Reduced handgrip strength as a marker of frailty predicts clinical outcomes in patients with heart failure undergoing ventricular assist device placement.
Christine J. Chung,Christina Wu,Meaghan Jones,Tomoko S. Kato,Tien T. Dam,Raymond C. Givens,Danielle L. Templeton,Mathew S. Maurer,Yoshifumi Naka,Hiroo Takayama,Donna M. Mancini,P. Christian Schulze +11 more
TL;DR: Patients with advanced HF show impaired handgrip strength indicating a global myopathy, which is associated with higher postoperative complication rates and increased mortality after VAD implantation, and the addition of measures of skeletal muscle function underlying the frailty phenotype to traditional risk markers might have incremental prognostic value in patients undergoing evaluation for VAD placement.

Epicardial Fat Volume in Patients With Left Ventricular Systolic Dysfunction
Tuba Khawaja,Christine Greer,Aalap Chokshi,Nelson Chavarria,Samir R. Thadani,Meaghan Jones,Kenneth J. Schaefle,Ketan Bhatia,J. Elias Collado,Daichi Shimbo,Andrew J. Einstein,P. Christian Schulze +11 more
TL;DR: The data demonstrate a stepwise decrease in EFV in patients with impaired cardiac function, regardless of coronary artery calcium scores, markers of renal function, lipid metabolism, fasting blood glucose, or body mass index.

Periodontitis and bone metabolism in patients with advanced heart failure and after heart transplantation.
Ulrike Schulze-Späte,Ulrike Schulze-Späte,Iman Mizani,Kristina Rodriguez Salaverry,Jaime Chang,Christina Wu,Meaghan Jones,Peter J. Kennel,Danielle Brunjes,Tse-Hwei Choo,Tomoko S. Kato,Donna Mancini,Donna Mancini,John T. Grbic,P. Christian Schulze,P. Christian Schulze +15 more
TL;DR: Heart failure (HF) is a multiorgan, pro‐inflammatory syndrome that impairs bone metabolism and pro‐ inflammatory cytokines and bone catabolism enhance periodontal disease, a local inflammatory, bacteria‐induced disease that causes bone loss andperiodontal soft tissue destruction.

Analysis of Skeletal Muscle Torque Capacity and Circulating Ceramides in Patients with Advanced Heart Failure.
Danielle L. Brunjes,Mark Dunlop,Christina Wu,Meaghan Jones,Tomoko S. Kato,Peter J. Kennel,Hilary F. Armstrong,Hilary F. Armstrong,Tse Hwei Choo,Matthew N. Bartels,Daniel E. Forman,Donna M. Mancini,P. Christian Schulze +12 more
TL;DR: Delayed torque development suggests skeletal muscle impairments that may reflect abnormal neuromuscular functional coupling may be further compounded by increased adiposity and inflammation associated with increased ceramides.
