EEG examinations were performed on 54 healthy subjects. The alpha index, mean alpha amplitude and the alpha blocking responses to serial paired flashes of light were determined for each subject. No significant correlation was found between any of these variables and extraversion or neuroticism as measured by the Maudsley Personality Inventory. The degree of habituation of the alpha blocking responses to the serial visual stimulation was examined in those subjects with high and low extraversion scores. There was no difference in the rate or extent of habituation in these two groups. The previous literature on the relation between personality and the alpha rhythm is reviewed.

Russian psychiatry has a dramatic history, and until now has been at a transitional stage of development. It is facing problems not only common in world psychiatry, but also specific to eastern Europe, in particular Russia. Starting from the beginning of the 1990s, considerable changes have occurred in psychiatry, especially after 1992 when the law on psychiatric care and guarantees of citizens’ rights in its provision was adopted. It became the ideological and legislative basis for reforms. However, there are definite obstacles to structural reforms in psychiatry. They are unfavourable technical conditions in many psychiatric clinics, hypercentralization of psychiatric services, shortage of clinical psychologists and social workers in psychiatry, some difficulties in cooperation between psychiatric and general medical institutions. History and current condition of Russian psychiatry

In 1921 Montagu Lomax published his book The Experiences of An Asylum Doctor, in which he used his experiences as a locum at Prestwich Hospital to criticize standards of mental health care in Britain. Lomax's criticisms of Prestwich Hospital led to a Royal Commission and the 1930 Mental Treatment Act. However, many of the circumstances described by Lomax could still be observed at Prestwich in the 1960's and 1970's. The oral testimony of nurses who worked at Prestwich between 1922 and 1975 and documentary sources are considered in an attempt to explain how a hospital which had been the centre of debates about psychiatric reform in the nineteen-twenties failed to emerge as one of the country's more progressive psychiatric hospitals.

Mental nursing has continued to be neglected in the history of psychiatry. This paper considers the impact of a decade of radical developments on the role and outlook of nurses in British mental hospitals during the 1930s. The Mental Treatment Act 1930 introduced voluntary admission for early, supposedly treatable cases, although there was paucity of effective treatment. In the mid-1930s shock therapies, administered with great enthusiasm by asylum doctors, promised to cure insanity by physical means. Although these were important milestones in the progress of psychiatry, for the majority of nurses and patients life continued much as before. Despite advances in training, working conditions and therapeutic activity, the institutional culture of nursing was remarkably resilient to the forces of change.
