In this paper we describe the concept of the renewed software package UG, that is used as a flexible simulation framework for the solution of partial differential equations. A general overview of the concepts of the new implementation is given: The modularization of the software package into several libraries libGrid, libAlgebra, libDiscretization and pcl is described and all major modules are discussed in detail. User backends through scripting and visual editing are briefly considered and examples show the new features of the current implementation.

UG 4: A novel flexible software system for simulating PDE based models on high performance computers

Rammed earth is attracting renewed interest throughout the world thanks to its “green” characteristics in the context of sustainable development. Several research studies have thus recently been carried out to investigate this material. Some of them attempted to simulate the rammed earth’s mechanical behavior by using analytical or numerical models. Most of these studies assumed that there was a perfect cohesion at the interface between earthen layers. This hypothesis proved to be acceptable for the case of vertical loading, but it could be questionable for horizontal loading. To address this problem, discrete element modeling seems to be relevant to simulate a rammed earth wall. To our knowledge, no research has been conducted thus far using discrete element modeling to study a rammed earth wall. This paper presents an assessment of the discrete element modeling’s robustness for rammed earth walls. Firstly, a brief description of the discrete element modeling is presented. Then the parameters necessary for discrete element modeling of the material law of the earthen layers and their interfaces law following the Mohr–Coulomb model with a tension cut-off and post-peak softening were given. The relevance of the model and the material parameters were assessed by comparing them with experimental results from the literature. The results showed that, in the case of vertical loading, interfaces did not have an important effect. In the case of diagonal loading, model with interfaces produced better results. Interface characteristics can vary from 85 to 100% of the corresponding earthen layer’s characteristics.

Matrix-free multigrid solvers for phase-field fracture problems

In the numerical simulation of the Biot model numerical oscillations may occur if the spatial and discretization parameters are not properly chosen. When the timestep is too small the grid has to be fine enough to resolve the boundary layers that appear in the early stages of the simulation. In this work, we extend a strategy that has been successfully employed in the one-dimensional case for the detection of a critical time-step below which instabilities appear. The idea is to study under which condition the Schur complement of the poroelastic system enjoys a discrete maximum principle property. Differently from the one-dimensional case, in the vectorial case the shear modulus plays a fundamental role for the computation of the Schur complement and the maximum principle argument can be applied only for small shear. We will also investigate the sign of the entries of the Schur complement when the shear and the bulk modulus are of the same magnitude.

A Stability Condition for the Numerical Simulation of Poroelastic Systems

We present a theoretical and numerical study of mass transport in a porous medium saturated with a fluid and characterised by an evolving internal structure. The dynamics of the porous medium and the fluid as well as their reciprocal interactions are described at a coarse scale, so that the fundamental tools of Mixture Theory and Continuum Mechanics can be used. The evolution of the internal structure of the porous medium, which is here primarily imputed either to growth or to mass exchange with the fluid, is investigated by enriching the space of kinematic variables of the mixture with a set of structural descriptors, each of which is power-conjugate to generalised forces satisfying a balance law. Establishing the influence of the structural change of the porous medium on the transport properties of the mixture and, thus, on the quantities characterising fluid flow is the crux of our contribution.

We provide three-dimensional numerical simulations of the thermohaline-driven buoyancy of a brine “parcel” immersed in an initially homogeneous porous medium of hydrological interest. Our purpose is to improve our understanding of the thermohaline flow through the 3D visualization of the evolving patterns generated by the distributions of brine, temperature, and fluid density in the porous medium. We propose a possible physical interpretation of our results, which are obtained within the approximations usually employed in the context of density- and temperature-driven flow.
