An analyte monitor includes a sensor, a sensor control unit, and a display unit. The sensor has, for example, a substrate, a recessed channel formed in the substrate, and conductive material disposed in the recessed channel to form a working electrode. The sensor control unit typically has a housing adapted for placement on skin and is adapted to receive a portion of an electrochemical sensor. The sensor control unit also includes two or more conductive contacts disposed on the housing and configured for coupling to two or more contact pads on the sensor. A transmitter is disposed in the housing and coupled to the plurality of conductive contacts for transmitting data obtained using the sensor. The display unit has a receiver for receiving data transmitted by the transmitter of the sensor control unit and a display coupled to the receiver for displaying an indication of a level of an analyte. The analyte monitor may also be part of a drug delivery system to alter the level of the analyte based on the data obtained using the sensor.

The method and apparatus are particularly suitable for the measurement of glucose levels in blood without requiring separation of red blood cells from serum or plasma.

A processor converts the electrical signal to a digital output. A starter automatically activates the processor and detector upon the application of the sample (72) to the device (60). A display (270) visually displays the digital output external to the housing (62) and is connected to the processor. The present invention also provides a method for determining the presence of one or more selected analytes in a sample (72) within a disposable housing (62), automatically starting a diagnostic device (60) to analyze a sample (72), and displaying quantitative assay results for a plurality of selected analytes in a sample on a diagnostic device (60).

The method comprises the steps of transmitting to each instrument (10) an attention protocol for advising each instrument (10) that a further instruction is to be transmitted, transmitting one of a global address to all of such instruments (10) and an address unique to one of such instruments (10), and transmitting an instruction to all of the instruments (10) or to the above-mentioned one instrument (10).

A title provided on the instrument provides a first remission when no strip is inserted into the instrument. The tile is separated from the radiation source by the strip when the strip is inserted into the instrument. The first remission and the strip's remission, respectively, indicate the absence and the presence of the strip in the instrument. The strip also has a surface opposite the chemistry supporting surface characterized by a second strip remission different from the first strip remission. The instrument is capable of determining whether the strip has been inserted into the instrument correctly or backward.

The housing (120) is separated from the radiation source (264) by the strip (106) when the strip (106) is inserted into the device (10). The first remission and the strip's (106) remission indicate the absence and the presence, respectively, of the strip (106) in the device (10).
