An automated telephone answering system with plug-in tone responsive unit at each of a plurality of extensions, a central answering unit responds to a caller initiated, telephone company generated, ring signal on the telephone line and establishes a connection with the calling phone. Each of the remote units responds to a different predetermined, selectable tone frequency. When the caller pushes a key on a standard Touch Tone phone key pad to select a specific extension, the responding remote unit generates a ringing signal for that extension. If the telephone line has an on-hook status, the system has means that prevents response to further tone signals.

Connection lines (30) emanating from the line cards are connected to the inputs of a remotely controlled crossbar array (22) where the inputs of the array can be selectively connected to the outputs of the crossbar array. The outputs of the crossbar array are connected to distribution lines (28) that terminate at one of a plurality of feeder distribution interfaces (20) that connect to customer lines (32) that terminate a customer premise equipment (6). By properly configuring the crossbar array (22), the line cards (16) can be connected to any of the feeder distribution interfaces (20) such that any customer line (32) has access to any available line card (16). In this manner the network resources can be efficiently distributed among the customer lines

Method and apparatus for crossconnecting transmission members in the outside distribution plant of a telecommunications network

A system for supervising a telephone connection using over a pulse code modulated carrier network between a first customer's equipment and a second customer's equipment. A first channel unit is located in a channel bank serving the first customer's telephone equipment. A second channel unit is located in a channel bank at a remote central office that is geographically remote from the first customer's equipment. The second channel unit is coupled to the second customer's equipment through a switch at the remote Central Office. The second channel unit includes a means for detecting a reverse battery signal generated by the Central Office when the second customer's telephone goes off-hook, and a means for converting the reverse battery signal into a digital supervisory signal. The second channel unit transmits the digital supervisory signal, preferably using the A and B signalling bits on a pulse code modulated carrier system. The first channel unit includes an input coupled the PCM carrier and an output coupled to the first customer's telephone equipment. The first channel unit receives the digital supervisory signal and converts the digital supervisory signal to a reverse battery signal, and provides the reverse battery signal to the first customer's telephone equipment.

An alerting cadence control system for a telephone network having a telephone exchange, subscriber transmission equipment connected to the telephone exchange, and a plurality of telephone sets each connected to the subscriber transmission equipment. The subscriber transmission equipment includes a plurality of subscriber interface cards and subscriber-shared alerting cadence control means, each of the cards incorporating a switch for performing alerting cadence switching of each telephone set. The subscriber-shared alerting cadence control means has a memory for control setting data in the format of a table in which is written a control program for controlling the switch connected to each telephone set. Where alerting cadence control is to cover a new subscriber service offered to a new telephone set, the applicable data in the table are modified from the telephone exchange under remote control without replacement of the subscriber interface card for that telephone set. This provides easy alerting cadence control over service requirements of newly added subscribers.

A central office line card with distributed signaling voltages comprised of a plurality of subscriber line interface circuits connected to a common signal bus. Standard ringing signal is received from a remote generator within the central office and applied to the common signal bus via a first relay. A receptacle is provided on the line card for receiving a removable module containing circuitry for generating further signaling voltages such as party line ringing and coin telephone test and control voltages. Signals from the module are applied to the common signal bus via a further plurality of relays. Each of these subscriber line interface circuits is connected to the common signal bus via additional respective relays.
