The command definition can also include, for example, service object commands to release service objects, notify when handling of an event is complete, invoke commands, release work items, suspend work items, resume work items, handle queued events, and cancel queued events. The command definition can also include, for example, client object commands to start a work item, release work items, save work item contexts, restore work item contexts, serialize work items, free work item storage, begin batch processing, and end batch processing.

When a client program requests a resolution of a host name, the GSLB switch, acting as a proxy of an authoritative DNS, returns one or more ordered IP addresses for the host name. The IP addresses are ordered using metrics that include the information collected from the site switches. In one instance, the GSLB switch places the address that is deemed “best” at the top of the list.

A list of dynamic VIPAs is distributed among the protocol stacks and a hierarchy of backup communication protocol stacks for the dynamic VIPAs is determined based on the list of dynamic VIPAs. Upon receiving notification of failure of the first stack the second stack evaluates the hierarchy of backup stacks to determine if it is the next stack in the hierarchy for the VIPA associated with the first application instance. If so, then the VIPA associated with the first application instance is transferred to the second communication protocol stack associated with the second application instance.

Conformity of physical equipment configurations with the logical console control and fallback plan is verified by sending messages through the backup paths and testing message response. The method of resource server or logical console fallback to a backup resource server or logical console includes the steps of verifying operational status of each physical component defined by the logical configuration description to assure availability. Tests can be manually or automatically generated. If all tests are completed successfully, resource server or console fallback is initiated.

A partitioned processing system is disclosed wherein a common security server is run in a first partition and at least one server client is run in at least one other partition, each partition having a shared memory or memory-to-memory connection to said first partition, which enables security client server communication with the common security server. The partitioned processing system additionally has a main storage having a first portion accessible by the first partition and a second portion accessible by the second partition. Also included is a mechanism connected to the security client for sending a request for authorization by a user to the security client. A first transmitter in the security client sends the request for authorization from the security client to the common security server by way of said main storage. A second transmitter in the common security server sends a response to the request for authorization from the common security server to the security client by way of said main storage. A third transmitter in the security client then sends the response from the security client to the user.
