A plurality of computer nodes communicate using seemingly random Internet Protocol source and destination addresses. Data packets matching criteria defined by a moving window of valid addresses are accepted for further processing, while those that do not meet the criteria are quickly rejected. Improvements to the basic design include (1) a load balancer that distributes packets across different transmission paths according to transmission path quality; (2) a DNS proxy server that transparently creates a virtual private network in response to a domain name inquiry; (3) a large-to-small link bandwidth management feature that prevents denial-of-service attacks at system chokepoints; (4) a traffic limiter that regulates incoming packets by limiting the rate at which a transmitter can be synchronized with a receiver; and (5) a signaling synchronizer that allows a large number of nodes to communicate with a central node by partitioning the communication function between two separate entities.

Agile network protocol for secure communications with assured system availability

The smart management of freshwater for precision irrigation in agriculture is essential for increasing crop yield and decreasing costs, while contributing to environmental sustainability. The intense use of technologies offers a means for providing the exact amount of water needed by plants. The Internet of Things (IoT) is the natural choice for smart water management applications, even though the integration of different technologies required for making it work seamlessly in practice is still not fully accomplished. The SWAMP project develops an IoT-based smart water management platform for precision irrigation in agriculture with a hands-on approach based on four pilots in Brazil and Europe. This paper presents the SWAMP architecture, platform, and system deployments that highlight the replicability of the platform, and, as scalability is a major concern for IoT applications, it includes a performance analysis of FIWARE components used in the Platform. Results show that it is able to provide adequate performance for the SWAMP pilots, but requires specially designed configurations and the re-engineering of some components to provide higher scalability using less computational resources.

A secure domain name service for a computer network is disclosed that includes a portal connected to a computer network, such as the Internet, and a domain name database connected to the computer network through the portal. The portal authenticates a query for a secure computer network address, and the domain name database stores secure computer network addresses for the computer network. Each secure computer network address is based on a non-standard top-level domain name, such as .scom, .sorg, .snet, .snet, .sedu, .smil and .sint.

A technique is disclosed for establishing a secure communication link between a first computer and a second computer over a computer network. Initially, a secure communication mode of communication is enabled at a first computer without a user entering any cryptographic information for establishing the secure communication mode of communication. Then, a secure communication link is established between the first computer and a second computer over a computer network based on the enabled secure communication mode of communication. The secure communication link is a virtual private network communication link over the computer network in which one or more data values that vary according to a pseudo-random sequence are inserted into each data packet.

As the complexity of Internet of Things (IoT) systems increases, a large variety of tools and technologies for IoT management are making their way into both research setups and the market. IoT management solutions must consider the resource restrictions of embedded devices, as well as their heterogeneity and network dynamics. With these in mind, the Internet Engineering Task Force developed several standards targeting the integration and interoperation of heterogeneous devices, such as the Representational State Transfer Configuration Protocol (RESTCONF) or the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) Management Interface. Concurrently, the Open Mobile Alliance developed the Lightweight Machine-to-Machine protocol, for IoT device management. This paper provides a comprehensive, up-to-date overview of IoT management technologies, frameworks and protocols. Also, it proposes a taxonomy for IoT devices management. In addition to presenting the various solutions, the paper provides comparative views, standardization timeline, and market analysis. The presented analysis ranges from traditional network management protocols, such as Simple Network Management Protocol, to the newest IoT management and configuration protocols, such as CoAP Management Interface and Lightweight Machine-to-Machine protocols. Moreover, this survey identifies remaining challenges and solutions offered by recent management protocols, not covered by previous surveys.

Service-oriented architecture (SOA) is being touted as the technology of choice for next-generation service delivery platforms for converged services. Web services concepts and technologies, initially developed in the information technology realm as a solution in the Internet world for business-to-business and consumer-to-business services, have recently been leveraged to streamline enterprise internal process interactions. Web services now approach the traditional world of telecommunication networks at a time when that world in turn is trying to revolutionize itself through next-generation standards and architectures. Apparatus and methods of delivering electronic messages, such as e-mail, which provide e-mail users with additional control over the delivery process. A sending delay timer is incorporated into e-mail products, such as e-mail client and server software. Instead of trying to catch a message after it has been sent, the present invention controls the time an outgoing message is to leave the sending e-mail client and/or server, thereby allowing the message to be retrieved for modification or deletion without relying on ineffective recall features of conventional products. A single timer may be implemented, in which case all messages would be subjected to the same delay. Alternatively, multiple timers can also be implemented, wherein the timers can be individually set to delay messages meeting certain criteria, such as the intended recipient. During the effective delayed transmission time interval, since the message is still under the control of the e-mail software client, all local operations on the message can still be performed: i.e. the message can be viewed, edited, or deleted altogether. At the expiration of the time delay interval, the last rendition of the message (if one still exists in the sender's outbound e-mailbox) would be finally sent to the target recipient's e-mail address indicated. This feature does not interfere with any other pre-existing “recall” mechanisms, which can still be exercised as desired.

The Open Mobile Alliance: Delivering Service Enablers for Next-Generation Applications

This paper presents an overview of the service and network management architecture of Lucent Technologies' CyberCarrier Solution. Businesses of all sizes and from all sectors are choosing to outsource large portions of their information technology (IT) operations to Internet-based data centers that host application service providers (ASPs). Many network service providers (NSPs) have decided to become CyberCarrier service providers (CCSPs) — that is, they have decided to expand their businesses to include ASP data center hosting services. Managing these new ASP data center hosting services is one of the most urgent challenges encountered by a CCSP, and its solution is arguably critical to a CCSP's long-term success. Although introducing ASP data center hosting services increases and diversifies a CCSP's revenue, it also significantly complicates the CCSP's management processes. This paper defines an abstract management functional architecture that divides the CCSP management problem into tractable pieces and addresses each of them. Then it explains how the CyberCarrier Solution maps onto that functional architecture. Finally, it explores how Lucent will evolve its CyberCarrier Solution through future management system innovations.
