A comparison of maternal fear of childbirth, labor pain intensity and intrapartum analgesic consumption between primiparas and multiparas: A cross-sectional study.

Background Epidural analgesia (EPA) is an effective anesthetic technique to overcome pain during labor. This study aimed to evaluate the current awareness of EPA among pregnant women. Methods We carried out a cross-sectional study using a questionnaire to measure awareness about EPA among pregnant women visiting the obstetrics and gynaecology clinic in King Abdulaziz Medical City in Jeddah. Following the results, a group of women was selected and educated by trained medical students. Results This study comprised 105 women. We found that 25 (23.8%) respondents revealed a complete lack of knowledge regarding EPA, 63 (60%) showed minimal awareness, and 17 (16.2%) were aware of EPA from various sources. The gravidity and history of EPA administration were significantly associated with knowledge. Multigravida women and those who had received EPA showed higher level of knowledge (p=0.048 and p < 0.001, respectively). In addition, there was a significant association between the level of education and request for EPA (p=0.027). Forty-one participants were enrolled in an educational program that explained the importance of EPA. Twenty (48.8%) women decided to undergo EPA during delivery; however, 7 (17.7%) refused and 14 (34.1%) were not sure about their decision. Conclusion This study revealed a lack of awareness about EPA among pregnant women. Educational programs were effective as many participants chose EPA following the educational session as a form of pain relief during labor. We recommend the implementation of routine education on EPA in vaginal delivery during antenatal visits for all pregnant women.

Awareness among Pregnant Women about Epidural Analgesia: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background: Labor pain is one of the most excruciatingly painful sensations a woman can have. A woman's attitude toward childbirth might be influenced by her lack of understanding of the birth process and the pain she experiences throughout labor and delivery. The control of pain is an important aspect of appropriate obstetrical care. Our study aims to measure the level of awareness, preconception, and fear of epidural analgesia (EDA) among childbearing women. Methods: An observational cross-sectional, hospital-based study was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire. The study included all pregnant women who were attending an obstetrical clinic for routine antenatal follow-up at King Khalid university hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, during the month of August 2022. They were asked about five main parts that tapped their awareness, preconception, and fear of EDA. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 26 using descriptive methods, including mean, frequency, and percentage, and also Pearson's correlation coefficient for regression analysis to find the correlation between socio-demographics and awareness and between awareness and fear. Results: Participants in our study included 202 childbearing women. Most women, about 113 (55.9%), participating in the study were aged between 25 and 34 years old. The majority of the participants of this study were Saudi, about 196 (97.0%). In terms of education, 120 (59.4%) of the participants graduated from university. One hundred and forty two (70.3%) of the participants had a monthly income of less than 10000. When it comes to parity, the majority of participants, about 102 (50.5%), have had more than two pregnancies. The average percentage of awareness among the participants showed 45.9%, with an insignificant very moderate correlation between parity and awareness (r = -0.088, P = 0.107); women's knowledge, income, and age were also insignificantly related to awareness. Also, the result showed a moderate level of fear with an average percentage of 44.6% among the participants, with a moderate correlation between awareness and fear with a value of (r = 0.184, P = 0.004). Conclusion: This study results demonstrate a good level of desirability toward using EDA for labor pain, yet there is a limited level of preconceptions and a low level of awareness and knowledge about EDA. In addition, the results showed that the average percentage of fear is 44.6%. Therefore, we suggest that more awareness, knowledge, and guidance about EDA should be provided to pregnant women through antenatal clinics. Furthermore, educational campaigns should be made to dispel misconceptions and fears about EDA.

Awareness, preconception, and fear of epidural analgesia among childbearing women in Saudi Arabia: An observational cross-sectional study


 Background: Cesarean section is an effective technique for preventing maternal and perinatal mortality when performed properly. Evidence suggested that pregnant women who have had good knowledge about their condition are able to participate in shared decision-making and can alleviate fears related to anesthesia. However, only a few studies conducted in Ethiopia assess the level of knowledge and attitude of pregnant women towards anesthesia for cesarean section.Methods: Hospital based cross-sectional study was conducted from April 18 to June 25, 2021. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select a total of 362 pregnant women attending antenatal care. Pretested and structured questionnaires were used to collect the data using a face-to-face interview. Both bivariate and multivariable binary logistic regression models were used for statistical analysis. The adjusted odds ratio was used as the measure of association. P-value less than 0.05 at 95% CI was considered as statistically significant.Results: A total of 354 pregnant women attending at ANC clinic participated with a response rate of 97.8%. The overall proportion of good knowledge and positive attitude towards anesthesia for cesarean section were 56.5% (95% CI: 51.4%, 61.9%) and 50.8% (95% CI: 45.8%, 56.2%), respectively. Pregnant women who had previous operations (AOR=4.47, 95% CI: 1.77, 11.32) and had any health information about anesthesia (AOR=10.06, 95% CI: 5.41, 18.69) were significantly associated with good knowledge towards anesthesia for cesarean section. While, pregnant women who have had secondary education (AOR=6.71, 95% CI: 1.19, 37.99), college and above education (AOR=13.63, 95% CI: 2.26, 82.21), and had health information about anesthesia (AOR=2.02, 95% CI: 1.09, 3.77) significantly associated with a positive attitude towards anesthesia for CS.Conclusion: This finding means that a significant number of pregnant women still have poor knowledge and attitude towards anesthesia for CS. Previous operation and health information about anesthesia were significantly associated with knowledge while higher education and health information about anesthesia were significantly associated with a positive attitude towards anesthesia for cesarean section. Health professionals need to provide health information during ANC visits and in the operating theater areas for mothers who have indications for CS.

Knowledge and attitude towards anesthesia for cesarean section and its associated factors among pregnant women attending Antenatal care

Abstract Background: One way to promote vaginal delivery and reduce unnecessary cesarean section, is by paying attention to labor pain relief techniques. The aim was to investigate knowledge, perceptions, and desire for pain relief in labor among Iranian pregnant women Methods: This descriptive study was conducted on 325 pregnant women who referred to prenatal clinics in 2020 and met the inclusion criteria. Data were collected using a researcher-made questionnaire on painless delivery. Data analysis was performed using SPSS v.21. Results: Most of the respondents (74%) were between 20-29 years old. 19.69% of participants were nulliparous and 62.76% had diplomas.72% were housewives. 56.61% of the participants had not enough information about pain relief in labor. Only 14 people of whom had information, (9.92%) desired to experience pain relief in labor. Many of the respondents 90.76% were worried about the effects of pain relief on their unborn. 44.68% of participants, who had information about pain relief in labor; got their information regarding pain relief in labor through Internet sources. Conclusions: Due to the low level of awareness of pregnant women to use painless delivery and labor pain relief techniques, it is recommended that the necessary measures be taken in order to increase women’s knowledge of the benefits and limitations of painless delivery. 

Knowledge, perception, and desire for pain relief in labor among Iranian pregnant women

Background: Labor pain is a severe form of agony that females experience while giving birth. A lot of pregnant women prefer epidural anesthesia (EA) to avoid labor pain. Objective: This study focuses on women's general awareness about EA during the childbearing age. Methods: A cross-sectional, hospital-based study was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire. The study included all females of childbearing age getting routine antenatal care. The survey was designed to measure their awareness toward EA. A total of 328 females participated in the study. Of these, 205 (62.5%) women showed a low level of knowledge toward EA. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test and Independent Samples t-test. Results: Participants in our study included 328 women of childbearing age. Most women (172 [52.4%]) participating in the study were aged between 30 and 40 years. In terms of education, 204 (62.2%) women had university-level education. Two hundred and ninety (88.4%) women were multipara. The majority of women (205 [62.5%]) had a low-level knowledge about EA with a significant relationship between the level of perception and primary education, as well as postgraduation with P < 0.023 and P < 0.001, respectively. Also, previous EA with pregnancy significantly related to the level of knowledge with P < 0.001. Through past pregnancies, 106 (32.3%) women had experience with EA. Of these, EA caused complications in only 13 (12.3%) women and side effects in 29 (27.4%) women. Conclusion: The majority of women of childbearing age had limited knowledge about the benefits and complications associated with EA. During the antenatal visit, it is essential to educate all women about EA. This could be done by the obstetrician, anesthesiologist, or midwives and/or through flyers and brochures.
