A review of content-based image retrieval systems in medical applications—clinical benefits and future directions

Retrieving images from large and varied collections using image content as a key is a challenging and important problem We present a new image representation that provides a transformation from the raw pixel data to a small set of image regions that are coherent in color and texture This "Blobworld" representation is created by clustering pixels in a joint color-texture-position feature space The segmentation algorithm is fully automatic and has been run on a collection of 10,000 natural images We describe a system that uses the Blobworld representation to retrieve images from this collection An important aspect of the system is that the user is allowed to view the internal representation of the submitted image and the query results Similar systems do not offer the user this view into the workings of the system; consequently, query results from these systems can be inexplicable, despite the availability of knobs for adjusting the similarity metrics By finding image regions that roughly correspond to objects, we allow querying at the level of objects rather than global image properties We present results indicating that querying for images using Blobworld produces higher precision than does querying using color and texture histograms of the entire image in cases where the image contains distinctive objects

Pattern Recognition

Character recognition (CR) has been extensively studied in the last half century and has progressed to a level that is sufficient to produce technology-driven applications. Now, rapidly growing computational power is enabling the implementation of the present CR methodologies and is creating an increasing demand in many emerging application domains which require more advanced methodologies. This paper serves as a guide and update for readers working in the CR area. First, the historical evolution of CR systems is presented. Then, the available CR techniques, with their superiorities and weaknesses, are reviewed. Finally, the current status of CR is discussed and directions for future research are suggested. Special attention is given to off-line handwriting recognition, since this area requires more research in order to reach the ultimate goal of machine simulation of human reading.

This so-called "blobworld" representation is based on segmentation using the expectation-maximization algorithm on combined color and texture features. The texture features we use for the segmentation arise from a new approach to texture description and scale selection. We describe a system that uses the blobworld representation to retrieve images. An important and unique aspect of the system is that, in the context of similarity-based querying, the user is allowed to view the internal representation of the submitted image and the query results. Similar systems do not offer the user this view into the workings of the system; consequently, the outcome of many queries on these systems can be quite inexplicable, despite the availability of knobs for adjusting the similarity metric.

Color- and texture-based image segmentation using EM and its application to content-based image retrieval

CANDID (Comparison Algorithm for Navigating Digital Image Databases) was developed to enable content-based retrieval of digital imagery from large databases using a query-by-example methodology. A user provides an example image to the system, and images in the database that are similar to that example are retrieved. The development of CANDID was inspired by the N-gram approach to document fingerprinting, where a ``global signature`` is computed for every document in a database and these signatures are compared to one another to determine the similarity between any two documents. CANDID computes a global signature for every image in a database, where the signature is derived from various image features such as localized texture, shape, or color information. A distance between probability density functions of feature vectors is then used to compare signatures. In this paper, the authors present CANDID and highlight two results from their current research: subtracting a ``background`` signature from every signature in a database in an attempt to improve system performance when using inner-product similarity measures, and visualizing the contribution of individual pixels in the matching process. These ideas are applicable to any histogram-based comparison technique.

Query by image example: The CANDID approach

A system for automatically identifying the script used in a handwritten document image is described. The system was developed using a 496-document dataset representing six scripts, eight languages, and 279 writers. Documents were characterized by the mean, standard deviation, and skew of five connected component features. A linear discriminant analysis was used to classify new documents, and tested using writer-sensitive cross-validation. Classification accuracy averaged 88% across the six scripts. The same method, applied within the Roman subcorpus, discriminated English and German documents with 85% accuracy.

The basic spatial frequency composition of the degradation is determined from an easily computed one-dimensional power spectrum of the image. A convolutional restoration kernel is then created from a modified version of the power spectrum.

Document images in which different scripts, such as Chinese and Roman, appear on a single page pose a problem for optical character recognition (OCR) systems. This paper explores the use of script identification vectors in the analysis of multilingual document images. A script identification vector is calculated for each connected component in a document. The vector expresses the closest distance between the component and templates developed for each of thirteen scripts, including Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic, and Roman. The authors calculate the first three principal components within the resulting thirteen-dimensional space for each image. By mapping these components to red, green, and blue, they can visualize the information contained in the script identification vectors. The visualization of several multilingual images suggests that the script identification vectors can be used to segment images into script-specific regions as large as several paragraphs or as small as a few characters. The visualized vectors also reveal distinctions within scripts, such as font in Roman documents, and kanji vs. kana in Japanese. Results are best for documents containing highly dissimilar scripts such as Roman and Japanese. Documents containing similar scripts, such as Roman and Cyrillic will require further investigation.
