Preparing the books to read every day is enjoyable for many people. However, there are still many people who also don't like reading. This is a problem. The current study explores the effectiveness of involving students in environmental science projects for their environmental knowledge and attitudes towards science. The study design is a quasi-experimental pre-post control group design. The sample was 62 11th-grade female students studying at a public school in Oman. The sample was divided into two groups: an experimental group (N = 34) which conducted five different environmental-based projects for two months and a control group (N = 28) which studied using the traditional methods. For the purpose of study, two instruments were designed: the Environmental Knowledge Test (EKT) and the Science Attitudes Survey (SAS). The results indicated that students’ involvement in environmental projects had a statistically significant positive impact on their environmental knowledge and science attitudes. Geography learning in high school has not been able to develop critical thinking skills, various problems in learning are considered as a boring subject so as less stimulate learners to think critically and less able to solve problems. This study aims to determine the effect of PBL on critical thinking skills in the field of geography study. The orientation of the problem to be raised relates to the material of the maritime axis. The research was conducted with a quasi-experimental design. Data analysis using t test. The subjects of the study were students of class XI IPS in SMA Negeri Barabai. The resulting significance value is 0.00. The results showed that PBL can make the learning of geography effective and efficient, so that the students' critical thinking skills increase. Pembelajaran Geografi di SMA belum mampu mengembangkan keterampilan berpikir kritis, berbagai masalah dalam pembelajaran dianggap sebagai mata pelajaran yang membosankan sehingga kurang merangsang peserta didik untuk berpikir kritis dan kurang mampu untuk mengatasi masalah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh PBL terhadap keterampilan berpikir kritis dalam bidang studi geografi. Orientasi masalah yang akan dimunculkan berkaitan dengan materi poros maritim. Penelitian dilakukan dengan desain eksperimen semu. Analisis data menggunakan uji t. Subjek penelitian adalah peserta didik kelas XI IS di SMA Negeri Barabai. Nilai signifikansi yang dihasilkan adalah 0,00. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa PBL dapat membuat pembelajaran geografi efektif dan efisien sehingga keterampilan berpikir kritis peserta didik meningkat.

Pengaruh Problem-Based Learning (PBL) terhadap Keterampilan Berpikir Kritis

Understanding and learning geographic knowledge and applying it to sustainable development (SD) depends not only on the knowledge itself, but also on how it is taught and studied. The teaching and learning methods for promoting sustainability in geography have not been thoroughly studied. This qualitative study examined articles on geography teaching and SD. The material was selected using keywords related to geography education. The study describes 17 articles published in peer-reviewed scientific journals from 2008 to 2018. The focus group varied from primary to higher education. The proportion of teaching and learning methods were determined. The data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The foci of the analyses were the teaching and learning methods, topics, goals, and levels of thinking skills. Additionally, features of the teaching methods used in geography education, including outdoor education, to achieve the sustainable development goals (SDGs) were investigated. Different teaching methods used together and interactive learning were the most often preferred. Group work and teachers’ presentations were mentioned in 12 articles, and inquiry-based learning and argumentation in half of the articles. The most often written expressions promoting SD in geography education concerned environmental sustainability (42%), followed by social (25%), economic (19%), and cultural sustainability (14%). The most emphasized features of the current teaching methods were active participation, thinking skills, animation, evaluation, dialog, demonstrations, and information and communication technology skills. The whole school approach and forward-looking perspective in geography should be implemented in school education to reach the SDGs and to support SD.

Teaching and Learning Methods in Geography Promoting Sustainability

This article presents research on evaluating problem-based learning using GIS technology in a Singapore secondary school. A quasi-experimental research design was carried to test the PBL pedagogy (PBL-GIS) with an experimental group of students and compare their learning outcomes with a control group who were exposed to PBL but not GIS. The results show significant differences in the learning outcomes between the two groups. Specifically, students in the control group show more memorization skill while students in the experimental group demonstrate more analytical and evaluation skills. The conclusion is that learning with PBL-GIS pedagogy can result in higher-order learning outcomes.

PBL-GIS in Secondary Geography Education: Does It Result in Higher-Order Learning Outcomes?.

This study investigated the environmental learning of a group of senior geography students through a problem-based learning (PBL) field programme to see if the goals of education for the environment could be accomplished. In the PBL field programme, the students were given a problem statement concerning a real-life scenario of an old lady living in a remote village of Hong Kong. During the PBL field programme which also has adopted an action research framework, the students were observed to have identified the problem statement, set hypotheses, constructed the research methods and collected empirical data in an authentic environment all by themselves. This paper reports on the first cycle of this piece of action research. Data were collected both quantitatively and qualitatively via questionnaires, students' reflective journals, field observation notes and group interviews.
