Dynamic Impacts of Economic Growth, Renewable Energy Use, Urbanization, and Tourism on Carbon Dioxide Emissions in Argentina

• Improving environmental quality through reducing emissions is the central pillar of climate change mitigation and achieving sustainable development goals. • The empirical findings reveal that economic growth, fossil fuel energy use, urbanization, and tourism cause environmental degradation by increasing CO 2 emissions in Mexico while increased renewable energy use and agricultural productivity help to improve the environmental quality in Mexico by reducing CO 2 emissions. • This study provides recommendations for designing effective policies related to a low-carbon economy, promoting renewable energy use, sustainable urbanization, eco-friendly tourism, and climate-smart agriculture which would ensure environmental sustainability by reducing emissions in Mexico. Global climate change, aggravated by greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly emissions from carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), poses significant threats to the environment, development, and sustainability. Mexico is a prominent tourist country experiencing continuous economic growth, rapid urbanization, and agricultural productivity which is causing higher energy consumption and CO 2 emissions. The current research explores the dynamic effects of economic growth, fossil fuel energy use, renewable energy use, urbanization, tourism, and agricultural productivity on CO 2 emissions in Mexico. Time series data from 1990 to 2019 were analyzed using the Dynamic Ordinary Least Squares (DOLS) method. According to the estimations, a 1% rise in economic growth, fossil fuel energy use, urbanization, and tourism will raise CO 2 emissions by 0.45%, 1.77%, 0.10% and 0.04%. Furthermore, a 1% increase in renewable energy consumption and agricultural productivity may result in reductions in CO 2 emissions of 0.66% and 0.20%. This article put forward policy recommendations in the areas of low-carbon economy, promoting renewable energy use, sustainable urbanization, eco-friendly tourism, and climate-smart agriculture which would ensure environmental sustainability by reducing emissions in Mexico. Towards sustainability: dynamic nexus between carbon emission and its determining factors in Mexico

Purpose This study employed the stochastic implications of regression on population, affluence, and technology (STIRPAT) methodology between 1972 and 2021. The main goal of this research is to look at how FDI, population growth, industrialization, and education affect the environment in Argentina. Methodology The F-bound test and Johansen cointegration test are employed in this research to determine if there is a co-integration association among the variables. Additionally, the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) method is used to examine the short-run and long-run elasticity of the independent variable. This study also incorporated a pairwise Granger causality test to determine the direction of causation between the variables. After that, the study applied several diagnostic and stability tests. Findings The empirical evidence demonstrates the presence of a co-integration association among CO2 emissions, population, industrialization, and education. The findings indicate that population growth and industrialization harm the environment in Argentina in the long run. In addition, a significant inverse association was obtained between CO2 emissions and educational expenditures in the short run. Practical implications The existence of STIRPAT suggests that Argentina is capable of achieving sustained economic growth. To achieve the goal, countries must implement appropriate government policies and ensure their implementation. This paper argues strongly for more investment in education, renewable energy, sustainable industrialization, and research and development, all of which are essential for a green economy.

Impact of FDI, industrialization, and education on the environment in Argentina: ARDL approach

A sizeable (and growing) proportion of the public in Western democracies deny the existence of anthropogenic climate change. It is commonly assumed that convincing deniers that climate change is real is necessary for them to act pro-environmentally. However, the likelihood of ‘conversion’ using scientific evidence is limited because these attitudes increasingly reflect ideological positions. An alternative approach is to identify outcomes of mitigation efforts that deniers find important. People have strong interests in the welfare of their society, so deniers may act in ways supporting mitigation efforts where they believe these efforts will have positive societal effects. In Study 1, climate change deniers (N D 155) intended to act more pro-environmentally where they thought climate change action would create a society where people are more considerate and caring, and where there is greater economic/technological development. Study 2 (ND347) replicated this experimentally, showing that framing climate change action as increasing consideration for others, or improving economic/technological development, led to greater pro-environmental action intentions than a frame emphasizing avoiding the risks of climate change. To motivate deniers’ pro-environmental actions, communication should focus on how mitigation efforts can promote a better society, rather than focusing on the reality of climate change and averting its risks.

Promoting pro-environmental action in climate change deniers

In Latin America, there is scarce comparative research on variables associated with the perception of climate change. This hinders the ability of governments to take mitigation and adaptation measures in the face of the phenomenon, as well as the ability of the population to cope with its effects. In order to fill that void, this research studies the relationship between climate change perception, vulnerability, and readiness in 17 countries of the region. To that end, perception indicators included in the Latinobarometro 2017 survey are analyzed, contrasted with vulnerability and readiness indexes provided by the University of Notre Dame’s Global Adaptation Index. The analytical strategy includes the statistical description of the variables associated with the perception of climate change in countries of the region, clustering together those countries that display similar behavioral patterns in relation to their vulnerability and readiness indicators, as well as crosstabs with climate change indicators. The key findings indicate that it is possible to identify 3 patterns of behavior regarding the countries’ vulnerability and readiness, which account for high, intermediate, and low levels in those variables. These patterns indicate cross-cutting trends concerning variables such as the level of education and affinity for the market economy, as well as particularities differentiating each country from the rest. The main conclusion is the existence of a negative association between the affinity people express for the market economy and their acknowledgment of climate change as a relevant problem.
