The uncontrolled introduction of micropollutants to the environment has caused huge concern globally owing to their hazardous effects. Although conventional advanced oxidation processes are fruitful to stimulate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate (PDS) to produce reactive oxygen species (ROSs) and eradication of hazardous materials, their high operational cost and leaching of metal ions have opened another chapter of pollution in the form of heavy metals in the environment. Therefore, low-cost, and highly efficient degradation techniques are most urgently required to prevent the large-scale accumulation of hazardous materials in the environment. In this review, we have discussed in detail the photocatalytic stimulation of PMS and PDS for the initiation of ROSs to oxidize highly toxic environmental pollutants. Some highly efficient carbonaceous photocatalysts and supportive materials including g-C3N4, multi walled carbon nanotubes, graphene, and graphene oxide are discussed owing to their supreme charge conductivity and large surface area to present huge number of active sites and assist the stimulation of PMS and PDS. Further, we have discussed the role of different metal organic frameworks in the stimulation of PMS and PDS for pollutants eradication. Detailed degradation mechanisms of many pollutants are provided to support the generation of different ROSs working in the eradication of the target substances. Finally, a future perspective has been discussed for the incoming researchers to cope with environmental issues properly. 

Recent progress in emerging materials and hybrid nanocomposites for peroxymonosulfate and peroxydisulfate activation towards solar light-driven photocatalytic degradation of emerging pollutants

The combination of photocatalysis and the Fenton reaction has been recognized as a promising technology for the removal of antibiotics from wastewater. In this study, the growth of magnetic recyclable FeOOH nanoneedles on the surface of biochar (BC) was realized by carbonization and hydrothermal two step method for efficient treatment of antibiotic wastewater. The introduction of BC not only increases the light absorption performance but also accelerates the transfer and separation efficiency of the interface photogenerated charge, further improving the photocatalytic performance. BC/FeOOH displayed enhanced photocatalytic activity compared with BC or FeOOH. Importantly, BC/FeOOH demonstrated promoted photo-Fenton catalytic performance, achieving 92 % of TC degradation rate in presence of H2O2 under the visible light irradiation with 90 min, compared to the photocatalytic efficiency of BC/FeOOH (70 % of TC) without H2O2, attributing to the presence of H2O2 promoted the recycling of Fe3+/Fe2+. Moreover, the O2− and h+ were found to be the important active species, and the potential degradation mechanism and pathway were investigated. Furthermore, magnetic BC/FeOOH demonstrated remarkable reusability and excellent cycling capability. The present study offers valuable insights into the development of a photocatalysis-Fenton synergy system for the effective decontamination of antibiotic wastewater. 

Efficiently removal of tetracycline via synergistic photocatalysis with Fenton reaction with biochar/FeOOH

Fe-Cu bimetal metal-organic framework for efficient decontamination via Fenton-like process: Synthesis, performance and mechanism.

Simultaneous modulation of the coordination environment of single-atom catalysts (SACs) and the construction of architectures with optimized exposed active sites are effective strategies to boost peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation. Herein, the single-atom Fe supported on bio-sourced porphyrin-based porous active carbon (Fe-PAC) was reported with high porosity and abundant active sites. In particular, Fe-PAC showed high adsorption capacity (1892.7 mg·g-1) and enhanced PMS activation for degrading 96.1% sulfamethazine (SMT) even in complicated environmental interference. The reactive oxygen species analytic experiments revealed that the Fe-PAC achieved high 1O2 generation selectivity by activating PMS, which was confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations results. The single Fe atoms were verified to serve as the dominant sites to activate PMS via the single O of SO42-, yielding 1O2 through pathway PMS → OH* → O* → OOH* → 1O2. Therefore, the Fe-sites-generated 1O2 could directly degrade the N-coordination sphere-adsorbed and pore-filling SMT with enhanced decontamination efficiency. This study sheds new insights on PMS activation mechanisms over single-atom metals-carbonaceous materials, thus promote its application for environmental remediation. 

Bio-porphyrin supported single-atom iron catalyst boosting peroxymonosulfate activation for pollutants degradation: A Singlet Oxygen-dominated nonradical pathway

Population growth, urbanization, and decarbonization efforts are collectively straining the supply of limited resources that are necessary to produce batteries, electronics, chemicals, fertilizers, and other important products. Securing the supply chains of these critical resources via the development of separation technologies for their recovery represents a major global challenge to ensure stability and security. Surface water, groundwater, and wastewater are emerging as potential new sources to bolster these supply chains. Recently, a variety of material-based technologies have been developed and employed for separations and resource recovery in water. Judicious selection and design of these materials to tune their properties for targeting specific solutes is central to realizing the potential of water as a source for critical resources. Here, we review the materials that have been developed for membranes, sorbents, catalysts, electrodes, and interfacial solar steam generators (ISSGs) that demonstrate promise for applications in critical resource recovery. In addition, we offer a critical perspective on the grand challenges and key research directions that need to be addressed to improve their practical viability.
