Recently, organic fluorescent molecules harnessing the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process are drawing great attention due to their unique photophysical properties which facilitate novel optoelectronic applications. After a brief introduction to the ESIPT process and related photo-physical properties, molecular design strategies towards tailored emission are discussed in relation to their theoretical aspects. Subsequently, recent studies on advanced ESIPT molecules and their optoelectronic applications are surveyed, particularly focusing on chemical sensors, fluorescence imaging, proton transfer lasers, and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs).

Advanced Organic Optoelectronic Materials: Harnessing Excited-State Intramolecular Proton Transfer (ESIPT) Process

Solid state emitters based on excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) have been attracting considerable interest since the past few years in the field of optoelectronic devices because of their desirable unique photophysical properties. The photophysical properties of the solid state ESIPT fluorophores determine their possible applicability in functional materials. Less fluorescence quantum efficiencies and short fluorescence lifetime in the solid state are the shortcomings of the existing ESIPT solid state emitters. Designing of ESIPT chromophores with high fluorescence quantum efficiencies and a long fluorescence lifetime in the solid state is a challenging issue because of the unclear mechanism of the solid state emitters in the excited state. Reported design strategies, detailed photophysical properties, and their applications will help in assisting researchers to overcome existing challenges in designing novel solid state ESIPT fluorophores for promising applications. This review highlights recently developed solid state ESIPT emitters with focus on molecular design strategies and their photophysical properties, reported in the last five years.

Excited-state intramolecular proton transfer reactions are reviewed. Special emphasis is given to the intrinsic processes and to the mechanisms of proton transfers in relation to the nature of the intramolecular hydrogen bond ring.

Charge and proton transfer reactions in the excited states of organic dyes can be coupled in many different ways. Despite the complementarity of charges, they can occur on different time scales and in different directions of the molecular framework. In certain cases, excited-state equilibrium can be established between the charge-transfer and proton-transfer species. The interplay of these reactions can be modulated and even reversed by variations in dye molecular structures and changes of the surrounding media. With knowledge of the mechanisms of these processes, desired rates and directions can be achieved, and thus the multiple emission spectral features can be harnessed. These features have found versatile applications in a number of cutting-edge technological areas, particularly in fluorescence sensing and imaging.

Excited-state proton coupled charge transfer modulated by molecular structure and media polarization

White-light-emitting single molecules are promising materials for use in a new generation of displays and light sources because they offer the possibility of simple fabrication with perfect color reproducibility and stability. To realize white-light emission at the molecular scale, thereby eliminating the detrimental concentration- or environment-dependent energy transfer problem in conventional fluorescent or phosphorescent systems, energy transfer between a larger band-gap donor and a smaller band-gap acceptor must be fundamentally blocked. Here, we present the first example of a concentration-independent ultimate white-light-emitting molecule based on excited-state intramolecular proton transfer materials. Our molecule is composed of covalently linked blue- and orange-light-emitting moieties between which energy transfer is entirely frustrated, leading to the production of reproducible, stable white photo- and electroluminescence.

The phenomena of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (phototautomerization) are distinguished in molecular mechanism according to four classes. Intrinsic intramolecular proton transfer (e.g. 3-hydroxyflavone) involves ultra-rapid proton transfer across an internal H-bond. Concerted biprotonic transfer (e.g. 7-azaindole dimers and solvates, benzanilide dimers) involves cooperative double proton transfer in a cyclical complex. Static and dynamic catalysis of proton transfer (e.g. lumichrome, adenine, guanine) involves strong catalysis in doubly H-bonded acetic acid complexes, or a proton transport by H-bonded pyridine. Proton-relay transfer (e.g. 7-hydroxyquinoline, 3-hydroxyxanthone) is suggested as involving multiproton-bridged solvates, which may serve as experimental models for proton relays and proton pumps in biological systems.Potential functions for proton-transfer spectroscopy are discussed and the perturbations of these potentials by specific solvation and by spectroscopic solvent-cage effects are discussed on the basis of a Born–Oppenheimer spectroscopic solvent-cage model.
