Deep-learning-based reconstruction of the neutrino direction and energy for in-ice radio detectors

Accelerator physics relies on numerical algorithms to solve optimization problems in online accelerator control and tasks such as experimental design and model calibration in simulations. The effectiveness of optimization algorithms in discovering ideal solutions for complex challenges with limited resources often determines the problem complexity these methods can address. The accelerator physics community has recognized the advantages of Bayesian optimization algorithms, which leverage statistical surrogate models of objective functions to effectively address complex optimization challenges, especially in the presence of noise during accelerator operation and in resource-intensive physics simulations. In this review article, we offer a conceptual overview of applying Bayesian optimization techniques toward solving optimization problems in accelerator physics. We begin by providing a straightforward explanation of the essential components that make up Bayesian optimization techniques. We then give an overview of current and previous work applying and modifying these techniques to solve accelerator physics challenges. Finally, we explore practical implementation strategies for Bayesian optimization algorithms to maximize their performance, enabling users to effectively address complex optimization challenges in real-time beam control and accelerator design. Bayesian optimization algorithms for accelerator physics

Muography takes advantage of the specific properties of cosmic-ray muons, relativistic leptons that are much heavier than electrons. Cosmic-ray muons have strong penetrating power and a relativistic nature, which means they can be used in a range of technologies, including imagery; positioning, navigation, timing (PNT); and secured communication in environments where conventional techniques are unavailable. As cosmic-ray muons are universally present on Earth, muographic measurements can be conducted in the same manner across the globe. Similar results have been produced independent of where measurements were taken. This has enabled the muographic field to grow and develop into a powerful tool for investigating natural phenomena, cultural heritage and PNT. This Primer is intended as an introductory article that introduces new and established muographic techniques. Case studies are provided, with examples from recent interdisciplinary advances. Data reproducibility and limitations are discussed, before finishing with an outlook of future developments. Muography takes advantage of the high penetrating power and relativistic nature of cosmic-ray muons for imagery; positioning, navigation, timing; and secured communications. This Primer provides an overview of muography techniques, describing how they are used in Earth and planetary sciences, computer science and social science. 

Muography

We propose to apply several gradient estimation techniques to enable the differentiation of programs with discrete randomness in High Energy Physics. Such programs are common in High Energy Physics due to the presence of branching processes and clustering-based analysis. Thus differentiating such programs can open the way for gradient based optimization in the context of detector design optimization, simulator tuning, or data analysis and reconstruction optimization. We discuss several possible gradient estimation strategies, including the recent Stochastic AD method, and compare them in simplified detector design experiments. In doing so we develop, to the best of our knowledge, the first fully differentiable branching program. 

Branches of a Tree: Taking Derivatives of Programs with Discrete and Branching Randomness in High Energy Physics

Abstract Muon scattering tomography (MST) is a non-destructive technique to image various materials by utilizing cosmic ray muons as probes. A typical MST system with a two-fold track detectors is particularly effective in detecting high-Z materials (e.g. nuclear materials), but difficult to recognize low-Z materials (e.g. explosive materials). In this work, we present a concept of MST system to discriminate both low-Z and high-Z materials by extra measuring momentum of low-energy muons with a Cherenkov detector. A toy Monte Carlo simulation to describe detector responses and multiple scatterings of a muon tracking through materials is developed for statistical tests. Based on momentum-dependent track reconstruction and image reconstruction algorithm, we evaluate separation powers of different materials in the system. The results show that momentum measurement of low-energy muons and accurate track reconstruction can improve separation power of low-Z materials significantly. This may enable the MST system to detect both low-Z and high-Z materials with cosmic ray muons in the whole energy range.

Toward the end-to-end optimization of particle physics instruments with differentiable programming

A key task for customs workers is the interception of hazardous, illegal and counterfeit items in order to protect the health and safety of citizens. However, it is estimated that only a small fraction of cargo is inspected and an even smaller fraction of trafficked goods are detected. Today, the most widely used technology for scanning vehicles, ranging from vans and trucks to railcars, is γ ray and X-ray radiography. New technologies are required to overcome current technological shortcomings, such as the inability to detect the target material composition, the usage of harmful ionising radiation sources and the resultant low throughput. Cosmic ray tomography (CRT) is a promising technology for cargo screening. Cosmic ray muons have average energies of around 10,000 times larger than a typical X-ray and therefore can penetrate relatively large and dense materials. By analysing muon scattering, it is possible to identify materials hidden inside shielding that is too thick or deep for other imaging methods. CRT is also completely passive, exploiting naturally occurring secondary cosmic radiation, and is therefore safe for humans and animals. Contrary to conventional X-ray- or γ-ray-based imaging techniques, CRT also allows material differentiation and anomaly localisation within the cargo or vehicle through the provision of 3D images. This article reviews the current state-of-the-art technology in CRT, critically assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the method, and suggesting further directions for development.

Cosmic-Ray Tomography for Border Security

Non-destructive subsurface imaging methods based on the absorption or scattering of photons or neutrons are becoming increasingly popular in cultural asset conservation. However, these techniques are limited by physical and practical issues: their penetration depth may be insufficient for large items, and they usually necessitate transferring the objects of interest to specialised laboratories. The latter issue is recently being addressed by the development of portable sources, but artificial radiation can be harmful and is thus subjected to strict regulation. Muons are elementary particles that are abundantly and freely created in the atmosphere by cosmic-ray interactions. Their absorption and scattering in matter are respectively dependent on the density and elemental composition of the substance they traverse, suggesting that they could be used for subsurface remote imaging. This novel technique, dubbed"muography", has been used in applications ranging from geophysics to archaeology, but has remained largely unexplored for a wide range of cultural heritage objects that are small by muography standards but whose size and density are too large for conventional imaging methods. This document outlines the general arguments and some early simulation studies that aim at exploring the low-size limit of muography and its relevance for cultural heritage preservation.
