Surfaces are often characterized by their points of zero charge (PZC) and isoelectric points (IEP). Different authors use these terms for different quantities, which may be equal to the actual PZC under certain conditions. Several popular methods lead to results which are inappropriately termed PZC. This present review is limited to zero-points obtained in the presence of inert electrolytes (halides, nitrates, and perchlorates of the 1st group metals). IEP are reported for all kinds of materials. PZC of metal oxides obtained as common intersection points of potentiometric curves for 3 or more ionic strengths (or by means of equivalent methods) are also reported, while the apparent PZC obtained by mass titration, pH-drift method, etc. are deliberately neglected. The results published in the recent publications and older results overlooked in the previous compilations by the same author are reported. The PZC/IEP are accompanied by information on the temperature and on the nature and concentration of supporting electrolyte (if available). The references to previous reviews by the same author allow to compare the newest results with the PZC/IEP of similar materials from the older literature.

Polyelectrolyte multilayers are nanofilms with vast applications in numerous areas such as medicine and food industry. Recently, they have been getting a lot of attention as potential food coatings for the prevention of fruit decay during transportation and storage, and therefore the coatings need to be biocompatible. In this study, we fabricated thin films made of biocompatible polyelectrolytes, positively charged polysaccharide chitosan, and negatively charged carboxymethyl cellulose on a model silica surface. Typically, to enhance the properties of the prepared nanofilms, the first layer (precursor layer) of poly(ethyleneimine) is used. However, for the construction of completely biocompatible coatings, this could be problematic due to potential toxicity. This study offers an option for a viable candidate as a replacement precursor layer: chitosan itself was adsorbed from a more concentrated solution. In the case of chitosan/carboxymethyl cellulose films, using chitosan over poly(ethyleneimine) as a precursor layer has shown a twofold increase in film thickness, as well as an increase in film roughness. In addition, these properties can be tuned by the presence of a biocompatible background salt (e.g., sodium chloride) in the deposition solution that has proven to change the film thickness and surface roughness depending on the salt concentration. Such a straightforward way of tuning the properties of these films combined with their biocompatibility makes this precursor material a prime candidate for use as a potential food coating.

Synthetic versus Natural Precursor Layer: A Study on the Properties of Biocompatible Chitosan/Carboxymethyl Cellulose Nanofilms

Abstract Wetting of cellulose by different liquids is interesting from the point of view of the processing of cellulose-based nanomaterials. Here, the contact angles formed by water and several organic liquids on both native and acetylated cellulose were calculated from molecular dynamics simulations. It was found that liquid surface tension was crucial for their wetting behavior. Acetylation decreases the work of adhesion to most liquids investigated, even non-polar ones, while others are not affected. Water has the highest affinity to cellulose, both native and acetylated. The results have implications for liquid infiltration of nanocellulose networks and the interaction of cellulose with different liquids in general.

Layer-by-layer adsorption allows the creation of versatile functional coatings for ion exchange membranes, but the stability of the coating and resulting properties of modified membranes in their operation is a frequently asked question. This paper examines the changes in voltammetric curves of layer-by-layer coated cation exchange membranes and pH-metry of desalination chamber with a studied membrane and an auxiliary anion exchange membrane after short-term tests, including over-limiting current modes. The practical operation of the membranes did not affect the voltammetric curves, but enhanced the generation of H+ and OH− ions in a system with polyethylenimine modified membrane in Ca2+ containing solution. It is shown that a distinction between the voltammetric curves of the membranes modified and the different polyamines persists during the operation and that, in the case of polyethylenimine, there is an additional zone of growth of potential drop in voltammetric curves and stronger generation of H+ and OH− ions as indicated by pH-metry.

Short-Term Stability of Electrochemical Properties of Layer-by-Layer Coated Heterogeneous Ion Exchange Membranes

Polyelectrolyte multilayers are coatings formed by the alternate deposition of polycations and polyanions on a charged surface. In this study we examined how the type of substrate affects a multilayer prepared from poly(allylamine hydrochloride) and poly(acrylic acid). Silicon and titanium wafers were used as substrates. Their properties were systematically studied using ellipsometry, tensiometry, atomic force microscopy and streaming potential measurements. Multilayers were built up at pH = 7 with tetramethylammonium chloride as the background salt. The growth of films was monitored by ellipsometry, while the morphology and surface roughness were determined by atomic force microscopy. It was found that the thickness of multilayers containing 10 layers on silicon is 10 nm, whereas the thickness of the same film on titanium is three times higher. It was shown that multilayers formed on silicon display a grain-like structure, which was not the case for a film formed on titanium. Such morphological properties are also reflected in the surface roughness. Finally, it was shown that, in addition to the electrostatic interactions, the hydrophobicity of the substrate also plays an important role in the polyelectrolyte multilayer formation process and influences its thickness and properties.
