This paper empirically investigates the factors driving the adoption of energy-efficiency measures by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Our analyses are based on cross-sectional data from SMEs which participated in a German energy audit program between 2008 and 2010. In general, our findings appear robust to alternative model specifications and are consistent with the theoretical and still scarce empirical literature on barriers to energy efficiency in SMEs. More specifically, high investment costs, which are captured by subjective and objective proxies, appear to impede the adoption of energy-efficient measures, even if these measures are deemed profitable. Similarly, we find that lack of capital slows the adoption of energy-efficient measures, primarily for larger investments. Hence, investment subsidies or soft loans (for larger invest-ments) may help accelerating the diffusion of energy-efficiency measures in SMEs. Other barriers were not found to be statistically significant. Finally, our findings provide evidence that the quality of energy audits affects the adoption of energy-efficiency measures. Hence, effective regulation should involve quality standards for energy au-dits, templates for audit reports or mandatory monitoring of energy audits.

Adoption of energy-efficiency measures in SMEs - An empirical analysis based on energy audit data

Ausgehend vom Begriff der Gouvernementalitat, der die wechselseitige Konstituierung von Machtformen, Wissenspraktiken und Subjektivierungsprozessen thematisiert, setzen sich ab etwa Mitte der 1990er Jahre viele Studien mit den Merkmalen institutioneller, vor allem aber staatlicher Regierungspraxen auseinander. Standen hier zunachst die Fremdfuhrung von Individuen und die damit verbundenen (Regierungs-)Strategien im Zentrum des Forschungsinteresses, so wachst seit einiger Zeit – wohl auch ausgehend von Michel Foucaults Uberlegungen zum Thema Selbstfuhrung – das Interesse an den Praktiken bzw. „Technologien des Selbst“. Dabei wird die Arbeit der Individuen an sich selbst auch als Teil neu auftauchender Regierungsrationalitaten begriffen, bei denen vormals externe, also etwa institutionalisierte Disziplinierungspraxen, nun in die Individuen hinein verlagert worden sind oder werden. Eine daruber hinausgehende insbesondere von Theodore Schatzkis Praxisbegriff inspirierte Forschungsperspektive setzt sich derzeit noch breiter mit diesem Fragen einander. Sie weitet das Forschungsfeld in doppelter Weise aus: Erstens betrachtet sie „alle sozialen Praktiken“ im Hinblick darauf, „welche Formen des Subjekts sich in ihnen bilden“ (Reckwitz 2008: 135). Die zweite Ausweitung besteht darin, dass sich das Forschungsinteresse auch und vor allen Dingen auf den historischen Wandel von Subjektformen und -formierungen und den damit verbundenen sozialen Praktiken und Codes erstreckt.

Das unternehmerische Selbst: Subjektivierungsform oder Subjektivierungsweise ?

The increase in leisure time over the last century is well documented. We know much less, however, about the quality of the use of leisure time. Quite divergent predictions exist in this regard: Some authors have argued that the new, extensive free time will lead to new forms of time pressure and stress; others have foreseen an expansion of boredom. This is the first paper that systematically investigates the quality of leisure time in 36 countries around the world. It uses the 2007 ISSP-survey “Leisure Time and Sport”. We investigate stress and boredom during leisure time by making use of four general theories about international and intercultural differences. The theories relate to the level of socio-economic development, religious–cultural systems, types of welfare states, and to the emergence of specific “time regimes”. In addition, we control for the effect of relevant individual level variables. At the macro level, significant differences emerge concerning the level of development, the dominant religion, and the extent of welfare benefits. The most interesting finding, however, was that a typology of leisure time regimes is the most suited to explain the considerable differences between the 36 countries compared. Implications of this finding for time policy and further research are discussed in the concluding section.

Sie wenden sich nicht primar der Emotionssoziologie zu, indirekt geht es jedoch immer wieder auch um Gefuhle und insbesondere um die moderne Liebe. Beck und Beck-Gernsheim gehen dem ganz alltaglichen Chaos in Liebe und Partnerschaft auf die Spur als Konsequenz des Individualisierungsprozesses.

Der Anstos zu Crash Kurs NRW stammt aus England. Im Dezember 2008 haben zwei Mitarbeiter der nordrhein-westfalischen Polizei dort an einer „Buhnenveranstaltung“ in der Aula einer Schule der Grafschaft Staffordshire (in Mittelengland, etwa 1 Mio. Einwohner) teilnehmen konnen. Das dortige Crash Course Team, bestehend aus zwei hauptamtlichen und zwei nebenamtlichen Akteuren, prasentierte selbst erlebte Unfallsituationen aus der Sicht von Opfern, Tatern, Hinterbliebenen und Helfern auf sehr emotionale Weise vor 15- bis 16-jahrigen Schulerinnen und Schulern. Unterstutzt wurden die Vortrage durch Bildmaterial und Videospots. Die Veranstaltung dauerte etwas mehr als eine Stunde.
