This book, for those who may be unfamiliar with this annual publication, is a review of the psychoanalytic literature and includes selections by a number of well-known and consistent contributors to the psychoanalytic concepts in development of children, the psychopathology of children, and the clinical problems involved in the treatment of children. It is of interest, of course, to members of related professional disciplines and will be of greatest value to those pediatricians who are somewhat familiar with the analytic approach and comfortable with the analytic terminology used. Certainly this and the other volumes do constitute an excellent sampling of the significant contributions to psychoanalytic knowledge of the child during the past 15 years. The Psychoanalytic Study of the Child.

In this article, we highlight the important ideas that have emerged from research on parenting and adolescent development over the past decade. Beginning with research on authoritative parenting, we examine key elements of this parenting style and its influence across diverse contexts and populations. We turn our attention to four topics that have generated much research in the past decade: (1) how parenting contributes to adolescent peer and romantic relationships; (2) the impact of parenting on adolescent brain development; (3) gene-environment interactions in parenting research; and (4) parents' involvement in adolescents' social media use. We discuss contemporary challenges and ways parents can promote healthy development. We consider the integration of research, practice, and policy that best supports parents and adolescents.

We Know Even More Things: A Decade Review of Parenting Research.

The present study examined patterns of romantic pathways in 100 Israeli emerging adults (54 males) who were followed from age 22 to 29 years. Analyses of interviews at age 29 yielded four distinctive romantic pathways differing in stability and ability to learn from romantic experiences: Sporadic, Lengthy Relationships but Absence of Experiential Learning, Moving from Casual to Steady Involvements, and Steady Relationships. Low efficacy, immature dependency, and level of maternal support measured 7 years earlier, predicted less optimal romantic pathways; Sporadic, and Lengthy relationships but absence of experiential learning. Distinctive gender pathways suggested that men are more likely to embark on a sporadic romantic pathway, while women tend more to prefer a stable romantic pathway. Findings of the study suggest that gender, intrapersonal capabilities, and maternal support can predict the pattern of the romantic pathway on which young people embark during their twenties.

The diversity of romantic pathways during emerging adulthood and their developmental antecedents

One main source of sexual socialization lies within family interactions. Especially sexuality-specific parenting may determine adolescents’ sexual development—adolescents’ sexual behavior and sexual risk behavior, sexualized media consumption and permissive sexual attitudes—to a significant extent, but different ideas exist about how this works. In this longitudinal study, we examined two hypotheses on how sexuality-specific parenting—parenting aimed specifically at children’s sexual attitudes and behaviors—relates to adolescents’ sexual development. A first buffer hypothesis states that parents’ instructive media discussions with their children—called instructive mediation—buffers the effect of sexualized media consumption on adolescents’ sexual attitudes and behavior and, vice versa, the effect of adolescents’ sexual attitudes and behavior on sexualized media consumption. A second brake hypothesis states that parents, by communicating love-and-respect oriented sexual norms, slow down adolescents’ development toward increased sexualized media use, permissive sexual attitudes, and sexual behavior and sexual risk behavior. Using four-wave longitudinal data from 514 Dutch adolescents aged 13–16 years (49.8% female), we found evidence to support a brake effect. More frequent parental communication of love-and-respect oriented sexual norms was associated with less permissive sexual attitudes and, for boys, with less advanced sexual behavior and a less rapid increase in sexual risk behavior. Parents’ instructive mediation regarding adolescents’ sexualized media consumption was associated with less permissive sexual attitudes at baseline, but only for girls. No systematic evidence emerged for a buffer effect of parents’ instructive mediation. In conclusion, although our data seem to suggest that parent–child communication about sex is oftentimes “after the fact”, we also find that more directive parental communication that conveys love-and-respect oriented sexual norms brake adolescents’ move toward sexual maturity.

Buffer or Brake? The Role of Sexuality-Specific Parenting in Adolescents’ Sexualized Media Consumption and Sexual Development

In dit onderzoek toetsen we twee hypothesen over de rol van seksuele opvoeding in de ontwikkeling van seksualiteit en seksueel expliciete mediaconsumptie tijdens de adolescentie. De bufferhypothese stelt dat een actieve mediaopvoeding door ouders het effect van seksueel expliciete mediaconsumptie op seksuele attituden en gedrag van adolescenten buffert, en vice versa, het effect van seksuele attituden en gedrag van adolescenten op hun seksueel expliciete mediaconsumptie buffert. Een tweede hypothese, de remhypothese, stelt dat ouders door het communiceren van een seksuele ‘liefde-en-respectnorm’ de ontwikkeling richting meer seksueel expliciete mediaconsumptie, meer permissieve seksuele attituden en meer seksueel (risico) gedrag kunnen afremmen. We analyseerden 4‑wave longitudinale gegevens van 514 Nederlandse adolescenten in de leeftijd van 13–16 jaar (48,8% meisjes) en vonden bewijs voor de remhypothese. Als ouders vaker een liefde-en-respectnorm communiceerden, hadden adolescenten een minder permissieve seksuele attitude en rapporteerden met name jongens dan minder vergevorderd seksueel gedrag, evenals een minder sterke stijging van seksueel risicogedrag. Een actieve mediaopvoeding voorspelde een minder permissieve seksuele attitude (bij meisjes), maar we vonden geen systematisch bewijs voor de bufferhypothese.

The current study examined the distinctive gender-related expressions of adolescent romantic competence and patterns of maternal and paternal attitudes toward daughters’ and sons’ romantic involvements. Employing a qualitative approach, an in-depth interview assessing romantic competence was given to 69 Israeli adolescents (37 boys) ranging in age from 15 to 18 years, M = 16.74 (SD = .81). In addition, parents were interviewed regarding their attitudes toward their adolescents’ romantic involvements. Findings indicated that girls exhibited greater romantic maturity and their accounts of romantic involvements were more coherent, compared to boys. Romantic agency did not differ across gender. Mothers and fathers reported similar levels of supportive attitude toward offspring’s romantic involvement.
