Phenols having an unsubstituted ortho position are transalkylated in the ortho position by mixing them with an ortho-alpha-branched alkylphenol (e.g., 2,6-di-sec-butylphenol) and an aluminum phenoxide catalyst and heating the mixture to 100°-350°C., preferably in a closed system and in the presence of olefin corresponding in structure to the ortho-alpha-branched alkyl group.This application is continuation-in-part of application Ser. No. 20,115, filed Mar. 16, 1970.

Phenol transalkylation process

A process for the continuous preparation of a ditertiary butylcresol wherein m- or p-cresol is reacted with isobutene at elevated temperature using H 2 SO 4 as catalyst wherein the process is carried out stepwise by introducing stepwise into a reaction mixture comprising substantially all of the cresol to be reacted with isobutene The total amount of isobutene introduced is introduced such that less isobutene is charged in a last stage of the process than in the first stage thereof Thereafter the catalyst is deactivated

Process for the continuous preparation of di-tertiary butylcresols

A process is disclosed for reducing the concentration of o-ethylphenol in m,p-cresol by partially t-butylating a mixture of the above and equilibrating the resultant mixture to convert o-ethylphenol and its 6-t-butyl derivative to the thermodynamically most stable 4-t-butyl-o-ethylphenol. The resultant mixture may then be separated by fractional distillation to isolate m,p-cresol low in o-ethylphenol, optionally, the mono-t-butylated derivatives of m,p-cresol and leave behind the 4-t-butyl-o-ethylphenol, along with di-t-butylated derivatives of all the phenols.

Halogenated alkyl substituted phenols may be dealkylated by treating a compound such as 5-t-butyl-2-fluorophenol with a diealkylation catalyst such as an acid acting compound at dealkylation conditions whereby the t-butyl substituent is removed and the resulting compound comprising 2-fluorophenol is recovered.
