Psychological symptoms and nonfatal unintentional injuries among Chinese adolescents: a prospective study.

Objectives. We described nonfatal injuries and calculated injury rates among middle-school and high-school students in Guangxi, China.Methods. Students were selected using multistage randomizing techniques, and nonfatal injuries in 1840 students from February 2002 to January 2003 were monitored with standardized injury forms. Risk factors for injury were identified in multivariate analyses.Results. The annual overall injury rate was 32.3 per 100 students. Boys had a significantly higher injury rate than the girls (34.8 vs 30.3 per 100 students), and a significantly higher proportion of injuries in boys was caused by other students (28.1% vs 19.4%). A higher proportion of injuries in girls (40.7%) occurred at home. For both boys and girls, sports were the most common activities associated with injury. Nonfatal injuries among middle-school and high-school students in Guangxi, China

This study assessed the role of certain individual characteristics in school injury among male and female adolescents. The sample included 2,398 subjects attending middle schools and high schools. Respondents completed a self-administered questionnaire at the beginning of the school year. School nurse completed a questionnaire on injury for each school injury occurred during the school year. The data was analyzed with the adjusted odds ratios (ORa) computed via the logistic models. The school injury was common (13% for both sexes). Sports/physical training injury was more frequent among girls (8.8% vs. 6.6%, P < 0.05) contrarily to the other types of injury (4.6% vs. 8.8%, P = 0.001). Sports/physical training injury was strongly associated with age <15 years (ORa 3.42) and presence of previous injury (2.63) among boys, and with age <15 years (2.02), presence of previous injury (2.94), not easily irritated (1.89), and irresponsible (1.59) among girls. The other types of injury were highly related to age <15 years (ORa 4.18), frequent use of psychotropic drugs (1.76), not living with both parents (1.65), being not calm (2.03), and presence of previous injury (1.82) among boys, and to age <15 years (2.59), obesity (3.24), and being not calm (1.84) among girls. The present study identified a number of potential risk factors for school injury among male and female adolescents. Preventive measures should be taken to make adolescents, their parents and teachers more aware of the risks and to find remedial measures.

School injury and gender differentials: a prospective cohort study

This book is the direct descendent of The Handbook of Balance Function Testing (published in 1993) and The Practical Management of the Balance Disordered Patient (published in 1996), by the same authors. It is divided into 27 chapters and a DVD. The text begins with introductory material covering the anatomy and physiology of the vestibular apparatus and eye movements, symptoms, and the methods for recording eye movement. Tests that assess the vestibular system are described in the following chapters. This information is generally organised so that the technique for performing the test is followed by a section covering interpretation of results. The last section covers the medical and surgical treatment of dizziness, with added chapters on vestibular sensory evoked potentials and the assessment of falls risk. The book is six hundred and thirty odd pages, but is a relatively easy read. The DVD that accompanies each chapter is excellent and explains the practical points covered. The only downside to the book is that the investigation algorithms are biased towards the ones preferred by the authors; a more balanced overview could have been achieved. However, this is a minor point. All in all, this is an excellent book, to be used as a reference text for ENT surgeons, trainees and audiological physicians.

Critical review of literature revealed that, risk assessment and management in educational field is commonly discussed in the literature of outdoor education. This is because being surrounded with higher risks is one of the natures of its implementation and features that distinguished outdoor education from indoor learning. Nonetheless, safety issues during the learning process, particularly, in other subjects have received relatively less attention. This paper aims to examine other learning conditions that may involve risks or safety issues that is relevant in the teaching and learning of all subjects regardless whether the learning takes place outdoor or indoor. In this paper, we suggest that risk may occur everywhere, indoor and outdoor, and risk assessment and management should be carried out by all educators regardless the approach and the venue of learning. Following this suggestion, further implication of this paper is a suggestion to develop new curriculum on risk assessment and management for all fields in teacher training programmes.

Risk assessment and management in Malaysian teacher training programmes

Objectives: School injuries are a serious public health problem, yet classroom injuries have received little attention. The purpose of this study was to describe the epidemiology of classroom injuries in Utah public schools. Methods: Utah statewide school injury data on kindergarten through 12th grade students for 1996 through 1998 were used. The data were generated from a standardized Student Injury Report (SIR) form completed by school personnel for injuries that (1) caused loss of at least one half of a day of school or (2) warranted medical attention and treatment. Injuries occurring in laboratories, shop, and physical education classes were excluded. To determine the medical outcome and charges associated with classroom injuries, the authors probabilistically linked the SIR database to Utah statewide emergency department (ED) records and Utah statewide hospital inpatients discharge records for 1996 through 1998. Results: During the period 1996 through 1998, there were 1,366 classroom injuries. Nearly two thirds of the injuries occurred to male students. More than half the classroom injuries were related to equipment use. Weapon use was rare. Twenty percent of students injured in the classroom obtained treatment in an ED, where 71% of these injuries were determined to involve the head, neck, and upper extremity. Two incidents, one involving carbon monoxide and the other tear gas, accounted for 11% of the ED admissions. Conclusions: Classroom injuries are not sufficiently frequent, severe, or costly to justify special studies focused solely on acute injuries in standard classrooms. This does not negate the need for continued surveillance of classroom injuries along with other school injuries.
