The Chir Pine, Pinus roxburghii, named after William Roxburgh, is a pine native to the Himalaya. Pinus roxburghii Sarg. (Pinaceae) is traditionally used for several medicinal purposes in India. As the oil of the plant is extensively used in number of herbal preparation for curing inflammatory disorders, the present study was undertaken to assess analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities of its bark extract. Dried and crushed leaves of Pinus roxburghii Sarg. were defatted with petroleum ether and then extracted with alcohol. The alcoholic extract at the doses of 100 mg/kg, 300 mg/kg, and 500 mg/kg body weight was subjected to evaluation of analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities in experimental animal models. Analgesic activity was evaluated by acetic acid-induced writhing and tail immersion tests in Swiss albino mice; acute and chronic anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated by carrageenan-induced paw oedema and cotton pellet granuloma in Wistar albino rats. Diclofenac sodium and indomethacin were employed as reference drugs for analgesic and anti-inflammatory studies, respectively. In the present study, the alcoholic bark extract of Pinus roxburghii Sarg. demonstrated significant analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities in the tested models.

The total phenolics and individual phenolics of the groups; hydroxybenzoic acids, hydroxycinnamic acids, flavonols, flavonol algycones, flavan-3-ols, stilbe nes and anthocyanins were analysed from healthy and powdery mildew infected grape leaves, berries and wines. The wine varieties viz., Cabernet Sauvignon a nd Sauvignon blanc reported higher leaf phenolic conte nt as compared to a table grape variety- Thompson Seedless. Significant increase in total phenolic co ntent of leaves was registered with increase in fol iar disease severity. Berries and wines of Cabernet Sauvignon e xhibited polynomial pattern of total phenolic conte nt with increase at lower levels of infection followed by d ecreasing trend. However, Sauvignon blanc wines reported linear negative relationship with powdery mildew in fection levels. Phenolic profile of the leaves, ber ries and wines was significantly altered by the disease. The foliar infection in general resulted into accumula tion of phenolic compounds in leaves and reduction in berri es and wines due to cluster disease infection. Mult ifold accumulation of resveratrol was recorded in infecte d berries and its wines while anthocyanins were red uced significantly due to infections.

Qualitative phytochemical screening and evaluation of anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic activities of Microcos paniculata barks and fruits.

Objective: The present study was designed to evaluate the antioxidant, analgesic, and antiinflammatory activities of the methanolic extract of Piper betle leaves (MPBL). Materials and Methods: MPBL was evaluated for anti-inflammatory activity using carrageenaninduced hind paw edema model. Analgesic activity of MPBL was evaluated by hot plate, writhing, and formalin tests. Total phenolic and flavonoids content, total antioxidant activity, scavenging of 1,1diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical, peroxynitrate (ONOO) as well as inhibition of total ROS generation, and assessment of reducing power were used to evaluate antioxidant potential of MPBL. Results: The extract of MPBL, at the dose of 100 and 200 mg/kg, produced a significant (p<0.05) increase in pain threshold in hot plate method whereas significantly (p<0.05) reduced the writhing caused by acetic acid and the number of licks induced by formalin in a dose-dependent manner. The same ranges of doses of MPBL caused significant (p<0.05) inhibition of carrageenan-induced paw edema after 4 h in a dose-dependent manner. In DPPH, ONOO - , and total ROS scavenging method, MPBL showed good antioxidant potentiality with the IC 50 value of 16.33±1.02, 25.16±0.61 , and 41.72±0.48 µg/ml, respectively with a significant (p<0.05) good reducing power. Conclusion: The findings of the study suggested that MPBL has strong analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects, conforming the traditional use of this plant for inflammatory pain alleviation to its antioxidant potentiality.

Analgesic Activity of Methanolic Extracts of Nerium indicum Mill.

The work was carried out to investigate the analgesic activity of the whole plant of Tragia involucrata Linn. The dried whole plant was successively extracted with petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and methanol. Experiments were carried out with these extracts for their peripheral and central antinociceptive potentials on acetic acid induced writhing and radiant heat tail-flick models in mice, respectively. Both the ethyl acetate and methanolic extracts showed significant writhing inhibition while the elongation of tail-flick time was most prominent with methanolic extract at an oral dose of 500 mg/kg body weight.
