The notion of embodiment is central to the phenomenological approach to schizophrenia. This paper argues that fundamental concepts for the understanding of schizophrenia have a bodily dimension. We present 2 single cases of first-onset schizophrenic patients and analyze the reports of their experiences. Problems such as loss of self, loss of common sense, and intentionality disorders reveal a disconnectedness that can be traced back to a detachment from the lived body. Hyperreflectivity and hyperautomaticity are used as coping mechanisms, but reflect the same problem of the split between body and mind. It is argued that the sole focus on cognitive impairments leads to a distorted image of schizophrenia, and that the acknowledgment of its fundamental bodily roots enables one to see the coherence between the diverse symptoms. As for the practical implications of the phenomenological approach, further research is needed to investigate if and how body- and movement-oriented therapies might strengthen the embodiment of schizophrenic patients.

The ghost in the machine: disembodiment in schizophrenia--two case studies.

The research examined the hypothesis that schizophrenia spectrum disorders are characterized by impairments in Gestalt perception. Participants with elevated levels of schizotypy, acute and chronic schizophrenia patients, and non-schizophrenia psychotic disorders were assessed on three measures of Gestalt perception. The hypothesis was that schizophrenia spectrum disorders are characterized by reduced responsiveness to Gestalt properties of visual stimuli. A pattern of performance on experimental tasks was predicted that would produce both impaired and enhanced task performance in schizophrenia spectrum disorders on measures of Gestalt perception. Impairments in Gestalt perception were hypothesized to correlate with symptoms of the disorganisation syndrome and with a specific aspect of social cognition, Theory of Mind (ToM), in schizophrenia spectrum disorders. The results of the research confirmed the main hypotheses. Schizophrenia spectrum disorders displayed in all studies reduced responsiveness to Gestalt properties of stimuli. Dysfunctional Gestalt perception emerged not as general feature of schizophrenia spectrums disorders, however. Cognitive deficits were specifically related to the disorganisation syndrome and statistical comparisons between participants with elevated and reduced levels of thought disorder found that dysfunctional Gestalt perception was only present in thought disordered participants with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Dysfunctional Gestalt perception resulted consistently in both impaired and enhanced task performance in disorganised forms of schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Phenomenological Psychopathology understands delusion as the result of changes in the aprioristic structure of consciousness. In this article, we will review the main contributions that classical and contemporary phenomenological authors have made to the theme. Departing from these psychopathological syntheses, we will discuss the structural genesis of this phenomenon, the possible evolutionary consequences of the delusional state, and its general meaning within the ontological framework of consciousness. At the same time that the analytical depth of the contributions restated here comprises the best of what has been done within the phenomenological approach, the reality is that extensive areas remain uncharted, especially when regarding the clinical consequence of these insights for clinical practice. Thus, as notes of a preliminary nature, we will make observations about the therapeutic implications of previous phenomenological findings. Among them, we shall emphasize the importance of the aprioristic sphere of consciousness in the design of a pharmacological and psychotherapeutic approach to schizophrenia worthy of the psychopathological tradition to which this contribution is affiliated.

Common Sense High Reliability Organizing (HRO) in the Response to COVID-19

The philosopher Max Scheler (1874-1928) set out a hierarchical theory of values and emotions in the early twentieth century. This inspired Kurt Schneider to distinguish two sorts of depressive illness, each conforming to a Storung (disorder) in different levels of Scheler's hierarchy. No other psychopathologist, except Stanghellini, gave the matter much attention. I believe that Scheler's theory is a rich source of insight into psychopathology, general and neuropsychiatric. I therefore give an account of Scheler's scheme, review its extant applications (Schneider's, Stanghellini's), and present suggestions as to its continuing potential relevance in a wide range of psychopathological conditions.
