The firewall comprises a simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP) relay (202) for causing the e-mail messages (204) to be transmitted between the first site and selected ones of the second sites. A plurality of policy managers (216) enforce administrator selectable policies. The policies, such as encryption and decryption policies, comprise at least a first source/destination policy (218), at least a first content policy (220) and at least a first virus policy (224). The policies are characterized by a plurality of administrator selectable criteria (310), a plurality of administrator selectable exceptions (312) to the criteria and a plurality of administrator selectable actions (314, 316, 322) associated with the criteria and exceptions. The policy managers comprise an access manager (218) for restricting transmission of e-mail messages (204) between the first site and the second sites in accordance with the source/destination policy (218). The policy managers (216) further comprise a content manager (220) for restricting transmission of e-mail messages (204) between the first site and the second sites in accordance with the content policy (220), and a virus manager (224) for restriction transmission of e-mail messages (204) between the first site and the second sites in accordance with the virus policy (224).

E-mail firewall with stored key encryption/decryption

A lightweight secure tunneling protocol or LSTP permits communicating across one or more firewalls by using a middle server or proxy. Three proxies are used to establish an end-to-end connection that navigates through the firewalls. In a typical configuration, a server is behind a first firewall and a client behind a second firewall are interconnected by an untrusted network (e.g., the Internet) between the firewalls. A first inside firewall SOCKS-aware server-side end proxy connects to the server inside the first firewall. A second inside firewall SOCKS-aware client-side end proxy is connected to by the client inside the second firewall. Both server-side and client-side end proxies can address a third proxy (called a middle proxy) outside the two firewalls. The middle proxy is usually started first, as the other two end proxies (server and client) will initiate the connection to the middle proxy some time after they are started. Since the middle proxy is mutually addressable by both inside proxies, a complete end-to-end connection between the server and client is established. It is the use of one or more middle proxies together with the LSTP that establishes the secure communications link or tunnel across multiple firewalls.

External servers are also used to retrieve data that is employed to encrypt and decrypt e-mail messages received and transmitted by the e-mail firewall, respectively.

A system and method is provided for detecting, tracking and blocking denial of service (“DoS”) attacks, which can occur between local computer systems and/or between remote computer systems, network links, and/or routing systems over a computer network. The system includes a collector adapted to receive a plurality of data statistics from the computer network and to process the plurality of data statistics to detect one or more data packet flow anomalies. The collector is further adapted to generate a plurality of signals representing the one or more data packet flow anomalies. The system further includes a controller that is coupled to the collector and is adapted to receive the plurality of signals from the collector. The controller is constructed and arranged to respond to the plurality of signals by tracking attributes related to the one or more data packet flow anomalies to at least one source, and to block the one or more data packet flow anomalies using a filtering mechanism executed in close proximity to the at least one source.
