Understanding sea-level processes, such as ocean tides, storm surges, tsunamis, El Nino and rises caused by climate change, is key to planning effective coastal defence. Building on David Pugh's classic book Tides, Surges and Mean Sea-Level, this substantially expanded, full-colour book now incorporates major recent technological advances in the areas of satellite altimetry and other geodetic techniques (particularly GPS), tsunami science, measurement of mean sea level and analyses of extreme sea levels. Sea-Level Science: Understanding Tides, Surges, Tsunamis and Mean Sea-Level Changes

Vertical and horizontal exchanges in Pilkington Bay, a shallow (9 m) embayment of Lake Victoria, were determined from a surface energy budget, time series measurements of temperature, and quasi synoptic transects of conductivity, temperature, and depth conducted over a 2-d period. The surface energy budget is the first from a tropical lake over a diurnal timescale. Strong stratification developed during morning and early afternoon (.40 cycles h 21 ) but was eroded beginning in the afternoon by the combination of wind and heat loss. Surface heat losses contributed .70% of the energy for surface layer deepening 82% of the time from midafternoon until midmorning. Circulation times of the surface layer were ,2 min as it deepened to 1.5 m in the afternoon and were ,12 min at night even when mixing extended to the lake bottom. Spatial differences in the rates of heating and cooling and in the depth of wind mixing caused fronts to develop on spatial scales of kilometers within the bay. Convergence of these fronts led to downwelling of surface waters and upwelling of deep waters during the stratified period. Horizontal pressure gradients due to differential heating contributed to thermocline downwelling, lateral movement of deep, anoxic waters, and generation of high-frequency internal waves, all of which contribute to vertical and horizontal transports. Although wind and heat loss at one location generally determine the depth of the surface layer and thermocline, the depths of these key features may be strongly influenced by rates of heating and cooling elsewhere in a basin. The temporal and spatial scales of advection and vertical mixing determine the flux paths of particles and solutes in aquatic ecosystems and, ultimately, lacustrine productivity. Time series measurements of surface meteorology, from which surface energy budgets can be calculated, and water column temperatures can be used as an indirect approach to determine these pathways. The data also can be used to determine internal wave dynamics, the energetics of mixing, and the role of intrusions and density driven flows in advection. Spatial-temporal variability in surface layer deepening and lateral advection in an embayment of Lake Victoria, East Africa

Effects of wind and wind-induced waves on vertical phytoplankton distribution and Microcystis aeruginosa bloom formation were studied in Meiliang Bay of Lake Taihu from September 5 to 9, 2004. Concentrations of chlorophyll a, b, and phycocyanin in the water column were used to represent the abundance of total phytoplankton, chlorophytes, and cyanobacteria, respectively. Water samples were taken under different wind and wind-induced wave conditions. Ca. 90% of Microcystis aeruginosa had densities less than that of lake water and were thereby positively buoyant. Effects of Wind and Wind-Induced Waves on Vertical Phytoplankton Distribution and Surface Blooms of Microcystis aeruginosa in Lake Taihu

Microcystis aeruginosa displays a range of variability in buoyancy in response to light which is dependent upon the previous nutrient or light history of the cell. The short-term buoyancy response to light is nested into a longer term response, over a period of days, as cyanobacteria respond to their nutrient and light climate, which may be manifested in their gas vesicle volume, photosynthetic rate and carbohydrate metabolism. Microcystis aeruginosa cultures were subjected to a range of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) or light pre-treatments before exposure to saturating irradiance, and these results are used to illustrate that populations can display a range of buoyancy responses dependent upon subtle changes in nutrient and light conditions. N-limited (0 µM) cells suffered a dilution in gas vesicle volume and increased carbohydrate content, which resulted in a loss of buoyancy. Cells in 10 µM N increased their gas vesicle content during light exposure; however, this was insufficient to maintain buoyancy in the majority of cells as carbohydrate increased. Cells in 100 µM N increased their gas vesicle volume, metabolized carbohydrate more efficiently than the N-limited treatments and retained positive buoyancy. During light exposure, there was minimal change in buoyancy in 0 µM P pretreated cells, although there was a dilution in gas vesicle volume and an increase in carbohydrate. In 0.5 µM P pre-treated cells, the proportion of individuals floating did not change, although gas vesicle volume and carbohydrate increased. There was a significant increase in gas vesicle volume in 10 µM P pre-treated cells during light exposure, and some buoyancy loss due to carbohydrate accumulation. Cells grown in the range of light intensities tested all increased their gas vesicle volume during the 24 h light treatment. The actual rate of gas vesicle production was equivalent for all three light pretreatments; however, the growth-dependent dilution rate was determined by the previous light history, which resulted in different relative gas vesicle volume per cell. There was minimal increase in carbohydrate per cell during the light period, yet all treatments displayed the classical buoyancy loss response.

Variations in the buoyancy response of Microcystis aeruginosa to nitrogen, phosphorus and light

Benthic, pelagic and littoral habitats are linked by physical processes in lakes. Exchanges between littoral and pelagic regions or between sheltered embayments and open waters can occur when horizontal density differences are generated. The resulting flows have been observed in tropical, subtropical, and temperate lakes as a result of differences in rates of heating due to morphometry or variations in algal abundance and differences in the depths of wind mixing. Laboratory experiments show that such circulations can also occur under beds of floating vegetation. These circulations may be significant for the movement of nutrients within lakes. Whereas mixing induced by wind is often invoked as a mechanism for vertical transport, the depth of penetration of wind-induced mixing may be suppressed if rates of heating are high when wind speeds are high. Vertical and horizontal transport in lakes: linking littoral, benthic, and pelagic habitats

We present observations of the diurnal formation of horizontal temperature gradients in the surface waters of a sidearm of a small water supply reservoir at a time during summer when radiative heating and vertical stratification of the reservoir’s waters were both quite strong. Our measurements show that because the closed end of the sidearm was relatively shallow, daytime heating and nighttime cooling created larger temperature changes there than in the body of the lake, resulting in large horizontal temperature gradients that drove strongly sheared, horizontal exchanges. Because of more vigorous turbulent mixing during cooling, cooling-driven flows were slower and of greater vertical extent than were heating-driven flows. The overall flow exhibited inertia in that it was not in phase with the daily heating cycle. Averaged over the daily cycle, there appeared to be a net residual flow, with surface waters flowing out and metalimnetic waters flowing in. This thermally driven flow, the “thermal siphon,” greatly enhanced the rate of horizontal exchange between the sidearm and the body of the reservoir such that the time required to replace water in the sidearm when the siphon is operating is substantially less than estimates with conventional formulae based on horizontal turbulent diffusion.

Convective motions in the sidearm of a small reservoir

Measurements of water‐surface elevation in a harbor were analyzed to determine the forcing mechanisms causing the excessive motion of moored ships. The spectral density of water‐surface elevation measured at four locations is presented by a time‐frequency distribution. A numerical model based on a modified mild slope equation approximation of wave refraction, diffraction, and reflection in and around the harbor was employed to simulate the transformation of waves entering the harbor. The performance of the model was validated against the field data by comparing predicted and observed wave heights at field measurement locations within the harbor; deviations of predicted ratios from those observed are discussed.
