The transgenic P23H line 1 (P23H-1) rat expresses a variant of rhodopsin with a mutation that leads to loss of visual function. This rat strain is an experimental model usually employed to study photoreceptor degeneration. Although the mutated protein should not interfere with other sensory functions, observing severe loss of auditory reflexes in response to natural sounds led us to study auditory brain response (ABR) recording. Animals were separated into different hearing levels following the response to natural stimuli (hand clapping and kissing sounds). Of all the analyzed animals, 25.9% presented auditory loss before 50 days of age (P50) and 45% were totally deaf by P200. ABR recordings showed that all the rats had a higher hearing threshold than the control Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats, which was also higher than any other rat strains. The integrity of the central and peripheral auditory pathway was analyzed by histology and immunocytochemistry. In the cochlear nucleus (CN), statistical differences were found between SD and P23H-1 rats in VGluT1 distribution, but none were found when labeling all the CN synapses with anti-Syntaxin. This finding suggests anatomical and/or molecular abnormalities in the auditory downstream pathway. The inner ear of the hypoacusic P23H-1 rats showed several anatomical defects, including loss and disruption of hair cells and spiral ganglion neurons. All these results can explain, at least in part, how hearing impairment can occur in a high percentage of P23H-1 rats. P23H-1 rats may be considered an experimental model with visual and auditory dysfunctions in future research.

Effect of hypoglycemic anti-deafness capsules in diabetic patients with deafness and toxicological assessment in rats.

Objective To study the efficacy and safety of the Jiang Tang Fang Long Jiao Nang (Hypoglycemic Anti-Deafness Capsule) in treating non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus with hearing loss. Methods Two hundred ninety six patients with non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus and hearing loss were randomly assigned to a treatment group(n=164, 208 ears) and a control group(n=132, 184 ears). Patients in the treatment group were treated with the Jiang Tang Fang Long Jiao Nang and supplement herbal preparations as indicated by traditional Chinese medicine dialectical assessment, while control patients received glibenclamide and conventional treatments for deafness. Hearing, fasting blood glucose(FBG), post-prandial blood glucose(PBG), 24 hour urine sugar, platelet function indices, blood superoxide dismutase(SOD) and lipid peroxides(LPO) levels, and symptom improvement were compared between the two groups. Results The rate of hearing improvement was 56.7% for the treatment group and 26.6% for the control. FBG, PBG and 24 hour urine sugar improved in both groups, but the last two were superior in the treatment group compared to the control. Symptoms improvement was also superior in the treatment group compared to the control. In patients receiving Jiang Tang Fang Long Jiao Nang treatment, platelet function indices, SOD and LPO were all improved, while only LOP improvement was noticed in control patients. No acute or long-term toxicity was demonstrated for the Jiang Tang Fang Long Jiao Nang in animal tests. The Jiang Tang Fang Long Jiao Nang lowered blood glucose and serum triglycerides in a rat model of alloxan-induced diabetes. Conclusion The Jiang Tang Fang Long Jiao Nang is effective in improving hearing and diabetic indices in diabetic patients with deafness, without significant side effects.

Jiang Tang Fang Long Jiao Nang in Treating Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus with Hearing Loss

Objective To investigate the clinical efficacy of acupuncture and moxibustion for incomplete adhesive intestinal obstruction. Methods A total of 100 patients with incomplete adhesive intestinal obstruction were randomly divided into an observation group and a control group, and there were 50 patients in each group. The control group was treated with routine western medicine treatment, while the observation group was treated with acupuncture and moxibustion therapy on the foundation of the routine western medicine treatment of the control group. Zhōngwan (中脘CV12), Tiānshū (天枢ST25), Zusānlĭ (足三里ST36), Shangjuxū (上巨虚ST37), Zhīgōu (支沟TE6), Dachangshū (大肠俞BL 25), and Xiaochangshū (小肠俞BL27) were taken when acupuncture was performed. Moxibustion was performed with moxibustion box on abdomen after acupuncture. The time of abdominal pain relief, the first anal exhausting, the first defecation and intestines sound recovery, surgery conversion rate and clinical efficacy were observed in the two groups. Results The time of abdominal pain relief, the first anal exhausting, the first defecation and intestines sound recovery in the observation group were all shorter than those of the control group. There were statistically significant differences between the two groups (all P  Conclusions Acupuncture and moxibustion therapy on the foundation of the routine western medicine treatment, which can reduce the surgical conversion rate and cut down the time of treatment, was superior to routine western medicine treatment on the clinical efficacy of incomplete adhesive intestinal obstruction.

Acupuncture and moxibustion for incomplete adhesive intestinal obstruction: A randomized controlled trial

Objective: To observe the curative effect of maxillary bone cyst by maxillary sinus cyst drug combination, it provide innovative approach for non-surgical treatment of maxillary bone cyst. Methods: 12 patients with maxillary sinus cyst were selected, all cases were confirmed by the jaw of surface fault CT or MRI examination, disinfection of double flank cheek skin and oral vestibular mucosa, after local anesthesia or surface anesthesia all patients with nasal endoscopic examination of the nasal passages, were punctured into maxillary sinus cyst from inferior nasal meatus, the needle core was removed, the cyst fluid was taken out by cannula, then through cannula place the right amount of maxillary sinus cyst drug composition were injected. The bases were iodine and dexamethasone solution with 2:1 injection (i.e., take out 2 ml cyst fluid, inject of 1 ml drugs, and so on). As routine is not easy to puncture biopsy in place of the cyst, image guided puncture was choosen. Results: 12 patients with maxillary sinus cyst came back to the hospital for a check of sinus CT after treatment of 1 to 3 months, the results are excellent, and 1 to 2 years follow-up were carried on, the follow-up of 11 cases, 1 case was lost of follow-up. During follow-up of patients, before treatment with clinical symptoms caused by maxillary sinus cyst, symptoms disappeared after treatment, the sinus CT showed cyst disappear significantly. Conclusion: The curative effect of maxillary bone cyst by maxillary sinus cyst drug combination is definite, it is landmark in the non-surgical treatment for maxillary bone cyst.

Objective: To investigate the sinus swelling side effect onmaxillary sinus cyst of nasalmucosa cilia.Methods: 34 cases ofmaxillary sinus cyst patients (treatment group), mean age (25.5 ± 2.2) years old; the control group was 30 healthy persons, the average age was(31.8 ± 9.1), treatment group oral sinus Xiaozhong decoction, and the control group before treatment, 30 days to observe the variation of ostiomeatal complex mucociliary group before and after treatment. The nasal mucosa of maxillary sinus mucosa around the mouth, immediately after collection in 2.5% glutaraldehyde solution, and stored in the 40! refrigerator. Then use the saccharin test measuring nasal mucociliary transport rate (Mucociliary transport rate, MTR), statistically compared with the healthy group and treatment group before and after the ostiomeatal complex mucociliary change. Results: The two groups by saccharin test measuring nasal mucociliary transport rate (Mucociliary trans-port rate,MTR) detection: healthy group 30 cases, MTR (mm/min) 8.18±2.29 before treatment,the treatment group 34 cases, MTR(mm/min) 4.06 ±1.24 (with the healthy group: P 0.05).Conclusion: Sinus swelling can improve the maxillary sinus cyst with nasal mucociliary function, reduce inflammation ofmaxillary sinus

Effect of sinus swelling of maxillary sinus cyst of nasal mucosa cilia

Objective To study the influence in bone mineral density of diabetes with deafness in different syndrome types by Prescriptions of hypoglycemic preventing deafness. Methods We treated 42 patients (84 ears) of diabetes with deafness in different syndrome type by prescriptions of hypoglycemic prevent deafness. Then determinate bone gla protein (BGP), calcitonin (HCT), parathyroid hormone (PTH) and bone metabolic index of these patients before treatment and after treatment. We also maesured the bone mineral density of lumbar spine, femoral, arm, heel of these patient in treatment group. There were 40 normal people in control group. Results We compared the bone metabolism of patients with different syndromes in group treatment before the treatment with the normal people. Results show that BGP, HCT of patients with Yin scorching has no obvious statistical significance (P > 0.05). PTH of patients had gawped higher (P 0.05). Patient in qi and Yin deficiency, deficiency of Yin and Yang have obvious changes (P 0.05). Conclusion Prescriptions of hypoglycemic preventing deafness can improve the bone metabolism and bone mineral density of diabetes patients with deafness in different syndrome types. It can provide basis for diabetes-kidney-bone-ear integration hypothesis.

The Influence in Bone Mineral Density of Diabetes with Deafness in Different Syndrome Types by Prescriptions of Hypoglycemic Preventing Deafness

Objective: To observe the influence of jiangtang fanglong capsule to hearing impairment in deaf diabetes animal models. 50 Wistar rats randomly selected from 60 Wistar rats. The other 10 rats were normal control group (group A). 50 Wistar rats with experimental deaf diabetic, induced by 55 mg/kg streptozotocin (STZ) once intraperitoneal, were randomly divided into five groups. And the five groups contain model control group (group B), lower density (3.3 g/kg. d) jiangtang fanglong capsule was administrated (group C), middle density (310 g/kg. d) jiangtang fanglong capsule was administrated (group D), high density (3.3 g/kg. d) jiangtang fanglong capsule was administrated (group E) and yuquanwan (25 g/kg. d) was administrated (group F). After 60 days, test the fasting blood glucose (FBG), body weight (BW) and fasting insulin (FINS) of the wistar rats. Calculate the HO-MA-IR and HOMA-B, insulin was measured by radioimmunoassay. Tests showed that compared with model group, Jiangtang Fanglong capsule in middle and high dose groups reduce the index of the animal models in a dose-dependent manner (P 0.01), the HOMA-β shrink as the dose increased (P 0.01), improve the insulin expression in pancreatic islets (P 0.01), compare group E to B, it doesn’t make any sense (P > 0.05). Our results suggest that Jiangtang Fanglong capsule could improve the pancreatic β-cell’s function of the diabetic deaf animal model.

Effect of Jiangtang Fonglong Capsule on Expressions of Insulin of Deaf Animal Models of Diabetes

We discussed the influence of Jiangtang Fanglong capsule (glucose-lowering deaf-preventing capsule) to hearing of experimental diabetic deaf animal model. The experimental diabetic deaf animal model was replicated by disposable intraperitoneal injection of 55mg/kg streptozotocin(STZ) to every Wistar rats. 40 Wistar rats were randomly divided into two groups, treatment group treated by 10g•kg-1•d-1 Jiangtang Fanglong capsule suspension in intragastric gavage, and control group by equivalent normal saline, the two groups were separately accepted auditory brainstem response(ABR) detection in first month,second month,third month after model establishment. After first month, the latency and inter period of each wave of ABR of two groups were no significantly difference(P>0.05);and after second, third month, the latency and inter period of each wave of ABR of treatment group were obviously shorter than that of control group, difference was significant(P&#60;0.05, P&#60;0.01). Our results suggest that Jiangtang Fanglong capsule may be have a prevention and cure function to the hearing of diabetic deaf animal model.
