Low-Noise pavement technologies and evaluation techniques: a literature review

Research studies often propose additives to improve the mechanical properties that extend pavement service life by reducing the rate of permanent deformation of conventional asphalt mixtures. However, questions remain regarding the consistency and efficacy of additives compared to the conventional mixtures, particularly under different conditions of loading and climate inherent to various countries and locations. To shed further light, this paper presents a laboratory and field evaluation of Marshall and Superpave Gyratory-compacted crumb rubber-modified and traditional asphalt concrete mixtures. A laboratory-based study was conducted to ascertain the resilient modulus, indirect tensile strength, and permanent deformation of crumb rubber-modified asphalt mixtures. The Marshall stability and resilient modulus of mixtures prepared with crumb rubber-modified mixtures were increased on average by 30 and 43%, respectively, as compared to the control mixtures, whereas the permanent deformation of the crumb rubber-modified mixtures was improved on average by 12% in contrast to the control mixtures. Field investigations on short-term effectiveness revealed crumb rubber-modified asphalt mixture treatment exhibited on average 36.16% drop in International Roughness Index. In contrast, the control mixture pavement showed 24.20% drop in International Roughness Index. The results indicate and quantify the extent to which crumb rubber improves the performance of the conventional mixtures, in terms of the performance criteria specified.

Performance Evaluation of Crumb Rubber-Modified Asphalt Mixtures Based on Laboratory and Field Investigations

The tyre/road noise depends on type and speed of vehicles and on the characteristics of road pavement. Vehicle traffic load and weather conditions lead to significant changes in the characteristics of the materials used to build the wearing course. This applies especially to road pavements with the increased void contents. Clogging of the pores, changes in the characteristics of the binder and the damage to the wearing course influence changes in the acoustic properties of the road pavement over time. The article presents the results of the studies on noise level carried out in 2011 and 2014 by the Statistical Pass-By method (SPB) on porous asphalt concrete (PAC), very thin asphalt concrete (VTAC) and stone mastic asphalt (SMA). The wearing courses with the increased void contents immediately after building constitute a very advantageous solution compared with traditional road pavements (dense asphalt concrete, stone mastic asphalt). However, the unfavourable location of the road with porous wearing course, lack of systematic cleaning of porous layers or inappropriate maintenance methods in winter lead to the loss of the acoustic durability of low-noise pavements within a few years of their exploitation.

The effect of time on acoustic durability of low noise pavements – The case studies in Poland

The road surface is one of the most important factors that have influence on the current traffic noise. Usually, for dense surfaces, impacts of the tyre on the pavement generate vibrations which are the dominant mechanisms in the tyre–road noise. In this study, the effect of muffling these vibrations, by the incorporation of crumb rubber (CR) from wasted tyres into asphalt pavements, has been evaluated acoustically. Close proximity measurements have been carried out to register the sound emission generated in the contact zone between a reference tyre and an experimental asphalt pavement with CR. The analysis of the measurements indicates that the incorporation of CR as well as the air voids content has less influence than the macrotexture of the road surface on the acoustical behaviour of this experimental asphalt pavement.

Macrotexture influence on vibrational mechanisms of the tyre–road noise of an asphalt rubber pavement

The objective of the research was the development, optimisation and evaluation of thin noise-reducing surface layers in Germany intended to be more durable than porous asphalts, thus providing better long-term acoustical properties. The basic approach was to create a smooth, open-textured surface with a stone mastic asphalt-based aggregate skeleton across the whole thickness of the layer. The test pavements in Dusseldorf were subjected to both optical 3D measurements of surface texture parameters and the continuous close-proximity method monitoring of the noise emission. The test pavements had significant noise reduction and very low changes in acoustical properties over time, and when compared to other common types of surface layers they showed the highest noise-reducing capacity.
