A crucial prerequisite for building context-aware networks is an integrated infrastructure for sensing, processing, managing and disseminating network context information to network entities and user-facing applications. This requirement is especially important in ambient networks, a class of networks that exploit the inherent heterogeneity seen in today's wireless networks in order to share diverse resources and services across different but cooperating networks. We discuss ContextWare, our architectural solution for making ambient networks context-aware, and present a programmable approach to its realization. We relate some of our experiences in building and validating a prototype and demonstrating its support for network and service composition, as well as self-adaptation, using a reference scenario.

ContextWare support for network and service composition and self-adaptation

A system and method of communicating between a user receiving device, a user locator module and a partner service provider includes a gateway device having a port configured to communicate with a user receiving device. The user receiving device registers with the user device locator module through the port. The user device locator module determines the location of a user receiving device. The partner service provider and the user receiving device form a peer-to-peer connection in response to the location data.

The development and deployment of interconnected networks is being increasingly limited by their complexity and the concomitant cost of managing the operational network. Autonomic Communication aims to reduce this cost, by migrating management intelligence towards the network elements and empowering operational support staff to specify what network behaviour in terms of goals and constraints. Towards this aim we propose a key infrastructural service that enables the efficient delivery of network operations knowledge to, and only to, nodes that have expressed an interest in that knowledge. This Knowledge Delivery Service mediates operational network knowledge in an open, ontological form, thereby promoting the graceful evolution of network management applications from contemporary to fully autonomic. To cope with the inevitable heterogeneity of knowledge across the population of network nodes, the service provides a level of semantic interoperability that will be transparent to the nodes providing and consuming knowledge. The Service will be based on content-based networking principles. This paper describes work towards supporting semantic interoperability in such a Knowledge Delivery Service.

A system and method for communicating between a user device locator module and a user receiving device includes forming a secure connection with the user device locator module. The user receiving device communicates user identifier data and port data to the user device locator module. An authentication module authenticates the user data from the user device locator module and generates an authentication signal. The user device locator module registers the port data at the user device locator module in response to the authentication signal.

Network-centric context information is used to make networks more receptive to the users’ needs by personalizing the communication process and making it more sensitive to changes that may occur in the surroundings. As such, it is a natural step that context awareness should be suitably incorporated within traditional networks in order to create an ‘ambient network’. This approach is aimed at enabling the co-operation of heterogeneous networks on demand, transparently to the potential users, and without the need for preconfiguration or offline negotiation between network operators. This paper discusses the approach taken by authors to incorporate context-awareness into ambient networking concepts. It discusses how network-related context information should be utilized in ambient networks for the end user to fully experience the pervasiveness of a network and the research challenges arising from this utilization. The paper also evaluates the benefits of employing context information and contextware concepts in ambient networks.

Contextware Research Challenges in Ambient Networks

From state of the art technologies for load balancing and reliability increase in VoIP infrastructures one learns that no homogenous solution exists. Thus compromises have been made as in the number of machines versus achieved reliability, or with regard to separation of load balancing and failure resilience. In this paper we present a distributed architecture for VoIP services based on peer-to-peer principles. In contrast to other peer-to-peer based approaches, relying upon an external DHT service, our architecture utilizes peer-to-peer technologies to integrate load balancing and failover requirements with a centralized VoIP server concept. This results in an integrated solution with focus on today's service provider requirements. Within the scope of this work, a proof-of-concept software solution has been designed and implemented. We show that the proposed architecture can be easily scaled up and provides efficient, redundant storage for user and session data
