The gas sensitivity of the W defect in WS2 (VW/WS2) to five toxic gases—HCHO, CH4, CH3HO, CH3OH, and CH3CH3—has been examined in this article. These five gases were adsorbed on the VW/WS2 surface, and the band, density of state (DOS), charge density difference (CDD), work function (W), current–voltage (I–V) characteristic, and sensitivity of adsorption systems were determined. Interestingly, for HCHO-VW/WS2, the energy level contribution of HCHO is closer to the Fermi level, the charge transfer (B) is the largest (0.104 e), the increase in W is more obvious than other adsorption systems, the slope of the I–V characteristic changes more obviously, and the calculated sensitivity is the highest. To sum up, VW/WS2 is more sensitive to HCHO. In conclusion, VW/WS2 has a great deal of promise for producing HCHO chemical sensors due to its high sensitivity and selectivity for HCHO, which can aid in the precise and efficient detection of toxic gases.

Highly Sensitive and Selective Defect WS2 Chemical Sensor for Detecting HCHO Toxic Gases

This research was conducted to investigate the biochemical effects of thymosin alpha-1 using human lung cancer cells (A549). The A549 cells were treated with different concentrations of Thα1 for 24 h and the growth, inhibition of cells was determined. Thα1 revealed anti-proliferative effect at 24 and 48 μg/ml after 24 h. Furthermore, it indicated antioxidant properties by significantly enhancing the activity of catalase (12 μg/ml), superoxide dismutase (6 and 12 μg/ml), and glutathione peroxidase (3, 6 and 12 μg/ml) and reducing the production of cellular ROS. Our results showed that Thα1 inhibits the migration of A549 cells in a concentration-dependent manner after 24 and 48 h. Moreover, the effect of Thα1 on apoptosis was investigated by Hoechst 33342 staining and cell cycle analysis. Results demonstrated no significant effect on the induction of apoptosis in A549 cells. In conclusion, our results showed the antioxidant properties of Thα1 on A549 cancer cells.

To investigate the influence of steel fiber on improving the high-temperature resistance of hybrid fiber-reinforced ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC), four types of UHPC specimens were prepared. The residual strength and fracture energy of all UHPCs were determined after exposure to varying high temperatures, and internal temperature in the specimens were also measured. Additionally, explosive spalling tests were performed on specimens with different moisture contents. The results indicate that the residual mechanical properties of UHPC initially increase and subsequently decrease as the target temperature increases. Notable differences in thermal conductivity were observed among the tested UHPC specimens. As the moisture content of the specimens increased, the likelihood and severity of explosive spalling in the specimens increased. Corrugated high-strength steel fibers, measuring 35 mm in length and 1 mm in diameter, are highly effective at preventing explosive spalling of UHPC, and high-temperature treated recycled steel fiber from tires also exhibits better performance than other two types of steel fiber. High tensile strength of steel fiber and its distinctive corrugated appearance can be the primary contributing factors. Furthermore, two established computational models which demonstrated a significant level of congruence were employed for evaluating explosive spalling and anti-spalling properties of UHPC specimens. This suggests that cracking resistance provided by steel fiber plays an important role in preventing the explosive spalling of UHPC, emphasizing the importance of exploring specific steel fiber based on its appearance and tensile strength. 

Influence of steel fiber types on residual mechanical properties and explosive spalling of hybrid fiber reinforced ultra-high performance concrete: Optimization and evaluations

High-entropy nitride powders are one of prerequisite materials for the preparation of high-performance high-entropy nitride ceramics. In this paper, high-entropy (HfZrTiNbTa)N powders were synthesized via nitride (i.e., silicon nitride (Si3N4)) thermal reduction with soft mechano-chemical assistance. The results show that metal oxides like hafnium dioxide (HfO2), zirconium dioxide (ZrO2), titanium dioxide (TiO2), niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5), and tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) can all be transformed into the corresponding metal nitrides in the presence of Si3N4 at 1700 ℃, and solid solution of the metal nitrides can be formed as the temperature increases to 2100 ℃. The high-entropy (HfZrTiNbTa)N powders with submicron-sized particles, a narrower size distribution, and a single face-centered cubic (fcc) structure are obtained from raw material mixtures ground for 10 h and subsequently sintered at 1800 ℃. In addition, the high-entropy bulk nitride ceramics with relative density (Rw) of 94.31%±0.76%, Vickers hardness of 21.00±0.94 GPa, and fracture toughness (KIC) of 3.18±0.16 MPa·m1/2 are obtained with submicron-sized powders, which are superior to those obtained with micron-sized powders.

Influence of fibers on tensile behavior of ultra-high performance concrete: a review

Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) is prone to explosive spalling at high temperatures, which compromises the load-bearing capacity of the structures. In this paper, the effects of the content and length/diameter ratio of polypropylene (PP) fibers on the explosive spalling resistance of the steel and PP hybrid fiber-reinforced UHPC were investigated utilizing experimental method. First, the UHPC specimens were prepared using the conventional curing method. Second, the UHPC specimens were heated using the ISO-834 standard heating curve. Thirdly, the appearances, the first spalling time, the first spalling temperature, and the mass loss of the specimens were used to evaluate the explosive spalling resistance of the UHPC. The results demonstrated that the steel and PP hybrid fiber-reinforced UHPC has much greater explosive spalling resistance than the steel fiber-reinforced UHPC. The explosive spalling resistance of the hybrid fiber-reinforced UHPC is strongly influenced by the content and length/diameter ratio of the PP fibers. Generally, the explosive spalling resistance of the hybrid fiber-reinforced UHPC increases with the increase of the PP fiber content and length/diameter ratio. • Incorporation of steel fiber does not provide protection against explosive spalling. • The extent of explosive spalling decreases with the increase of the PP fiber content. • Spalling-induced mass loss reduces with increasing PP fiber length/diameter ratio. • At low length/diameter ratio, explosive spaalling resistance does not increase significantly.

pH measurement has received extensive attention from researchers in numerous fields including medical diagnostics agriculture, food industry, marine, and chemical engineering. Owing to their electrode stability, drift degree, and preparation process, iridium/iridium oxide electrodes are considered as the most promising candidate for pH detection under these conditions. In this study, iridium/iridium oxide electrodes were fabricated by thermal cycling oxidation method. The relationship between the electrode structure and performance was investigated and discussed. To study the influence of supercritical treatment, the as-prepared electrodes were treated at 35 MPa and 400 °C for 3 h. After examining their pH response, the supercritically treated electrodes exhibit better performance than the untreated iridium/iridium oxide electrodes. The structural changes of the treated electrodes were investigated by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, cyclic voltammograms and scanning electron microscopy. The results revealed the important changes in the iridium oxide film of the electrode after supercritical treatment, such as its morphology, chemical bond, valence state, and defects, which collaborated to achieve its improved performance.
