To optimize power electronic systems, the characterization of switching losses is very important. When using wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductors, this becomes more difficult with the standard measurement method due to high switching speeds. This paper discusses feasible measurement methods to determine switching losses of integrated power modules with fast switching semiconductors with high accuracy. The limits of the classical double pulse method are identified and where errors occur are analyzed. Furthermore, indirect switching loss measurement methods are described which have no disturbing effect on the switching cell. A circuit model is presented allowing to calculate switching losses from datasheet parameters.

Double pulse vs. indirect measurement: Characterizing switching losses of integrated power modules with wide bandgap semiconductors

The compensating choke plays an important role in many high-power industrial applications with reactive power compensation. Due to the high number of devices installed every year and the EU’s efforts to reduce the energy demands of our society, it is advisable to maximize the efficiency of these devices. Due to the non-linearity of the magnetic core, the requirement of a linear operating characteristic, and the presence of a distributed air gap, this is a difficult task, with various technical challenges. This paper presents an analytical method for the electromagnetic design of a three-phase compensating choke with an air-gapped core and a flat load characteristic. The design method considers the fringing magnetic fields and the current-density dimensioning based on an advanced analytical thermal model. The proposed method is based on the use of existing analytical procedures; however, optimization was conducted to achieve a trade-off between the core and the I2R losses to manipulate the efficiency and the weight and identify optimization possibilities. The presented method was verified by the finite element method (FEM) using the engineering-simulation software, ANSYS.

Analytical Method for Designing Three-Phase Air-Gapped Compensation Choke

This letter presents a hardware demonstrator of an all-SiC three-level T-type (3LTT) inverter with the common-mode (CM) EMI filter stages placed on the DC input instead of the AC output side, targeting, for example, high-efficiency PV applications. The extensive experimental characterization shows that state-of-the-art SiC transistors and a DC-side CM filter enable an unprecedented peak/full-load efficiency of 99.4% (calorimetric measurement) at 12.5 kW and a power density of 2.4 kW/dm3 (39 W/in3). The demonstrator fulfills CISPR 11 Class A EMI regulations as well as upcoming EMI standards for the frequency range of 9–150 kHz. Compared to other high-efficiency converters, which often employ bridge legs with more output voltage levels, the described 3LTT concept thus offers a very favorable trade-off between complexity and performance.

All‐SiC 99.4%‐efficient three‐phase T‐type inverter with DC‐side common‐mode filter

This paper proposes an improved common mode (CM) electromagnetic interference (EMI) suppression method in switching power supplies. The lossless snubber circuit can reduce du/dt and EMI in the high-frequency band. Nevertheless, it has a weak EMI suppression effect on the low-frequency band. A method combining the chaotic spread spectrum and the lossless snubber (CSS–LS) is proposed to improve the EMI suppression effect of the lossless snubber. It is an effective means to suppress CM EMI further. The paper used a Boost PFC converter as the object of analysis to study the CM EMI suppression effect of CSS–LS. Firstly, a CM EMI-equivalent model of the lossless snubber PFC converter was established. Then, the power spectral density function under chaotic spread-spectrum modulation was derived. The simulation analysis was performed. Finally, an experimental prototype was built, and relevant EMI tests were carried out. The experimental results show that CSS–LS can reduce CM EMI by 4~20 dBµV with little impact on converter stability. Fewer extra costs are needed for this optimization method, which is suitable for high-power-density power electronic devices.

A Method for CM EMI Suppression on PFC Converter Using Lossless Snubber with Chaotic Spread Spectrum

Because the factors affecting the output power of new energy distribution network are relatively low and complex, control the error of its prediction results effectively is very hard to realize. Therefore, the method of this paper is proposed. From three aspects of natural environment, equipment and power demand, this paper analyzes the composition of affecting factors and the specific impact mode, and takes them as the input. After establishing the corresponding relationship between the input layer and the hidden layer using Logistic chaotic mapping, the gradient descent method is used to adjust the connection threshold of each layer until the error function converges, it will be used as the new energy distribution network output power prediction model to achieve power prediction. In the test results, the error of the prediction method not only shows a high stability, but also remains at a low level, with the corresponding maximum error of only 1.27%.

The size of back-to-back converters with active front end is significantly determined by the size of the passive filter components. This paper presents a new complete EMC filter concept for this type of converter system that is effective on the input and the output. This involves filtering the main common mode interferences from the grid and motor sides with a single CM choke. Since only the difference of the generated common mode voltage-time areas of both converters is absorbed by this component, the size of the required filter can be greatly reduced compared to conventional filter concepts. The concept is validated on a grid feeding inverter that can be connected to the public distribution network with an output power of 63 kW. The size reduction is demonstrated by means of a design example on a system with the same power and electrical requirements. It is elaborated why, applying the new filter concept, the impedance of the DC link potentials to ground and other electrical potentials should be as high as possible and therefore associated parasitic capacitances should be minimized. From this requirement, rules for the design of the power modules of PFC and motor converters for the application of this filter concept are derived.
