Salinity affects plant growth and is a major abiotic stress that limits crop productivity. It is well-understood that environmental adaptations and genetic traits regulate salinity tolerance in plants, but imparting the knowledge gained towards crop improvement remain arduous. Harnessing the potential of beneficial microorganisms present in the rhizosphere is an alternative strategy for improving plant stress tolerance. This review intends to elucidate the understanding of salinity tolerance mechanisms attributed by plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). Recent advances in molecular studies have yielded insights into the signaling networks of plant-microbe interactions that contribute to salt tolerance. The beneficial effects of PGPR involve boosting key physiological processes, including water and nutrient uptake, photosynthesis, and source-sink relationships that promote growth and development. The regulation of osmotic balance and ion homeostasis by PGPR are conducted through modulation of phytohormone status, gene expression, protein function, and metabolite synthesis in plants. As a result, improved antioxidant activity, osmolyte accumulation, proton transport machinery, salt compartmentalization, and nutrient status reduce osmotic stress and ion toxicity. Furthermore, in addition to indole-3-acetic acid and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid deaminase biosynthesis, other extracellular secretions of the rhizobacteria function as signaling molecules and elicit stress responsive pathways. Application of PGPR inoculants is a promising measure to combat salinity in agricultural fields, thereby increasing global food production.

Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria in Amelioration of Salinity Stress: A Systems Biology Perspective.

Soil salinity has emerged as a serious issue for global food security. It is estimated that currently about 62 million hectares or 20 percent of the world's irrigated land is affected by salinity. The deposition of an excess amount of soluble salt in cultivable land directly affects crop yields. The uptake of high amount of salt inhibits diverse physiological and metabolic processes of plants even impacting their survival. The conventional methods of reclamation of saline soil which involve scraping, flushing, leaching or adding an amendment (e.g., gypsum, CaCl2, etc.) are of limited success and also adversely affect the agro-ecosystems. In this context, developing sustainable methods which increase the productivity of saline soil without harming the environment are necessary. Since long, breeding of salt-tolerant plants and development of salt-resistant crop varieties have also been tried, but these and aforesaid conventional approaches are not able to solve the problem. Salt tolerance and dependence are the characteristics of some microbes. Salt-tolerant microbes can survive in osmotic and ionic stress. Various genera of salt-tolerant plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (ST-PGPR) have been isolated from extreme alkaline, saline, and sodic soils. Many of them are also known to mitigate various biotic and abiotic stresses in plants. In the last few years, potential PGPR enhancing the productivity of plants facing salt-stress have been researched upon suggesting that ST-PGPR can be exploited for the reclamation of saline agro-ecosystems. In this review, ST-PGPR and their potential in enhancing the productivity of saline agro-ecosystems will be discussed. Apart from this, PGPR mediated mechanisms of salt tolerance in different crop plants and future research trends of using ST-PGPR for reclamation of saline soils will also be highlighted.

Salt-Tolerant Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria for Enhancing Crop Productivity of Saline Soils.

Salinity stress is one of the major abiotic stresses threatening sustainable crop production worldwide. The extent of salinity affected area is expected to cover about 50% of total agricultural land by 2050. Salinity stress produces various detrimental effects on plants' physiological, biochemical, and molecular features and reduces productivity. The poor plant growth under salinity stress is due to reduced nutrient mobilization, hormonal imbalance, and formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), ionic toxicity, and osmotic stress. Additionally, salinity also modulates physicochemical properties and reduces the microbial diversity of soil and thus decreases soil health. On the other hand, the demand for crop production is expected to increase in coming decades owing to the increasing global population. Conventional agricultural practices and improved salt-tolerant crop varieties will not be sufficient to achieve the yields desired in the near future. Plants harbor diverse microbes in their rhizosphere, and these have the potential to cope with the salinity stress. These salinity-tolerant plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) assist the plants in withstanding saline conditions. These plant-associated microbes produce different compounds such as 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), antioxidants, extracellular polymeric substance (EPS), and volatile organic compounds (VOC). Additionally, the naturally associated microbiome of plants has the potential to protect the host through stress avoidance, tolerance, and resistance strategies. Recent developments in microbiome research have shown ways in which novel microbe-assisted technologies can enhance plant salt tolerance and enable higher crop production under saline conditions. This focused review article presents the global scenario of salinity stress and discusses research highlights regarding PGPB and the microbiome as a biological tool for mitigation of salinity stress in plants.

Biofertilizers consists of the microorganisms bringing about the improvement of the nutrients of the soil enhancing their accessibility to the crops. Plant nutrients form the most vital components of the sustainable agriculture. Producing healthy crops for the fulfillment of the demands of the world's growing population is completely dependent upon kind of the fertilizers being used to provide the plants with all the major nutrients but more dependability on the chemical fertilizers is destroying the environmental ecology and negatively influencing the health of humans. Thus, using microbes as bioinoculants is believed to be the best substitute of chemical fertilizers as eco-friendly manner for plant growth and soil fertility. These microbes are known to be the potent tool to provide substantial benefits to crops for sustainable agriculture. The beneficial microbes colonize the plant (epiphytic, endophytic and rhizospheric) systems of crops and plays significant role in nutrient uptake from surrounding ecosystems of plants. The plant associates microbes have ability to promote growth of plant under the natural as well as extreme conditions. These plant growth promoting microbes enhance the plant growth by various direct and indirect plant growth promoting mechanisms such as biological nitrogen fixation, the production of various plant growth hormones, siderophores, HCN, various hydrolytic enzymes and solubilization of potassium, zinc, and phosphorus. Extensive work on the biofertilizers has been done and even available which clearly reveals that these microbes possess the potential of providing the vital nutrients to the crops in adequate quantities for the enrichment of yield of the crops without disturbing the environment.

Microbial biofertilizers: Bioresources and eco-friendly technologies for agricultural and environmental sustainability

The wood diseases are very damaging to the culture of citrus and many hosts around the world. It is considered as a complex pathosystem that requires the analysis of its various aspects. In this context, we conducted epidemiological and etiological studies. Our studies were conducted for four consecutive years (2017-2020) on 25 orchards from five localities in Algeria. The results of symptom diagnosis showed the presence of different categories of symptoms; these are the total and/or partial dieback. The examination of the cross-sections of infected wood showed the presence of different forms of inner necrosis. The isolations from the necrotic tissues of the infected trees put often in evidence the presence of a diversified fungal flora dominated by Botryosphaeriaceae fungi. We also recorded an overall infection rate of 23.28% representing a severity index of 1.77 on a scale of four degrees, giving an incidence of 10.76%. The overall assessment of the dieback situation in the studied orchards showed a rapid increase in all epidemiological indices. The statistical analyzes showed that the factors region, age, rootstock, type of irrigation and soil texture had a highly significant effect on the variation of epidemiological parameters. However, the factor year is only moderately significant. On the other hand, the factor cultivar, has no significant effect on these indices. The epidemiological behavior of dieback in these orchards confirms that the spread of the disease is favored by cultural techniques such as irrigation and pruning.

Abstract Potato late blight, caused by Phytophthora infestans (Mont.) de Bary, is the most destructive disease that threatens potato producers in North-Western Algeria. In these areas, it is not rare that potato growers miss crucial treatments or apply unnecessary ones during growing seasons. To address this situation, the introduction of a scientific-based decision support system should improve the disease management strategy and reduce growing costs to farmers, consumers, and protect the environment. For this purpose, we set up a supervised deep-learning classification process (long-short-term-memory/autoencoder) that classify and predict early late blight outbreak 30 days ahead of its occurrence based on a set of determinant climatic factors. The classification results of the long short term memory-autoencoders (LSTM’s-AE) regarding our multi-annual potato late blight disease occurrence database confirms that the unimodal BlightT_LSTM-AE model that accounts for temperature is the overall best model and temperature is the key parameter to a valid prediction of early late blight disease outbreak, in all targeted regions.
