This paper describes embedded rationality as a method for implicitly combining fabrication constraints into an interactive framework for conceptual design. While the concept of ‘embedded rationality’ has been previously discussed in the context of a parametric design environment, we employ this concept to present a novel framework for dynamic simulation as a method for interactive form-finding. By identifying categories of computational characteristics, we present a unified physics-solver that generalizes existing simulations through a constraint-based approach. Through several examples we explore conceptual approaches to a fixed form where the resulting effects of interacting forces are produced in real-time. Finally, we provide an example of embedded rationality by examining a constraint-based model of fabrication rationale for a Planar Offset Quad (POQ) panelization system.

Transformations: a project-based investigation into the impact of creative design computation on architectural practice

This paper presents an interactive framework for the design of truss structures with incorporation of the subjective influence of user feedback in the design process. In the devised framework, the truss chords are described using Non-Uniform Rational Basis Splines (NURBS), a representation typically used in computer aided design (CAD) for describing free-form geometry. This allows for a convenient interface between the optimization scheme, namely a particle swarm optimizer (PSO), and the user. Based on the assumption that aesthetic design goals are not straightforwardly quantifiable, key elements for an interactive optimization framework are derived, and implemented for the design of truss structures subject to an additional set of structural criteria/constraints. Setting off from an initial design the user can visually assess interesting solutions that arise during the optimization process, save them for later assessment, actively drive the optimization towards individual goals, re-initialize the process from a set of preferred solutions, or restart the design. For translating the user's perception into quantifiable terms, a criterion is introduced to measure the similarity of candidate solutions with respect to reference designs. The framework is then applied in the design of 2D and 3D truss structures. The effectiveness of the similarity criteria, as well as the ability of the user to drive the optimization towards specific design goals is demonstrated.

Generative Design Exploration : Computation and Material Practice

This paper presents research in the development of heuristic evolutionary algorithms (EAs) for generating and exploring differentiated force-based structures. The algorithm is weighted toward design exploration of topological differentiation while including specific structural and material constraints. An embryological EA model is employed to “grow” networks of mass-spring elements achieving desired mesh densities that resolve themselves in tensile force (form-active) equilibrium. The primal quadrilateral quadrisection method serves as the foundation for a range of extensible subdivision methods. Unique to this research, the quad is addressed as a “cell” rather than a topological or geometric construct, allowing for the contents of the cell to vary in number of mass-spring elements and orientation. In this research, this approach has been termed the quadrilateral quadrisection with n variable topological transformation method. This research culminates with the introduction of a method for grafting meshes where emergent features from the evolved meshes can be transposed and replicated in an explicit yet informed manner. The EA and grafting methods function within a Java-based software called springFORM, developed in previous research, which utilizes a mass-spring based library for solving force equilibrium and allows for both active (manual) and algorithmic topology manipulation. In application to a specific complex tensile mesh, the design framework, which combines the generative EA and mesh grafting method, is shown to produce emergent and highly differentiated topological arrangements that negotiate the specific relationships among a desired maximal mesh density, geometric patterning, and equalized force distribution.

Evolutionary structural and spatial adaptation of topologically differentiated tensile systems in architectural design

This research argues for novel strategies to integrate structural analysis data in architectural design. Instead of a linear procedure of analysis, synthesis, evaluation and post-rationalization a synthesis/evaluation loop is installed which embeds structural analysis data as design driver from early on. The approach regards structural performance as one design criteria within a network of different requirements. An equilibrium of multiple parameters is aspired to instead of a single-parameter-optimum.The research is conducted via a custom-made digital interface between 3d modelling software and an application for structural analysis of space frames. The information exchange provides the basis for successive strategies within a collaborative design process of spatial roof structures: negotiation of an overall form and a multi-dimensional improvement of space frame topologies by a Genetic Algorithm (GA).

This paper presents a design framework that bridges the divide between creative design-practice and real-word construction. We outline how physical form-finding becomes the core of a tight parametric setup, via digital dynamic relaxation. Even though very specific, this computational method aids creative design exploration, while simultaneously considering relevant constraints for construction and fabrication of a novel sun-sail structure.

A Parametric Framework for Solar Tensile Structures

This paper presents a strategy for implementing computational methods in education to solve specific project related research challenges. In our case, we investigate novel solutions for Organic Photovoltaic Carrier Systems. Therefore, environmental forces (especially the sun and shade) are important design drivers in all projects. Whilst the individual projects are limited to one semester, it is our aim to advance and accumulate these patches within a longer-term research strategy. Especially design-build projects that include digital fabrication often require a skillset not always available in a design studio environment. Providing simple parametric patches frees up time for creative investigations and allows tackling projects that are more complex. In the following, we will present and discuss a series of patches developed over the course of five projects that became our case studies. We conclude, by identifying relevant aspects that might be generalized and evaluate our insights for others.

Parametric Patchwork - Advancing the Development of an Organic Photovoltaic Carrier System through Various Computational Methods

The academic project presented within this paper dealt with the development and fabrication of a customized acoustic structure combining various analogue and digital design methods. The aim was to improve the acoustic situation in an office space and at the same time to represent the clients working philosophy, which is rooted in parametric design itself. The methodical framework originates from the idea of design as the resolution of “wicked” problems in the sense of Rittel and Webber (1973). It is a bottom-up approach, conceptualized to allow for a broad exploration of the design subject. Different aspects of sound have informed the process—from the conceptual stage until the detailed geometrical formulation of the structure. We used artistic experiments, designerly interpretations of sound emitting patterns, sound engineering expertise, physical sound measurement, digital simulation of sound performance properties and parametric geometry modelling. Our paper focusses on two aspects. First, the methodology developed and used to create, integrate and transform knowledge gained from different acoustic analysis and interpretation techniques into the design process. Examples will highlight benefits and difficulties encountered. Among the latter, especially aspects of acoustic simulation will be discussed. Second, we demonstrate some key aspects of the final design: the acoustic concept and the strategies used for modelling and fabrication.
