Abstract Biochar is a carbon-containing material prepared through thermal treatment of biomass in limited supply of oxygen, and used for an array of applications including waste management, climate change mitigation, soil fertility improvement, bio-energy production, and contaminant remediation. The data related to biochar, its production, and the wide applicability were collected using Web of Science Core Collection Database (on 25/10/2022), while bibliometric network analysis was performed using VOSviewer software to analyse year-wise, author-wise, country-wise, and journal-wise publication trends, construct keyword co-occurrence maps, and identify research areas receiving greater focus. Further, the applications of biochar were reviewed and mechanistic insights were provided. Some of the findings include: &gt; 50% of documents (&gt; 13,000) getting published in the past 3 years, &gt; 90% of documents (&gt; 21,000) being research articles, ~ 50% of publications (&gt; 10,000) being related to environmental sciences, pyrolysis being the most widely used (~ 40% articles) production technique (followed by carbonization, gasification, combustion, and torrefaction), China being the most active country in terms of publications (&gt; 11,000), and biochar being mostly used for removing contaminants (followed by soil improvement, waste management, energy production, and climate change mitigation). Various strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT analysis) of biochar production and wide-ranging applicability were identified. Lastly, gaps were identified including the need for performing elaborate life cycle assessments, exploring machine learning and artificial intelligence for upgrading conversion technology and producing application-specific biochar, and investigating mechanistic aspects of soil-biochar interactions and nano-scale transformation of biochar. The study covers a broad spectrum of biochar applicability to identify areas receiving lesser attention, which could guide the future researchers for augmenting biochar research. Graphical Abstract

Multifaceted applications of biochar in environmental management: a bibliometric profile

This review article evaluates and compares the efficiency of various sustainable adsorbents for the removal of noxious pollutants from water environments. This study discusses the various types of adsorbents concerning their performance and suitability. Adsorbent types include natural-based, carbon-based, waste-based, biomass-based, biopolymers-based, and nanocomposites-based adsorbents, as well as metallic organic frameworks, aerogels, networking crystalline solids, zeolite nanoparticles, and dendrimers were reviewed. Characterisation, modification, fabrication, adsorption capacities under different conditions, isotherm models, and kinetics of noxious pollutants were also reviewed. Adsorption capacities for different pH values, adsorbent doses, adsorbent concentrations, temperature, and the size of particles have been described. One of the basic needs in water and wastewater adsorbents is their formulation and optimisation, using columnar operations, and more importantly, they can be produced quickly and should be cost-effective. Various studies reported a broad range of values for the thermodynamic parameters for noxious pollutants, suggesting the adsorbent's nature as an essential factor affecting the thermodynamics of noxious pollutant sorption. The regeneration and reusability potential of other adsorbents have also been discussed, along with molecular modelling, simulation, knowledge gaps, and future perspectives of noxious pollutants from the water environments.

Biochar usage for removing heavy metals from aqueous environments has emerged as a promising research area with significant environmental and economic benefits. Using the PICO approach, the research question aimed to explore using biochar to remove heavy metals from aqueous media. We merged the data from Scopus and the Web of Science Core Collection databases to acquire a comprehensive perspective of the subject. The PRISMA guidelines were applied to establish the search parameters, identify the appropriate articles, and collect the bibliographic information from the publications between 2010 and 2022. The bibliometric analysis showed that biochar-based heavy metal remediation is a research field with increasing scholarly attention. The removal of Cr(VI), Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cu(II) was the most studied among the heavy metals. We identified five main clusters centered on adsorption, water treatment, adsorption models, analytical techniques, and hydrothermal carbonization by performing keyword co-occurrence analysis. Trending topics include biochar reusability, modification, acid mine drainage (AMD), wastewater treatment, and hydrochar. The reutilization of heavy metal-loaded spent biochar includes transforming it into electrodes for supercapacitors or stable catalyst materials. This study provides a comprehensive overview of biochar-based heavy metal remediation in aquatic environments and highlights knowledge gaps and future research directions. 

Utilization of biochar for remediation of heavy metals in aqueous environments: A review and bibliometric analysis

Dust pollution control is the basic guarantee of mine safety production, which has been widely concerned by scholars. Based on a total of 1786 publications collected by the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) from 2001 to 2021, this paper analyzes the spatial-temporal distribution characteristics, hot topics, and frontier trends of the international mine dust field during the past 20 years by using Citespace and VOSviewer knowledge graph technology. The research shows that the study of mine dust can be divided into three stages: initial period (2001 ~ 2008), stable transition period (2009 ~ 2016), and boom period (2017 ~ 2021). The journals and disciplines which belong to mine dust research mainly focus on environmental science and engineering technology. A stable core group of authors and institutions have been preliminarily formed in the dust research field. The main themes of the study contained the whole process of mine dust generation, transport, prevention, and control, as well as the consequences of disaster. At present, the hot research fields mainly focus on mine dust particle pollution, multi-stage dust prevention, and emission reduction technologies, and mine occupational protection, monitoring, and early warning. In the future, the research should focus on the mechanism of dust production and transportation, the theory of efficient prevention and control, the technology and equipment of precise prevention and control of dust, and the high-precision monitoring and early warning of dust concentration. Future research should be concerned with dust control in underground mines and deep concave open-pit mines with complicated and treacherous environments, and strengthen research institutions, interdisciplinary cooperation, and interaction so as to promote the integration and application of mine dust and automation, information, and intelligent technology.

Spatial and temporal evolution of mine dust research: visual knowledge mapping analysis in Web of Science from 2001 to 2021

Biochar has caught great attention over the last decade, yielding a large number of publications in a broad range of disciplines. This scientometric study produces a combined qualitative–quantitative assessment of 10,000 publications recorded in the period 2005–2019 in the Web of Science (WoS) database, based on innovative methods and indicators, and focusing in particular on biochar production and valorization pathways. The cumulated number of publications was analyzed with power and logistic models, and the economic indicator CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) for the estimation of future academic output. Mapping of the evolution of academic output revealed the worldwide diffusion of academic production toward many countries and continents. According to the analysis of collaboration networks of most productive countries, the development of academic output may be linked to high levels of international collaboration, as well as the diversity of these networks. Furthermore, the rise of academic output in the African continent may preclude an evolution toward a multipolar academic world. The average number of citations per paper at both author level (number of citations/number of papers) and journal level (total citations/total papers) was found to be a useful indicator of scientific productivity. In particular, academic journals with impact factors as low as 2.5–3 still ranked high on this criterion, revealing their high impact on academic research in the biochar sector. Finally, the analysis of targeted keywords co-occurrences emphasized the diversification of research on biochar applications, from its initial use as soil improver toward engineered biochar for versatile applications.
