Characterization of methane adsorption on overmature Lower Silurian-Upper Ordovician shales in Sichuan Basin, southwest China: Experimental results and geological implications

Computational screening methods have changed the way new materials and processes are discovered and designed. For adsorption-based gas separations and carbon capture, recent efforts have been directed toward the development of multiscale and performance-based screening workflows where we can go from the atomistic structure of an adsorbent to its equilibrium and transport properties at different scales, and eventually to its separation performance at the process level. The objective of this work is to review the current status of this new approach, discuss its potential and impact on the field of materials screening, and highlight the challenges that limit its application. We compile and introduce all the elements required for the development, implementation, and operation of multiscale workflows, hence providing a useful practical guide and a comprehensive source of reference to the scientific communities who work in this area. Our review includes information about available materials databases, state-of-the-art molecular simulation and process modeling tools, and a complete catalogue of data and parameters that are required at each stage of the multiscale screening. We thoroughly discuss the challenges associated with data availability, consistency of the models, and reproducibility of the data and, finally, propose new directions for the future of the field.

Competitive adsorption of methane and ethane in montmorillonite nanopores of shale at supercritical conditions: A grand canonical Monte Carlo simulation study

High-pressure methane sorption isotherms were collected on selected Paleozoic shales from the Sichuan Basin. Excess sorption measurements were performed on shales with varied water content (dry, moisture equilibrated at 33%, 53%, 75%, and 97% relative humidities) at 39 °C and up to 25 MPa. Water uptake isotherms were collected at 24 °C and parametrized by the Guggenheim–Anderson–de Boer (GAB) model. The effect of organic richness, mineral compositions, and pore structure characteristics on water uptake and methane sorption behavior has been investigated. The mechanism responsible for the decrease in methane sorption capacity of moisture-equilibrated shales is discussed. Water uptake of shales is primarily controlled by clay minerals, and shows a positive correlation with clay mineral content. Dredged river sediments produce a huge volume of mineral materials, which could be incorporated into building materials. Considering the raw sediment preparation, mineral processing techniques fit perfectly to this purpose. This work describes two procedures to prepare river sediments, according to the final beneficial use. The first is a dry procedure of deagglomeration to prepare river sediments with the aim of being incorporated into a concrete formulation to build a bicycle path. A large amount of deagglomerated sediment was prepared, requiring upscaling of the deagglomeration process. Successive steps of sieving and roll crushing were used to obtain deagglomerated sediments. To use it as raw material to produce pozzolanic materials and lightweight aggregates, a second procedure consisting of a wet classification at 63 µm was carried out. Steps of wet sieving, followed by hydrocycloning and screw classifying, were used to prepare several silt fractions under 63 µm.
