requirements of the customer, especially when those requirements are in a state of flux.,This iterative, customer-centric approach to product development reflects the increasingly dynamic market environments in which manufacturing organizations operate. Using this approach helps to focus the organization’s attention upon customer requirements rather than the challenges of adhering to the rigid dogma of a chosen development methodology.,This study proposes a new approach toward the development of innovations in manufacturing organizations utilizing the sustainable, iterative circles, and therefore, contrasts with the traditional, linear development methodologies that are usually employed.
