The optics of correlated disordered media is a fascinating research topic emerging at the interface between the physics of waves in complex media and nanophotonics. Inspired by photonic structures in nature and enabled by advances in nanofabrication processes, recent investigations have unveiled how the design of structural correlations down to the subwavelength scale could be exploited to control the scattering, transport and localization of light in matter. From optical transparency to superdiffusive light transport to photonic gaps, the optics of correlated disordered media challenges our physical intuition and offers new perspectives for applications. This article reviews the theoretical foundations, state-of-the-art experimental techniques and major achievements in the study of light interaction with correlated disorder, covering a wide range of systems -- from short-range correlated photonic liquids, to Levy glasses containing fractal heterogeneities, to hyperuniform disordered photonic materials. The mechanisms underlying light scattering and transport phenomena are elucidated on the basis of rigorous theoretical arguments. We overview the exciting ongoing research on mesoscopic phenomena, such as transport phase transitions and speckle statistics, and the current development of disorder engineering for applications such as light-energy management and visual appearance design. Special efforts are finally made to identify the main theoretical and experimental challenges to address in the near future.

Light in correlated disordered media

Inspired by structural colors in avian species, various synthetic strategies have been developed to produce noniridescent, saturated colors using nanoparticle assemblies. Nanoparticle mixtures varying in particle chemistry and size have additional emergent properties that affect the color produced. For complex multicomponent systems, understanding the assembled structure and a robust optical modeling tool can empower scientists to identify structure-color relationships and fabricate designer materials with tailored color. Here, we demonstrate how we can reconstruct the assembled structure from small-angle scattering measurements using the computational reverse-engineering analysis for scattering experiments method and use the reconstructed structure in finite-difference time-domain calculations to predict color. We successfully, quantitatively predict experimentally observed color in mixtures containing strongly absorbing nanoparticles and demonstrate the influence of a single layer of segregated nanoparticles on color produced. The versatile computational approach that we present is useful for engineering synthetic materials with desired colors without laborious trial-and-error experiments.

Mechanism of structural colors in binary mixtures of nanoparticle-based supraballs

Conductive hydrogels have attracted copious attention owing to their grateful performances, such as similarity to biological tissues, compliance, conductivity and biocompatibility. A diversity of conductive hydrogels have been developed and showed versatile potentials in biomedical applications. In this review, we highlight the recent advances in conductive hydrogels, involving the various types and functionalities of conductive hydrogels as well as their applications in biomedical fields. Furthermore, the current challenges and the reasonable outlook of conductive hydrogels are also given. It is expected that this review will provide potential guidance for the advancement of next‐generation conductive hydrogels.

Developing conductive hydrogels for biomedical applications

Low‐swelling polymers (LSPs) generally refer to materials with a low solvent absorption ratio or volume expansion rate at swelling equilibrium. LSPs with exceptional responsiveness could be upgraded to smart sensors with structural color self‐reporting by bridging photonic crystals (PCs). Based on the regulation of swelling to effective refractive index, lattice spacing, the order‐disorder arrangement of nanostructures, and incident/detection angle, the structural color feedback of smart photonic crystal sensors (SPCSs) can quantitatively and visually reveal the stimulus, which greatly promotes the interdisciplinary development of nanophotonic technology in the fields of chemical engineering, materials science, engineering mechanics, biomedicine, environmental engineering, etc. Herein, to clarify the role of the photonic structures and polymer molecules in high‐performance SPCSs, LSP‐based SPCSs are summarized and discussed, including general swelling mechanisms, color change strategies, structural design, and typical functional applications. It aims to figure out the combination rule between PC structures and LSPs, optimize the design of PC structures, and expound the corresponding structural color sensing mechanisms, inspiring the fabrication of next‐generation SPCSs. Finally, perspectives on future structural design and sensing applications are also presented. It is believed that SPCSs are multifunctional nanophotonic tools for the interdisciplinary development of numerous engineering fields in the future.

Recent progress in low‐swellable polymer‐based smart photonic crystal sensors

Abstract Hydrogels hold great promise in the field of flexible electronics. Attempts in this area tend to the microstructure design of hydrogels, giving them specific adhesion and multi‐sensing functions. Here, a novel phase separation‐derived anisotropic adhesive structural color hydrogel film is presented for visually flexible electronics. The hydrogel film is generated by template replicating colloidal crystal by using phase separation emulsions of hydrophilic monomer (acrylic acid, AA), hydrophobic monomer (lauryl methacrylate, LMA), co‐monomer ([2‐(methacryloyloxy) ethyl] dimethyl‐(3‐sulfopropyl) ammonium hydroxide (SBMA)), surfactants (hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, CTAB) and initiator (ammonium persulphate (APS)). The appearance of phase separation results in asymmetric morphologies of hydrogel film, imparting them with anisotropic adhesive performance. Attributed to the formation of inverse opal scaffold structure, the hydrogel film is featured with vivid structural color, showing superior capability in self‐reporting mechanical behavior. Additionally, benefitting from the presence of abundant ions, the hydrogel film exhibits great conductivity. Thus, the resultant hydrogel film is demonstrated with stable dual‐signal sensing properties involving color‐changing and conductivity feedback ability to respond to human activities. These features make the proposed anisotropic adhesive structural color hydrogel film highly potential in the flexible electronic field. 

Phase Separation Derived Anisotropic Adhesive Structural Color Hydrogel Films For Flexible Electronics

Photonic balls are spheres tens of micrometers in diameter containing assemblies of nanoparticles or nanopores with a spacing comparable to the wavelength of light. When these nanoscale features are disordered, but still correlated, the photonic balls can show structural color with low angle-dependence. Their colors, combined with the ability to add them to a liquid formulation, make photonic balls a promising new type of pigment particle for paints, coatings, and other applications. However, it is challenging to predict the color of materials made from photonic balls, because the sphere geometry and multiple scattering must be accounted for. To address these challenges, we develop a multiscale modeling approach involving Monte Carlo simulations of multiple 1 ar X iv :2 20 7. 03 03 3v 2 [ co nd -m at .s of t] 5 N ov 2 02 2 scattering at two different scales: we simulate multiple scattering and absorption within a photonic ball and then use the results to simulate multiple scattering and absorption in a film of photonic balls. After validating against experimental spectra, we use the model to show that films of photonic balls scatter light in fundamentally different ways than do homogeneous films of nanopores or nanoparticles, because of their increased surface area and refraction at the interfaces of the balls. Both effects tend to sharply reduce color saturation relative to a homogeneous nanostructured film. We show that saturated colors can be achieved by placing an absorber directly in the photonic balls and mitigating surface roughness. With these design rules, we show that photonic-ball films have an advantage over homogeneous nanostructured films: their colors are even less dependent on the angle.
