An intelligent automated assistant system engages with the user in an integrated, conversational manner using natural language dialog, and invokes external services when appropriate to obtain information or perform various actions. The system can be implemented using any of a number of different platforms, such as the web, email, smartphone, and the like, or any combination thereof. In one embodiment, the system is based on sets of interrelated domains and tasks, and employs additional functionally powered by external services with which the system can interact.

A concept-based indexing and search system indexes collections of documents with ontology-based predicate structures through automated and/or human-assisted methods. The system extracts the concepts behind user queries to return only those documents that match those concepts. The concept based search and retrieval system comprehends the intent behind a query from a user, and returns results matching that intent. The system can perform off-line searches for unanswered user queries and notify the user when a match is found.

A data transmission system is disclosed which optimizes transfer and updates of information between systems by providing difference information between the systems. The system transmits data packages having instructions for manipulating user data. The data packages include a header identifying the respective packages, as well as transaction objects for effecting a change to user data on a device having object instructions.

Data transfer and synchronization system

A virtual assistant uses context information to supplement natural language or gestural input from a user. Context helps to clarify the user's intent and to reduce the number of candidate interpretations of the user's input, and reduces the need for the user to provide excessive clarification input. Context can include any available information that is usable by the assistant to supplement explicit user input to constrain an information-processing problem and/or to personalize results. Context can be used to constrain solutions during various phases of processing, including, for example, speech recognition, natural language processing, task flow processing, and dialog generation.

Using context information to facilitate processing of commands in a virtual assistant

The present invention interprets natural language input using common sense reasoning. The invention avoids the combinatorial explosion that has occurred in other natural language understanding systems. The invention uses modules for parsing, disambiguation, formal semantics, anaphora resolution, and coherence, and a naive semantic lexicon. The naive semantic lexicon is consulted by the parsing, disambiguation, formal semantics, anaphora resolution, and coherence modules to determine whether an interpretation alternative is plausible based on the world knowledge contained in the naive semantic lexicon. The parsing module employs both a top-down and bottom-up parsing strategy. The parsing module consults the naive semantic lexicon to build a structure from natural language input that has both semantic and pragmatic plausibility. The invention uses a psychologically-motivated naive semantic ontology that provides a means for classifying concepts. The lexicon relates word senses to the ontological concepts, contains word sense-specific common sense knowledge, and connects syntactic information with the meaning of each word sense. Using the natural language understanding of the present invention, a process is used for retrieving text that includes the steps of: 1) natural language understanding of a document base, 2) natural language understanding of a text retrieval request (i.e., query), 3) a comparison of the output of steps 1 and 2.

An improved natural language text parser is disclosed which provides syntactic analysis of text using a fast and compact technique. Sequential steps of word isolation (20), morphological analysis (22, 26) and dictionary look-up (24) combined with a complement grammar analysis (28), are applied to an input data stream of words. Word expert rules (30), verb group analysis (32) and clause analysis (34-42) are then applied to provide an output data structure where the words in the input data stream are associated with their respective parts of speech and are grouped with appropriate phrase markings. The principle of operation of the parser is applicable to a variety of Indo-European languages and provides a faster and more compact technique for parsing in a data processor than has been available in the prior art.
