Serpentinization as the source of energy, electrons, organics, catalysts, nutrients and pH gradients for the origin of LUCA and life
Loraine Schwander,Max Brabender,Natalia Mrnjavac,Jessica L. E. Wimmer,Martina Preiner,William F. Martin +5 more
TL;DR: Serpentinization generates reduced carbon, nitrogen and — as newer findings suggest — reduced phosphorous compounds that were likely conducive to the origins process and would help to explain why the principle of chemiosmotic energy harnessing is more conserved than the machinery to generate ion gradients via pumping coupled to exergonic chemical reactions.

Ferredoxin reduction by hydrogen with iron functions as an evolutionary precursor of flavin-based electron bifurcation.
Max Brabender,Delfina P Henriques Pereira,Natalia Mrnjavac,Manon Laura Schlikker,Zen-ichiro Kimura,Jeerus Sucharitakul,Karl Kleinermanns,H. Tüysüz,Wolfgang Buckel,Martina Preiner,William F. Martin +10 more
TL;DR: It is shown that in water, raw iron will transfer electrons from H2 to ferredoxin, uncovering a missing link in early metabolic evolution.

The Moon-Forming Impact and the Autotrophic Origin of Life.
Natalia Mrnjavac,Jessica L. E. Wimmer,Max Brabender,Loraine Schwander,William F Martin +4 more
- 09 Oct 2023
TL;DR: The Moon-forming impact vaporized Earth's mantle, creating a magma ocean and degassing CO2 into the atmosphere. The rain dissolved CO2 and made it available to react with transition metal catalysts, generating organic compounds. Autotrophic organisms fixed CO2 and formed the backbone of all ecosystems.

Selective Disruption of Survivin's Protein‐Protein Interactions: A Supramolecular Approach Based on Guanidiniocarbonylpyrrole
Dennis Aschmann,Cecilia Vallet,Sunil Kumar Tripathi,Yasser B. Ruiz-Blanco,Max Brabender,Carsten Schmuck,Elsa Sanchez-Garcia,Shirley K. Knauer,Michael Giese +8 more
TL;DR: By rational design, two structurally related ligands (LNES and LHIS) are identified, capable of selectively inhibiting these PPIs, leading to a reduction in cancer cell proliferation.
