Techniques are disclosed for generating and managing presentities in accordance with a virtual presence server. By way of example, a method for requesting information from at least one server comprises the following steps. A client request, which expresses a request that can not be satisfied by a single existing presentity, is obtained at an intermediate server, wherein the intermediate server operates as a virtual presence server. The virtual presence server (i.e., intermediate server) creates a set of software objects for a virtual presentity, the set of objects embodying logic to combine presence information from one or more of existing presentities and external information sources, in accordance with at least one existing presence server. The virtual presence server creates an association between the request of the client and the created virtual presentity that allows the presence information to be propagated back to the client.

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) offer a convenient basis towards pervasive computing, due to inherent support for anytime, anywhere network access for mobile users. However, the development of applications over MANET still raises numerous challenges. One such challenge relates to accommodating the high dynamics of the network’s topology. Group management appears as a promising paradigm to ease the development of distributed applications over dynamic, mobile networks. Specifically, group management takes care of assembling mobile nodes that together allow to meet target functional and nonfunctional properties, and of further making transparent failures due to the mobility of nodes. Various solutions towards group management over MANET have been investigated over the last couple of years, each targeting specific applications. Building upon such an effort, this paper introduces the design and implementation of a group service for MANET, which is generic with respect to the various attributes of relevance. Generic group management allows supporting various applications, as illustrated through groups dedicated to mobile collaborative data sharing.

Techniques for selecting a new compression technique or altering the currently instantiated compression technique employed over a data stream in data collection system are provided. At least one change to at least one external contextual condition is detected. One or more modifications to a defined compression technique is generated, either independently or in conjunction with one or more modifications to the event processing operators that operate on the data stream and whose output provides the values that are compressed by the defined compression technique, in response to the at least one change to the at least one external contextual condition. The defined compression technique of the at least one client device is altered in accordance with the one or more modifications to form a modified compression technique through which the unmodified or processed data stream will be compressed before being sent to the server.

Adapting compression techniques over data based on context

Typical collaborations are composed of multiple interactions between people, who may participate from different geographical locations, and may use different devices, modalities and services. For mobile enterprise users, the availability of complete collaboration context, i.e. collaboration information with correlation between artifacts (data and services), at all times, whether they are online or offline, is essential for real-time response to business needs. Available collaboration solutions do not allow complete automatic creation of such contexts. In addition, solutions that support offline access to such context use a local replica of the server on the client, which is cumbersome and is not feasible for all types of mobile devices. The paper proposes a light-weight, portable format for representing collaboration contexts, and enabling offline access to them using disparate devices, without using any local server. It also proposes a conceptual system that uses information, represented in this format, to activate collaborations from any device

Portable enterprise collaboration contexts

The goal of this research was to create a decentralized trust-based access control (TBAC) system for a dynamic collaborative environment (DCE). By building a privilege management infrastructure (PMI) based on trust, user access was determined using behavior grading without the need for pre-configured, centrally managed role hierarchies or permission sets. The PMI provided TBAC suitable for deployment in a rapidly assembled, highly fluid, collaborative environment. 
DCEs were assembled and changed membership as required to achieve the goals of the group. A feature of these environments was that there was no way of knowing who would join the group, no way refusing anyone entry into the and no way of determining how long members would remain in the group. DCEs were formed quickly to enable participants to share information while, at the same time, allowing them to retain control over the resources that they brought with them to the coalition. 
This research progressed the state of the art in the fields of access control and trust management. The Trust Management System developed through this research effectively implemented a decentralized access control scheme. Each resource owner independently evaluated the reputation and risk of network members to make access decisions. Because the PMI system used past behavior as an indication of future performance, no a priori user or resource configuration was required.

The traditional idea of the work environment is anchored to a central location - the desk and office - where the resources needed for the job are located. Even in the many professions where the practitioners move among different field locations, such as professional consulting, health care, or resource exploration, the full set of information and technology resources has been available only in fixed locations where the workers "check in" periodically to integrate their field results back into the larger picture.
